New World with Four Husbands
Chapter 231: Getting the permit
CHAPTER 231: GETTING THE PERMIT
After the encounter with Drishti and Joachim in Magia Pierre, Coco proceeded to go to the village hall.
Coco walked through the bustling streets leading to the village’s hall, her steps light and her eyes taking in the various events of people around her.
The air was filled with the sounds of people going about their daily lives, the shouts of men, women, and mediators calling for someone they know, the giggles and laughter of children, and the chatter of passersby had reached her ears.
The village was alive with various activities, its streets filled with people going about their business.
However, despite the hustle and bustle of everyone, the woman’s attention was focused solely on her destination, her gaze fixed straight ahead as she made her way towards the hall.
The street was narrow, the houses that lined it tall and packed closely together, their stone walls a mixture of vibrant and dark colors.
Overhead, she could see some laundry stretched from window to window, drying sheets and clothing visible through the open windows as the people in the houses talked to others outside of their house.
The path sloped slightly and gently downward, curving around a sharp corner before ending at a large building.
Coco continued to move through the streets with fast strides, her gaze fixed ahead of her as she made her way towards the village hall.
It didn’t take long for her to arrive at her destination, her footsteps light and quick as she went up the three flights of stairs— her mind set on getting the permit done by the end of the day no matter what.
Coco pushed open the heavy oak door of the village hall and stepped into the slightly dark, spacious hallway.
Her beginner’s boots clomped softly on the wooden floor, the floorboards creaking quietly under her weight as the sound echoed faintly in the vast room.
The hallway was cool, the air temperature much lower than outside, the stone walls and lack of windows kept the interior insulated from the heat of the day— not like it was hot in the first place, but it was noticeably colder inside the village hall.
The hallway was sparsely lit, only a few lamps scattered about, the light dim and flickering.
"This place is really beautiful." Lala sighed out, a dreamy look in her eyes as she looked around the hallway, her gaze landing on the intricate handcraft on the walls.
"I agree." Coco chuckled, smiling softly at the fairy’s reaction towards the designs on the wall.
A low hum of conversation could be heard in the distance, the sound of people talking and the soft thump of footsteps on the floorboards were loud enough to catch her attention.
Coco strode forward, heading towards the source of the noise, ready to know if she could bother the village chief today.
The hallway was quiet, the only sounds were Coco’s footsteps and the soft hum of the torches.
After a moment of walking, she reached a wooden door, the grain of the wood visible through the chipped and peeling paint.
Coco paused outside the wooden door, her ears catching the low murmur of voices coming from within.
The words were unintelligible, the sounds muffled by the thick wood of the door, but it was clear that there was a conversation ongoing inside the room.
Coco tilted her head to the side, trying to catch any distinguishable words, but only managing to catch fragments of conversation, making it clear that the door itself was thick enough to not let any distinguishable words seep through.
"There’s a magic stone imbued in this door." The garden fairy commented as she pressed a hand on the door, "I could feel it."
"Guess that’s why I can’t understand a thing." Coco hummed out as she lifted her hand and knocked on the door, her knuckles rapping lightly on the wood, three sharp raps against the thick oak.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
The sound was surprisingly loud in the quiet of the hallway, the sound echoing off the stone and wooden walls, cutting through the muffled voices like a knife.
Fortunately, the voices inside went quiet for a moment, as if the occupants had been startled by the interruption.
There was a moment of silence on the other side of the door, and then a shuffle can be heard, then a footstep before the door was suddenly wrenched open, its heavy hinges creaking loudly in the sudden movement.
The village chief looked blinked, her expression shifting from confusion to pleasant surprise as she laid eyes on Coco.
"You’re just in time." Chief Salamandara said, opening the door wider to her office after seeing that it was just Coco who knocked on her door, "Come in, come in. I was about to send someone to get you."
Chief Salamandara’s expression softened, the tension in her shoulders visibly relaxing, and a small smile appeared on her lips.
"Pardon?" Coco blinked and stepped inside the office, the floorboards creaking in protest beneath her boots.
"Your permit for the main city only needs one more thing." Chief Salamandara said as she closed the door, "I only need your name and signature signed on the logbook."
"That’s all?" Coco turned to the village chief and raised an eyebrow, "I expected that you’ll ask for more things before I could leave the village. Is that not how it works— well.. You know what? I’m not even going to complain. Where’s the book I have to sign?"
Chief Salamandara chuckled at Coco’s cautiousness. "It’s true that I need to ask for more ’official’ things, but I don’t think you would cause any serious damage."
"What does that mean?! Coco can cause serious damage, you know! She’s very strong for someone with a body like hers!" Lala exclaimed, pointing an accusatory finger at the village chief.
Coco laughed nervously and nodded her head in understanding. "I’m getting my permit one way or another, right? Let me do whatever it is you want me to do."
