CHAPTER 538: LUKAS

Thunderous footsteps echoed on the ground, the sounds filtering and spreading across the night’s chilly air.

The sky was dark— a canvas of abyss with no light in sight.

There were no stars that twinkled and lit up the night sky, just like the sense of dread that settled on the mediators’ stomachs as they ran towards the hunter guild.

"Hurry!" Zaque grunted out, propelling his foot forward and pushing himself past his limit.

He was a noble, a son of a Baron who was foolish enough to rack a debt and had his title seized by Baroness Hughes— a fool who sold his own son to the Baroness’ daughter.

He was noble so he had no reason to run, except for now.

Out of the five mediators who were running through the chilling air of the night, Zaque was the only one who was struggling to keep his pace up to par with others.

He didn’t care though, all that matters was to see if Coco was safe inside the guild.

BANG!

The hunters that were loitering around the lobby of the guild jumped on their spots when the doors got slammed open.

All of them turned their heads at the direction of the doors and were shocked to see a couple of beautiful human beings looking haggard and panicked, but still, they all looked quite eye-catching.

Some onlookers started flushing with admiration, their eyes lingering on the ones they deem their type.

Some were curious, confused even, because what would ordinary looking people be doing at the hunter guild? Shouldn’t they be somewhere else instead of a ragged place like the guild?

However, they were quick to realize that they shouldn’t judge them because Coco looked harmless— like a little ball of sunshine that wouldn’t hurt a single fly, but once she was face to face with a monster..

The hunters shuddered when they recalled the look on Coco’s face when she walked inside the guild with a dead monster on her shoulder.

How could someone so small and look so harmless be that strong anyway?

No one knows, but they do know that they shouldn’t judge someone just because they looked beautiful and harmless.

Thankfully, while the mediators were panting by the entrance of the guild, Lukas saw them.

"You two.. Aren’t you two Coco’s husbands?" The tall and large man asked, his gaze landing on Heiren and Kairo.

Heiren perked up and gasped. "You!"

The sacred beast flinched and pointed at himself. "Me?! What about me?!"

"Do you know where Coco is?!" Heiren asked, grabbing Lukas’ arms and shaking him, which took the sacred beast by surprise because how could someone as small as Heiren manage to shake someone as big as him?

"No— no!" Lukas stammered out, feeling like his brain bounced around his skull. "I haven’t seen her since this morning!"

"Then where can we—" Heiren started to ask, but he was cut off when a couple of strong looking individuals rushed down the staircase, following the guildmaster himself. "Mr. Covez!"

Heiren quickly let go of Lukas and felt relieved to see the guildmaster.

"Mr. Hughes!" The guildmaster perked up and acknowledged his presence the moment his eyes landed on him. "Perfect timing! I was about to fetch you because—"

The guildmaster stopped talking when he noticed that there were five of them standing by the doors. "Goodness.. Are all of you Coco’s husbands?"

"Yes." Heiren answered on behalf of his friends. "Coco will introduce them, but for now, can you tell me where she is? She’s usually home by dinner, but she hasn’t come home!"

Almost immediately, the look on the guildmaster’s shifted. "It would be best to discuss it while we make our way to the city gates."

Lukas quickly turned to the guildmaster, a serious look on his face— the kind of sight that was rarely seen in the blonde man because he was always bouncing and smiling, never staying still.

"What happened to Coco?" The sacred beast asked, the tone of his voice making everyone inside the lobby shudder.

The atmosphere felt so heavy, a sense of dread that threatened to make them go down on their knees and lower their heads before Lukas, which left them speechless.

"There’s no time!" Mr. Covez hissed, his legs shaking under the weight of Lukas’ menacing stare. "We must urgently go to the gates!"

Lukas growled and turned in his heels, not before grabbing Alhai’s and Mr. Covez’s arms. "Coco’s husbands, hold each other and don’t let go— human hunters.. Grab onto the guildmaster tightly."

"What are you planning?" Alucard questioned, but quickly jumped on the guildmaster’s arm.

"Just listen to him!" Yuuko groaned and wrapped an arm around Alucard’s waist, her free arm grabbing hold of Akane who quickly held out her hand towards Miki.

"Shouldn’t we walk out of the guild first before we do something embarrassing?" Miki mumbled, making the sacred beast perk up.

"That human is right." Lukas grumbled and unceremoniously dragged the two groups out of the building, making each one of them let out a noise of surprise and annoyance.

The cold air of the night quickly hit everyone and made them shudder, but they didn’t have enough time to comment on it.

"Hold onto each other tightly." Lukas reminded them once more.

Alhai’s breath hitched and felt the hair on his arms raise, making him quickly hug Zaque and Zaque hugged Heiren, who immediately wrapped his arms around Kairo.

Kairo reluctantly hugged Quizen, but the blue haired mediator didn’t care before quickly hugging both Kairo and Heiren.

"Ready?" Lukas asked, shifting his hold on Mr. Covez’s and Alhai’s arms to wrap his arms around their waists. "Hold on tightly if you don’t want to be left halfway behind."

Strangely enough, they didn’t feel any doubt about Lukas’ words and felt quite comfortable trusting him.

"We’re ready—"

"We’re all good—"

Alhai and Mr. Covez simultaneously answered, but they were both cut off when everything around them became a blur.
