Night’s Nomenclature
Chapter 604: Rule-Based Killing
Forbidden Zone 10 stretches for nearly a hundred miles, starting from Yun Jin Lake in the west and ending at Pingfeng Stream in the east.
On the shores of Yun Jin Lake, three Class B Airships, stripped of their unit designations, rested quietly.
Teardrop-shaped drones flew from their nests, quickly establishing a one-kilometer security perimeter.
Nearly a hundred well-trained soldiers marched out of the Airships.
The first soldier held a riot shield.
Each soldier behind him placed their left hand on the shoulder of the comrade in front, their right hand holding a gun pointed outwards.
This was a standard special forces formation for covering advances. Everyone wore semi-enclosed, single-soldier exoskeletal armor.
This was a high-cost special forces unit, typically used for front-line infiltration, elite rescue operations, or decapitation strikes.
The cost of Gene Medicine for each soldier is 4 million, the exoskeletal armor costs 1.3 million, and their communication equipment, tactical helmets, tactical vests, weapons, and training cost approximately 700,000.
In other words, the death of each soldier would cost the combat team 6 million Federation currency, excluding funeral expenses.
Therefore, this operation, codenamed "Extreme Night," was of exceptionally high specification.
After confirming there were no ambushes, several officers emerged from the Airship's cabin. One of them held an LCD screen, reviewing data: "The unknown rules within Forbidden Zone 10 will take effect after 24 hours, so the battle must be completed within 24 hours."
The officer continued: "According to intelligence, Master of Daybreak should have already entered Forbidden Zone 10. We're advancing towards Dragon Fish's location and deploying reconnaissance spiders for a carpet search. The target is suspected to include two B-Class individuals, with Qing Zhun suspected to be an A-Class bodyguard. Initiate Plan A upon contact."
Officer: "Remember, the target is extremely dangerous. If an engagement occurs, immediately cover the War Robots' advance to within 100 meters of the target. Avoid long-range engagements."
"Understood," said a lieutenant.
The officer said: "The family will not acknowledge this operation. If any of you are apprehended, remember that this is your personal action, unrelated to the family. If you become separated from the team, you must find your own way back to base."
"Understood!" the soldiers responded loudly.
With that, 36 War Robots emerged from the Airship and, together with the soldiers, aggressively invaded Forbidden Zone 10.
The soldiers' breathing during their run, the mechanical sounds of hydraulic axles, and the metallic clang of cold weapons against exoskeletal armor intertwined.
Nearly a hundred beasts entered the battlefield, their movements aided by exoskeletal armor, each leap as if on the moon.
Waves of mechanical spiders poured out of crates, flanking them.
They had to find the object and kill it before the fourth unknown rule took effect.
They only had 24 hours.
"Remember the rules?" Qing Ye stood at the edge of Forbidden Zone 10, instructing Ma Jingjing, "Remember these three rules. If you accidentally break them, run to me immediately. Of course, I can guarantee that if there's any special danger, you won't be harmed, but if you're stupid enough to seek death, no one can help you."
Ma Jingjing quickly nodded. He had bought the second rule from the black market, and it matched the three rules Qing Ye had given them.
At least for now, the guide seemed reliable.
This expedition was partly about finding a way to make money, and partly to satisfy their thirst for adventure. These four college students were avid hikers, having even attempted to hike through Kekexili during their summer vacations before their time travel, though they didn't complete it.
Before entering Forbidden Zone 10, the four felt a mixture of fear and excitement.
This was a Forbidden Zone.
Remember, not all Time Travelers have ever been inside a Forbidden Zone.
After this return, their experience in Forbidden Zone 10 will again become rich conversation among their classmates.
All their classmates will gather around them, listening to them tell this story.
Qing Ye glanced at the four of them: "Let's go, be careful."
He was the first to enter the dense forest. The moment he stepped inside, the air temperature plummeted; everyone felt as if swept by a cold wind.
This was the sign of entering the Forbidden Zone.
Qing Chen hung his backpack on Zhang Mengqian: "I gave you a path, you didn't want it. If you want to take another path, you have to pay more. To be honest, I don't recommend you try, but life is your own, you choose."
"Yeah, I know," Zhang Mengqian nodded.
The little boy followed Qing Chen with difficulty; due to the heavy backpack, the slightest imbalance would cause him to fall.
But after falling, he didn't say anything; he just struggled to get up again.
Xiao Yu and Li Mengyun, seeing this, watched Zhang Mengqian carrying a backpack almost taller than himself, couldn't help but say to Qing Chen: "He's so small, why do you make him carry such a heavy thing, can't you carry it yourself?"
Qing Chen was silent for a moment: "Yes, yes, yes."
Shadow chuckled; he particularly liked seeing others confront Qing Chen, and Qing Chen couldn't retort.
Rule one: Don't argue.
At this time, Zhang Mengqian picked up a human femur from the bushes: "Boss, human femur, there's a pile on the ground."
Then, he calmly picked up a skull.
Xiao Yu and the others almost fainted at this sight, screaming.
They couldn't understand how a seemingly harmless little boy could so casually handle human bones.
This little boy was not as fragile as they imagined!
To be honest, sometimes even Qing Chen would overlook the fact that Zhang Mengqian was a child who could survive alone in the slums; the darkness he had seen might be even more than Qing Chen's.
