CHAPTER 318: CHAPTER 314: I WANT A CHILD (PART 2)

"Good girl,..." he soothed her in a low voice.

"Asher Land, can I talk to you about something?" She looked at him seriously.

"Is it something that has to be said now? Can’t it wait until later?"

She shook her head.

The last thing a man wants is for a woman to get hesitant at a moment like this, but there was nothing he could do, especially when that woman was Sophie Smith, whom he couldn’t help but be helpless around.

"I... I want a child..." She tentatively said, raising her eyes just in time to see the undeniable shock in his eyes.

His body stiffened a bit; he never thought she would bring something like this up. He assumed her feelings for him weren’t strong enough for her to want to have his child. Besides, with the European Headquarters pressing so hard, it wasn’t the right time for them to have a child.

Sophie just stared at him dumbly, hoping he’d give her a reaction, but in the end, the result left her disappointed.

"Can we wait a little longer about the child?" he said, feeling uncertain even as he voiced it.

Disappointed, she turned her head away. After a long while, she pushed him away and got dressed.

"Nanny Garcia has prepared the meal with care; letting it go cold isn’t a good idea. I’ll wait for you downstairs." Without waiting for him to speak, she walked out directly.

Asher Land felt a bit frustrated but had no choice but to get dressed and follow her downstairs.

The dining table was indeed loaded with a sumptuous spread, and there were maids serving them. Yet the maids all felt that the atmosphere at the dining table was a bit strange. Clearly, before the young master returned, Miss Smith was so expectant, but once he was back, she didn’t even speak a word to him.

Asher Land personally served a bowl of soup and placed it in front of her, but Sophie’s thoughts were still on the matter from upstairs, so she didn’t notice his gesture.

The atmosphere fell into another bout of awkwardness, and Nanny Garcia feigned a few coughs.

"Miss Smith, the soup is good. The new chef made it. Why don’t you give it a try?"

"Oh." Sophie finally realized there was a bowl of soup in front of her. She obediently picked up the bowl and drank it clean.

"I’m full. I’ll go upstairs first, take your time eating."

Sophie put down her bowl and chopsticks, didn’t look at Asher Land, and went straight upstairs.

"Young master, Miss Smith..."

"It’s alright. She might be tired."

He also lost his appetite and followed her upstairs.

Sophie lay on her side on the bed. The whole night, not a word was exchanged between the two of them.

...

Sophie got up especially early the next day, busy heading to the hospital to care for Christopher Smith. Asher Land knew of her departure but didn’t ask her to stay.

Perhaps they both needed to calm down and think things over.

Sophie arrived at the hospital, and Eva Miller was there. When she saw Sophie coming, she pushed her out the door.

"So, how was it? What did President Land say?" Eva Miller seemed more anxious than she was.

She just shook her head indifferently.

"What does shaking your head mean? Does he want the child or not?"

"No." Though he hadn’t admitted it verbally, his attitude said it all.

"How could that be?" Eva Miller didn’t think Asher Land was like that. After all, he was the one who got Sophie pregnant, so he should at least take some responsibility.

"Sophie, you won’t abort the child, will you?" Eva Miller asked with some concern.

"No." This time, she spoke resolutely. The child was hers, and even if she had to leave him, she’d keep the child.
