CHAPTER 433: GOING HOME

After Boss Lin left, Fatty sat on the couch and spaced out. Boss Lin’s words confused him, as if she were trying to remind him. Before she left, she told him that she would be around the office because she would be free. If he needed anything, he could find her anytime. Fatty scratched his head. Why would he seek out Boss Lin?

Could it be… Fatty’s eyes glowed. That he did such a good job that she planned to make him official and offer him a salary? Since they were talking about the Doctor, Fatty realised it was more and more possible. If she didn’t trust him, why would she tell him so many things about the Doctor’s past?

Fatty felt inspired. He sat up on the couch and was determined that he couldn’t disappoint Boss Lin. He had to work harder, transform himself and help society. The light of life appeared in his eyes. He felt like things were going to be better. The Doctor and Boss Lin… were good people!

Time passed quickly. The sky turned dark in the blink of an eye. The city became noisy. The Doctor didn’t come down the whole day, so Fatty went up to check on him. He noticed the bedroom door was closed. Fatty was worried about the Doctor, so he asked him at the door. The Doctor sounded congested. He claimed that he was tired and would skip lunch.

Fatty wanted to say something else, but hearing the determination in the Doctor’s voice, he guessed the mission really touched the Doctor. He left alone and thought about making a nutritious meal for the Doctor that night.

When the sky darkened, Fatty notified the Doctor and left the office with a canvas bag. Xia Meng’s people ruined the basket he had.

He didn’t realise that as he left the door, a person walked down the stairs. He didn’t turn on the light. The setting sun shone into the room. The horizon was as red as blood. The room was dyed orange. The figure walked to the couch and sat down.

The rays that came in through the window soon disappeared. Jiang Cheng sat in the dim room alone. Soon, the shrill phone ringtone came. The phone was placed behind him. It vibrated annoyingly. He reached out to grab the phone. After a few seconds, he chose to answer it.

A familiar voice came through. “Doctor JIang!” Pi Wan’s cheerful voice was recognisable, but it didn’t match the mood in the office.

Since Jiang Cheng didn’t reply, Pi Wan continued on his own. “I’m so tired. I instantly rushed here when I got your news. I finally reached the place. Doctor Jiang, you don’t know this, but E City is so much more backwards than our Rong City. It’s not easy to search for information. The address you gave was very deserted. Thankfully, I know some friends here.” Pi Wan said proudly, “I found the neighbourhood you mentioned. The building number matches. However, this place has been abandoned. I checked the room number you gave. The family moved many years ago.

“By the way, Doctor Jiang, the previous family’s surname is Zhao and not Wang. The tenant was a single man.” Pi Wan licked his lips and chuckled. “Doctor Jiang, has your memory failed you?”

Without saying anything else, Jiang Cheng hung up. It was… true.

He felt there was a pair of eyes watching him. It was getting closer and closer. The person could reach out and grab him. Everything was exposed under this pair of eyes’ scrutiny.

Xia Meng’s group was not the only one being targeted. He was, too.

Night fell. The neon lights on the street lit up. The chaos outside the window floated into the room. Footsteps echoed outside the door. After the door opened, a massive shadow floated in. Fatty hummed an unknown song, carrying a bag in each hand.

Because they had no knife, he bought some cooked food that had been cut and some appetisers. They could be eaten directly. The main dish was chilled sorghum rice. He believed the Doctor had too much fire in him, so he chose some lighter food. He got the money from the Doctor. Jiang Cheng came back from the bar late one night with a lot of money. In his good bonus, he generously gave Fatty a bonus. He told him to spend it happily.

When Fatty switched on the lights, he shivered. “Doctor.” Fatty patted his chest. “Why didn’t you turn on the lights? You scared me!”

When Jiang Cheng looked up and gazed at Fatty, the latter’s face paled. The Doctor’s eyes were filled with complications that Fatty couldn’t understand. “Put the things down. Sit.”

Fatty instantly put down the world and waddled over to sit down. He could sense that the Doctor was not joking. The Doctor looked at him calmly. He didn’t say anything. Fatty felt suffocated. He wanted to say something, but his mind told him to be quiet. Just as Fatty was about to unravel, Jiang Cheng leaned back. “You haven’t been home for a while, right? Are you homesick?”

“A bit,” Fatty answered honestly.

Jiang Cheng reached out to pour Fatty a glass of water. It was then that Fatty realised a glass was placed before him. It looked like the Doctor had prepared everything before he returned.

Jiang Cheng picked up his glass and took a sip. Without putting the glass down, he asked, “Who else is in your family?”

“My grandmother.” Fatty scratched his head. He felt lonely. “My siblings would have left. I wonder who is accompanying Grandma.”

“I’ll go back with you to E City to visit your grandmother.” Jiang Cheng said softly, “Consider it my appreciation.”

“Doctor, you don’t have to do that. You’re so busy.” Fatty rejected it symbolically, but his joy was evident.

However, when Jiang Cheng saw Fatty’s reaction, his eyes dimmed. Fatty could sense the light in Jiang Cheng’s eyes fading. A mad presence churned within them. The Doctor was suppressing something.

“Fatty.” Jiang Cheng looked up at the chubby figure across from him. “Do you have anything you need to tell me? It’s not too late.” Jiang Cheng added, “You still have time.”

Fatty looked confused. He heard a trace of pleading in the Doctor’s tone.

The Doctor… was begging.