"Yes, they're all human remains," Qing Chen said, glancing into the distance; he could easily see several human skeletons.
There were also bloodstains scratched by humans on the tree trunks.
Forbidden Zone 10's greatest characteristic was that it never lacked ambitious people and treasure seekers, nor did it ever lack wronged ghosts and souls.
Forbidden Zone 001 was more dangerous, but relatively fewer people went there. If there were 50,000 people coming to Zone 10 every day, then the number of people going to Zone 001 every year would be at most one or two thousand.
Therefore, although 001 was the most dangerous, it wasn't the one with the most killings.
Based on the type of people, those who died in Forbidden Zone 001 were mostly skilled and daring experts.
Those who died in Forbidden Zone 010, however, were mostly ordinary treasure seekers and low-level Metahumans.
Qing Chen looked at Ma Jingjing: "You four just mind your own business, understand?"
Ma Jingjing was stunned, but quickly reacted: "Okay, okay, okay."
Shadow laughed even harder.
Qing Chen suddenly turned to him: "Are you stupid?"
Shadow raised his eyebrows: "Yes, yes, yes."
Although Shadow was not afraid of the Forbidden Zone, if a rule was triggered, he could simply open the Shadow Gate and leave.
But the problem was that once a rule was triggered, to get rid of the negative impact and return here without being attacked, he would have to wait 24 hours.
This would cause him to miss many interesting things.
Shadow looked at Qing Chen: "Do you admire me very much?"
Qing Chen raised his eyebrows: "Yes, yes, yes."
Shadow: "Do you admire this brother of yours very much?"
Qing Chen: "Yes, yes, yes."
Shadow beamed: "Am I the best brother in the world?"
Qing Chen: "Yes, yes, yes. Are you sick?"
Shadow: "Yes, yes, yes."
Qing Ye and Qing Qu were almost laughing themselves to death; it was also the first time they had seen their boss, Shadow, being made fun of like this.
Before they could laugh too long, Zard put his arm around their shoulders: "Did you two eat shit? Laughing so happily."
Qing Ye, Qing Qu looked like they'd eaten flies: "Yes, yes, yes."
The cycle of revenge never ends; once this rule is played, everyone can't stop!
They went on like this, talking back and forth, directly reaching 11 PM.
They entered Forbidden Zone 10 at 6 PM, and at 11 PM they were still standing at the edge, not having moved much at all.
In the end, everyone sat on the ground, unwilling to lose, and began racking their brains for bad ideas.
They almost forgot why they had come here.
Ma Jingjing and the others looked at each other; in such a serious place as the Forbidden Zone, how could they still be playing around?!
Can't everyone be serious? This is Forbidden Zone 10, where countless people have been killed!
Can't you be more serious?
In this team, apart from the four of them, there wasn't a single serious person!
On the other hand, the mysterious combat team had quickly advanced to the lake where Dragon Fish was located.
They gradually slowed down, approaching silently.
Everyone held their breath and remained radio silent.
According to intelligence, Master of Daybreak's purpose was Dragon Fish and should come here directly.
At this time, the captain at the front of the team raised his arm, and in an instant, all the soldiers knelt on one knee, raising their weapons into a state of alert.
Around them, countless mechanical spiders crawled past, making a rustling sound on the ground.
After a while, when the mechanical spiders reached the lakeside, the soldier controlling them suddenly froze.
There was nothing by the lake; there wasn't even any trace of recent human habitation, nothing at all!
The soldier made a tactical gesture indicating no target found.
The captain froze. How could there be no one? Shouldn't they be here?
Did they encounter some danger, delaying their journey?
Or did they detect their decapitation operation in advance?
Impossible.
The captain made a tactical gesture, extending two fingers: Plan B. If the target is not found near Dragon Fish, they are likely to have gone to Jingshan Tea first.
But their time was running out; in a few hours, the fourth unknown rule would take effect, and everyone might die here.
Dragon Fish is located outside the Forbidden Zone's inner area, while Jingshan Tea is inside; instead of going inside to search, it's better to wait outside.
So, the captain's plan was to retreat and then infiltrate again tomorrow.
The target will definitely come to get Dragon Fish; they just need to check every day.
At this time, the deputy officer showed his watch, pointing to the time, meaning: it is about to reach midnight; they must complete the second rule.
Rule two: Before the first midnight in the Forbidden Zone, you must tell the Forbidden Zone a secret that only you know.
In fact, reaching the Dragon Fish production area wasn't very dangerous.
The captain nodded, he made a tactical gesture, and everyone immediately dispersed, whispering to the air.
Another soldier whispered: "I stole my neighbor's underwear."
He suddenly felt a piercing pain in his ankle, as if bitten by a poisonous insect.
Soldier: "???"
He thought this was a secret that no one else knew!
Soldier died.
A soldier quietly said: "I cheated."
Soldier died.
Another soldier whispered: "I like men."
Soldier died.
The captain was stunned for a long time. Before this mission, he had confirmed with the soldiers several times if they had any secrets that no one else knew.
Only those who confirmed they had secrets were allowed to enter the Forbidden Zone; a few without secrets remained on the Airship.
As a result, before they even saw the target, seven people died on the retreat?!
A 10% casualty rate!
