North America Gunman Detective
Chapter 56: 055 Discovery
Jimmy pulled over several cars to make sure that Johnny was not inside. He mainly just checked identities and gave warnings, not really in the mood to write any tickets.
Suddenly, he spotted a black sedan speeding past his police car. He turned on the sirens and chased after it. Jimmy reported the license plate number of the sedan, and the dispatch center informed him that it was a stolen vehicle.
Jimmy called Cage for backup and then raced forward along with the black sedan.
There were more vehicles on the highway during the day, and Jimmy never had the chance to perform a PIT maneuver; he could only follow as the current speed had already surpassed 110 mph, 180 kilometers per hour.
After chasing for nearly half an hour, Cage's police car caught up from behind. It slowed down to follow behind Jimmy's car, not overtaking him to take the PIT position, as Cage's higher rank did not mean he had to outpace Jimmy and add unnecessary risk when Jimmy was handling the pursuit well.
Jimmy surveyed the road ahead and saw a stretch a few dozen meters long with only two cars, spaced far apart—a good opportunity. He accelerated, almost sticking to the rear of the sedan ahead.
When he reached the open space, Jimmy slightly veered right, hugging the lane's white line to position himself behind the right rear of the sedan. Continuing to accelerate, he exceeded 130 mph. When the police car surpassed the rear of the sedan Jimmy abruptly steered left, then straightened the wheel, struggling to control the police car. It surged left and directly collided with the back right side of the front car, which then spun towards the right and flipped over, dragging out a black trail on the ground.
Jimmy's police car also continued forwards, skewed, and when he finally managed to control it and turned around, Cage had already stopped and was pointing his gun at the driver.
The capsized sedan and Jimmy's police car occupied most of the road, forcing all the cars behind to stop and wait for the police to apprehend the suspect and clear the route. The driver of the sedan did not make a move.
Jimmy immediately took an M16 from the trunk, aiming at the driver's position, while signaling with his left hand for Cage to move closer and inspect.
Cage moved around from the back of his vehicle, gun still drawn and aimed at the driver's location.
When he approached and bent down to inspect, he then holstered his weapon. The driver appeared to be unconscious with his body secured by the seatbelt, but his head had hit the roof.
"Jimmy, drive up and lift this car," Cage shouted as he returned to his patrol car to report the situation and arrange for a tow truck, a fire engine, and an ambulance. They were already nearing the edge of Plaskey County. If Jimmy had not managed the PIT maneuver just in time, they would have had to notify the Salin County police to handle it.
Jimmy drove his police cruiser beside the suspect's sedan, using a push bumper to support the sedan. Cage positioned his police car on the other side to prevent any further movement that could cause second injuries to the driver. As for extracting the driver, they preferred to leave it to the professionals.
After dealing with the situation, Jimmy and Cage began directing traffic to pass one lane at a time on the left. Although the drivers were quite annoyed, none of them dared to complain directly to the two county police officers. Traffic slowly resumed its flow.
When the ambulance arrived, they extracted the driver, albeit causing some additional physical harm as firefighters had to cut away parts of the door and the roof. Jimmy searched the driver, finding no ID or weapons on him, and blood covered his features, making him unrecognizable.
Once it was safe, the ambulance took the suspect to the hospital, and Jimmy drove there as well.
Cage stayed at the scene, waiting for the tow truck and to search the car for contraband. He discovered two handguns in the glove compartment and an M14 rifle under the back seat.
Cage pondered for a moment, then secured the guns, and called Jimmy.
"Jimmy, have you arrived at the hospital yet? After they clean up the blood, verify the suspect's identity to see if it's Johnny. I found two handguns and an M14 in the car, which are similar to the murderer Johnny's weapons. I'm taking the guns back to the station first, and then I'll come find you."
"Okay," Jimmy said.
Jimm arrived at the hospital, and the driver had already been taken to emergency care. He had no choice but to sit and rest at the nurse's station while waiting.
Before the driver came out of emergency care, the FBI had already arrived. They were eager to catch this murderer and had come immediately upon receiving the clues.
"Officer Yang, where's the suspect?"
"He's still in emergency care. I'm waiting here," replied Jimmy.
"Tell me about the situation then."
"Okay, my patrol area is in the west. Today, while patrolling, I spotted a black Toyota sedan speeding. I activated my lights to pull over, but the car sped up and fled instead.
I called for backup, and Sergeant Cage joined me in pursuit. We chased him for over 40 minutes.
At an opportunity on the highway, I performed a PIT maneuver on the suspect's car, causing it to flip. The suspect was injured and brought here for emergency care. The search of the sedan was handed over to Sergeant Cage. I'm not sure what he found."
"Okay, we'll take over from here. You can go back now. If it's not Johnny, I'll notify you guys to take him away."
It was a relief for Jimmy to have someone else take over, especially as waiting in the hospital always felt terrible to him. Although it seemed superstititious, hospitals, being borderlands between life and death, always made him uncomfortable.
Jimmy went back out, continuing his highway patrol in his police car, but he wasn't feeling very alert due to the recent chase. After patrolling for a while, he decided to take a break on a side road.
As he was dozing off, Jimmy's cell phone rang. He answered it, and Cage's voice was already roaring through the phone.
"Congratulations, Jimmy, good news! It's confirmed that the suspect is Johnny Santiago. Once his condition stabilizes, the FBI will take him to their Tennessee division. Our job is done. Congratulations again, the department will definitely award you a bonus."
"That is good news. How is Johnny's condition?"
"Concussion, fractured left arm, experienced brief cardiac arrest during resuscitation but is stable now. The doctors will observe him for another day or two before handing him over to the FBI. Anything else is not our concern now."
"OK."
Woken by the call, Jimmy was too restless to go back to sleep. He got out of the car, dealt with some personal matters in a secluded spot, then started hunting for a food truck. For police officers, lunch was typically fast food like burgers and pizza, often eaten in their patrol cars; sitting down for a meal was a luxury.
