North America Gunman Detective
Chapter 1224 - 673: Good Things Come in Pairs
Jimmy returned to his office, placing the Medal of Distinguished Service on the desk. This was unexpected, as he hadn't prepared a display case for it. The key issue was that he had never seen this medal before, and had no idea what kind of case to choose.
Now Jimmy's desk was already lined with a row of medals and awards, proof of his hard work over the past few years, hard-earned achievements.
Mark and Julia were not in the office, probably out investigating a case. Due to Jimmy's previous training and this extended vacation, they had become accustomed to handling cases independently. This wasn't bad, at least Jimmy could take it easy for a while.
After placing the certificate and medal back in the drawer, Jimmy left the office again. The administrative leave that Ruiz granted him hadn't expired yet, so there was no need to rush back to work.
In fact, while Jimmy was on vacation, things were quite lively in Washington, D.C., but the commotion was mainly at the upper levels and hadn't spread widely, so only a few people were aware of it.
The DHS was very passive at the moment. After Raymond Agent returned to D.C., he reported everything about this operation to higher-ups. The unexpected casualties among so many agents caught everyone off guard. The FBI headquarters also learned that supporting the DHS resulted in the SRT team suffering one death and two injuries. After confirming the situation with Ruiz and others, they received accurate information, and this incident was a significant embarrassment for the DHS.
For the FBI higher-ups, having another department being too powerful was naturally not favorable. The DHS, created after the 9/11 incident, was already a dominant institution. Having merged and reorganized from various agencies with a focus on domestic counter-terrorism, it had essentially taken a substantial chunk out of the FBI's jurisdiction. Anyone would be uneasy about it. A few leadership changes might have eased the tensions, but it had only been a few years.
Now that there was an incident that publicly called for action, the response was inevitable. Just like previous government department reorganizations, the FBI started collaborating with some people in their upper Judicial Department to put constraints on the DHS.
However, the DHS isn't just sitting idly. This time, they didn't mobilize the National Guard or arrange immediate special team support, resulting in significant losses. That was their responsibility, and there was no denying it. So, they had to find a way to compensate and earn some goodwill.
After returning to Washington, D.C., Raymond Agent and his superior rushed to the SRT training base in Buffalo to visit the two injured SRT team members and present them with gifts. Accompanied by SRT Captain Roy, they visited the family of the deceased member to offer condolences. The DHS also provided a special allowance, in addition to the FBI's pension, and Raymond Agent represented the DHS at the funeral. Everything was handled quickly, solving the SRT issues before anyone else could react.
For the DHS's injured and deceased agents, they still compensated them with the highest standards they could reach before, ensuring that neither the individuals nor their families would cause a major stir over the issue, while also displaying their sincerity. To some, this was seen as an effort to placate the integrated departments and maintain internal stability.
As for the attempts by certain FBI headquarters people to collaborate with the Judicial Department and other departments to apply pressure, these are not matters that can be resolved in a day or two. They can take their time; major department decisions are never made by one person alone. The DHS also has its political allies. They've been through enough over the years and wouldn't completely stumble over this issue.
While dealing with these matters, they didn't forget to throw obstacles at the FBI, and trying to transfer Jimmy to the DHS was one of their blundering moves.
Jimmy's records are no secret. There are people in the DHS who have worked with Jimmy before, making it easy to check his records. However, they can no longer find CIA records, so all the information they found was open FBI records and his previous police records.
Jimmy's records are quite eye-catching. Not to mention an 80-90% clearance rate, just seeing the number of people who died by his hand and those kill records is enough to make anyone reading them tremble. Their department never had such a god of death. The key is that Jimmy's kills were justified. The OPR department within the FBI has investigated Jimmy time and again, and not once did they find substantial evidence to suppress him.
Now, they truly want to bring Jimmy over, but since everyone is a Federal Agent, just with different departmental affiliations, they can't forcibly transfer Jimmy. Naturally, they can only communicate first, which led to Ruiz reminding Jimmy to stay at home.
Of course, the FBI headquarters people know Jimmy. Say no more about him handling a hijacking case solo after 9/11 and becoming a designated study case in the Quantico Academy curriculum. That alone is enough to overshadow many senior agents. Additionally, Jimmy has resolved several terror-level cases, making his name quite prominent at headquarters. But due to ethnic issues and departmental interests, no one in management would actively transfer him to headquarters or grant him high-ranking positions.
To reiterate, the FBI is highly conservative. They may actively increase the number of minority members for the sake of appearances, but the upper echelons remain predominantly white.
