North America Gunman Detective
Chapter 55: 054 Gunfight
"Sergeant, while scouting from the backyard, we've found two doors, the one on the left leads to the kitchen, there's no one there right now, we could sneak in."
"No, do not act. Wait for backup to arrive, then we'll coordinate."
"Sergeant, this is a great opportunity, if there's only one suspect, the two of us could enter through the kitchen and surely subdue him."
"Denied, do not act, that's an order. If you don't follow commands, leave this place immediately."
"OKOK, as you say."
Jimmy returned the walkie-talkie to LRPD and found an open area to sit down and rest.
It wasn't long before SWAT had taken positions, and the sergeant briefed them on the current situation, including the kitchen vulnerability Jimmy had discovered from the back door.
A SWAT captain came alone to the back to find Jimmy, asking him to repeat his observations.
"Captain, stand here and look, the kitchen window over there, from the inside looking out to the backyard, at most covers two-thirds of the yard. So if we enter from the right side here, keeping close to the house and moving left, even if he is in the kitchen, he won't see us. As long as we're quiet, not drawing his attention, we have a chance to enter through the kitchen door on the left."
"With only one suspect, having more than two of us enter won't be a problem to arrest him. The only issue is the gun; he used a pistol when he shot at the police earlier, but we can't rule out the possibility of there being a rifle in my friend's house. So, we need to spot the suspect upon entering the kitchen and shoot him down immediately."
Jimmy drew a rough diagram on the ground for the SWAT captain, principally the layout of the kitchen; he was clear about the route from the kitchen to the living room but couldn't sketch it at the moment since it was impossible to see further in from the window.
As he had seen with Heart Eye, the location of the kitchen was very accurate. Jimmy roughly outlined the route from the backdoor to the kitchen to the living room and introduced his assault plan to the captain, then was left there as the captain returned to the front door, waiting to coordinate with the police and see the results of the negotiator before deciding whether to launch a forced entry.
Jimmy didn't know what the negotiation expert had said; their conversation wasn't broadcasted through a loudspeaker, so the few people behind the house could only continue to wait for orders to be relayed by walkie-talkie.
"Bang" "Bang," two gunshots rang out from the front, followed by a volley of gunfire. The suspect at the front door must have fired first, then the surrounding police responded with gunfire.
The two LRPD officers at the back door ducked to the side, while Jimmy ran straight into the backyard and stood by the door, activating Heart Eye to pinpoint the suspect's location. Strangely, both people in the house lay on the floor; the one by the window was motionless, while the bulkier shadow was Jon; he was crawling, heading, apparently, toward the door.
Jimmy tried the back door; it wouldn't open but could be cracked slightly. He peeked through the gap and saw the suspect already on the ground, a significant amount of blood spilled; from this angle, it was unclear where he'd been shot, but with that much bleeding, an artery must have been severed.
Jimmy didn't enter; instead, he turned and gestured for the two policemen to come over.
When the LRPD officers reached Jimmy, he reported, "The suspect has fallen, there's a pool of blood; inform them to enter through the front door for a check."
Jimmy stepped aside from the back door, allowing an officer to verify the scene through the gap, then left for the front door.
The crisis was over, and Jimmy hadn't had to do much except witness events. Of course, he'd been startled by the gunfire at the front door; he conservatively estimated at least 100 shots had been fired, echoing like firecrackers during New Year's celebrations.
When Jimmy arrived at the front of the house, Jon had been freed and was being examined to ensure he hadn't been hit by any stray bullets amid the chaos. The firefight would have sent adrenaline soaring, possibly disguising the sensation of being shot.
After Jon had been thoroughly checked, Jimmy gave him a hug.
The two said little; once Jimmy was sure he was safe, he returned to his patrol car and headed back to the outskirts for his usual rounds, not forgetting to call Cage to let him know he was done with the emergency.
About half an hour later, Jimmy received a call from Jon.
"Jimmy, thanks."
"I did nothing, LRPD handled it. By the way, Jon, what exactly happened?"
"Bad luck. This afternoon I heard noise downstairs and found him trying to steal something. He took me hostage once I found him. Thank God, my family is safe."
"Your neighbor said they heard gunshots before calling the police; did you fire any shots?"
"Yeah, two shots, but I hadn't practiced, I missed, and he caught me."
"Maybe get some practice at the range next time, today was too dangerous."
"Yeah, I'm fine, just wanted to tell you. I have to go now. Bye."
"Goodbye."
With Jon safe, Jimmy felt relieved. In the several months since his rebirth, he'd met many people, yet few had become friends. The group from the restaurant were amongst the ones he knew the best. Had the suspect not already been shot, Jimmy would have definitely tried to rescue them from the kitchen.
For him, using X-ray vision to shoot someone from behind was easy, but if he had acted, he'd have faced big problems, as he lacked law enforcement authority, and using a gun would have led to a complicated investigation.
Jimmy fished until the end of his shift, then returned to the station for the handover with the night shift. After tidying up, he went home, exhausted from two days of work, especially after using Heart Eye several times today, leaving him feeling somewhat sluggish.
After a night's rest, Jimmy returned to the station the next day. Before heading out on patrol, FBI agents visited again. It had been two days without any sign of Johnny. While patrolling, Jimmy and his colleagues were to stay alert since they'd found the white pickup; now Johnny might be hiding in the city or possibly attempting to leave Little Rock using other means of transport. Fortunately, all train stations, airports, and Greyhound bus stops had received wanted posters, so Johnny was unlikely to escape that way.
Jimmy still carried his M16, having returned the shotgun to the equipment room. Though he might not need it, having it handy took up no extra space, and he wasn't meant to carry it all day.
His patrol area remained the same, the West Suburb, which lately had been eventful. With his attention fixed on Johnny, a suspected killer, he parked roadside, eyeing the vehicles heading out of town, ready to honk and signal any anomaly. Nowadays, even minor issues he'd usually ignore became significant.
