"Sound is a motion or disturbance in the air." Professor Sageira answered.
I nodded, "In the simplest sense, yes. To be more specific, sound is a mechanical wave, a vibration that propagates through a medium like air, water, and even the solid ground... So, my question is, if I can use air magic to emulate Dragon Tongue, will it cast even if it’s a roundabout method?"
She pondered my question for a few seconds before saying, "I don’t know if it would work. There have been similar tests like this in the past. Some ambitious mage managed to record two lesser wyrms fighting with Dragon Tounge magic and brought the recording back to the Academy to try and replicate the magic. Needless to say, it did not work. But if you are the one casting the spell to imitate Dragon Tongue, I can see how it may work. Unlike a soulless magic recording device, your will would be imbued into the air magic, and hopefully, it will carry over to what you say in Dragon Tongue. But there is only one way to find out."
With a simple flick of her wrist, Professor Sageira cast a spell I had seen her use only once before, Sealed Space. This was when she mistook me for an undead and almost took my skull off to poke around my brain.
Once Sealed Space
was in place, she said, "Go on and try it out, no need to worry about anything in the room, they are protected."
I began with casting a healing spell to soothe my itchy throat, and drinking some water, then proceeded with a voice warmup. After that, I gathered mana in my throat and mouth, and modulated the air vibrations coming out of it.
I first started not by trying to say any words, but by singing a constant low note, as low as I could naturally go, then using instinctive air magic, I willed the air in my throat and mouth to resonate at a lower frequency, which made my voice deeper.
Hearing the encouraging results, I willed my voice deeper and deeper, eventually making myself sound like a subwoofer. But with the Sealed Space spell covering and protecting everything, I did not feel the vibration I felt when my neighbors in my previous life blasted their tower speakers.
This gave me an idea that I might as well try out while we are seeing if I could replicate Dragon Tongue. "Professor, do you have an extra table and some beakers you don’t want anymore?" I asked.
She nodded, waved her hand, and from the corner of the room, a small folding table and a box labeled recycled glass floated over to me. I set up the table and put a few stained beakers on it. I then unleashed my low-frequency droning at the folding table.
At first, there was no reaction, but as my frequency gradually decreased, the table and beakers that weren’t protected by Sealed Space began to vibrate from my bass, which agitated the air, hitting the unprotected objects.
Eventually, the frequency dropped so low that I couldn’t hear it anymore, and shortly after, Professor Sageira also lost hearing it. The only signs that something was happening were that my mouth was open, the folding table and beakers rattled, and we both felt the bass vibrating through our bodies. The only reason the beakers remained on the folding table was that the table had a lip to keep things from falling off.
After I stopped, Professor Sageira dug her ear with her pinky while asking, "What was that?"
"That was the low frequency range of sound, it just went so low that it went out of our hearing range, but that does not mean that it was not there. And that gives me an idea for a sort of sonic attack. You might want to stand beside me for this."
After she got behind me, I manipulated the air in my throat and mouth to be low but still in the audible range, and amplified my output to make it loud. When I was ready, I looked at the folding table a few feet away from me and shouted "BOOM!"
My voice moved in a concussive wave that hit the folding table. The first thing that happened was the glass beakers shattering from the concussive waves, the next thing was the folding table sent flying, and it was about to crash and shatter against the wall if not for Professor Sageira using her magic to snatch it out of the air.
"And I thought only Psionics were capable of using Shockwave." she commented.
I looked at her and asked, "What is Psionics?"
"It is the mastery of mind magic. That mainly covers telekinesis and telepathy. Those who practice this branch of magic are few and far between." she replied.
Telekinesis and telepathy? Those are awesome spells to have! "Are you able to teach me Psionics?" I asked like an excited child.
"Eventually? Sure, but you have too much on your plate at the moment, and the study of Psionics is by no means easy, nor can you do it by reading some books. It is a practice of the mind, and you are not ready. So stop getting distracted and get back to your tests before you try out Dragon Tongue," she chided me.
"Fine, killjoy," I muttered under my breath.
"What was that?"
"Nothing!"
I set up the folding table once again and put more stained beakers on it. "Now, I am going to try the higher frequency of sound. Can I get some wax and paper? We might need to cover our ears for this."
After heating the wax and mixing it with scrunched-up paper, I made impromptu earbuds to protect my hearing and made a set for Professor Sageira, too.
As with the low-frequency test, but opposite, I want as high in pitch as I could naturally go, then enhanced it with magic. As my pitch got higher and higher, I was forced to stop because the wax earbuds were no longer helping to protect the high-pitched sound I was producing from being stabbed at my eardrums, forcing me to cover my ears with air magic to stop any sound from getting to my ears.
As my pitch got higher, Professor Sageira was forced to do the same thing as I to protect her hearing, and soon after that, I saw the glass beakers on the folding table crack and shatter. As I kept on increasing my pitch well above what both of us could hear, I soon saw the folding table start to crack and splinter.
When I stopped, Professor Sageira examined the folding table. It still held the form of a folding table, but I could tell that the moment anyone put any real pressure on it, it would break into pieces.
"This... It can do some real damage. If you invest more time and effort into this, you may be the first Sound mage in the world." Professor Sageira told me while examining the damage done to the folding table.
