On Astral Tides: From Humble Freelancer To Astral Emperor
Six Hundred And Four
“Thanks, bro. This has been fun.” My sis spoke solemnly, quite unlike her, though the effort was obviously too much, as moments later she burst into her usual sunny smile. “Wow, not like me at all. Bet you were creeped out, huh?”
“Hardly.” I chuckled. “We’ve all got our hidden depths.” We had just finished up a relaxed meal overlooking Tokyo, the rooftop terrace offering spectacular views. “But I’m glad you opened up to me. No matter what, I am your big brother, aren’t I?”
“You sure are. If you weren’t mine, who else’s would you be? Though…” She drummed her fingers on the table, a little pensive. “…no. It’s fine.”
I narrowed my eyes. “That won’t do. No backsliding!”
“Come on bro, how can you say that? You get hung up on stuff you should already have dealt with all the time. Besides, just because we’re being open and honest doesn’t mean we have to share everything. Even Eri and the others, you too, have your secrets, right?” She took a deep breath. “But… since I’m in a great mood right now, I’ll spill it. I get it… a sister to you, like Haanōbō, isn’t like me. You’ve got to tie bonds, I get it. And not just because Kin Bonding works that way, is it?” I could feel my sis messing with Brother’s Bond as she talked, turning the strands on and off as she pleased, and she seemed slyly amused as I could feel the constant changes. “Poor woman. Or girl… I’m not quite sure. She’s like Shaeula, isn’t she? Hundreds of years old, maybe more, but… rather simple. Wow, I sound like a bitch, but I don’t mean to be rude. Fae, Yōkai… they seem a little… straightforward. Not quite what I’d have expected.”
“If you want to see regal, terrifying, you should have met Nurarihyon and his wife.” I shuddered at the thought. His cold intensity, Seirei’s impossible power… Yeah, even now, I’m not sure I could protect myself against them both. Although, with Mae and Tan…
“No thanks, bro. I’ll leave the truly crazy stuff to you. My point is… oh, wait, I forgot my point, didn’t I? Oh yeah, Haanōbō… I get you were pissed off. And I’m happy as to why.” She winked at me teasingly. “You couldn’t bear to see brothers bullying their sister, because thinking of me… damn, now I’m blushing.” Indeed, my sis was a little pink, but that might have been from the chill dawn air of winter Tokyo. “It’s not like you could have said ‘I challenge you, and if I win, I’m taking your sister as a bride’, could you? So, a sister. And when you say something, you mean it. But yeah… it’s impossible not to feel a bit jealous. But you’ve fought for me before and will again. The difference is… I’m not weak anymore. I’m not going to accept second place.”
“It’s lucky you don’t have to. Although…” I paused, having a sudden, strange thought, and my sis frowned.
“Hey bro, don’t just stop talking like that. I’m getting ominous chills.”
“I was just thinking. Mom’s not old, and with Chirurgery, her health is good. We don’t have financial worries anymore either. There’s no reason she and father couldn’t have another child…”
“Eww, don’t want to think about that.” My sis stuck out her tongue. “Though… I suppose you’re right. Wow, any baby brother or sister we have would be doted on disgustingly by you, right bro? Though… honestly, I should have realised. Now you say it, it puts my feelings in context. I’m not stupid, I’ve got over that hangup, but… I’m not that quick on the uptake either. If we had another sibling, we’d love them, of course. But… the life, the experiences we’ve had together, they won’t ever go away. I’ve been, and always will be, your sister. And no matter who comes along afterwards, I’ll always have that. Maybe that’s why Eri is so confident. Or stubborn. Hard to tell, sometimes.”
“It seems you’ve got it.” I chuckled. “Whatever happens, nobody can replace you, sis, nor will our memories vanish. Especially not now.”
“True.” She nodded. “I even remember that time you ditched me and Eri to run off to Tokyo, barely ever coming home and not even calling or sending a damn text!” she glowered, her blue eyes hard, and I shrugged.
“I thought you’d let that go.”
“No, I agreed to be honest. I understand why you did it, and I’m sorry that I was part of the reason. But if I’m being honest, it hurt me bro. I was happy for you, that you were living your life, but… Eri and me, we needed to be part of your life too.”
“And you are. Both of you. now and forever, for as long as you wish.”
“That again, huh?” my sis grumbled. “I get it. Eri’s your fiancée, so you’ll be with her forever. But even were I to marry, I’d always be your sister. Oh, wow…” She perked up suddenly. “I’ve just thought. Any sibling of ours won’t just be born with a silver spoon in their mouth, no, they’ll be gold… no, diamond spoons! Makes me jealous. We’ve had it tough.”
“Yeah, though … it’s made us who we are.” I sympathised, but… our life was shaped by our hardships and joys alike. If I’d been a different person, I’d probably never have recruited Shaeula to my cause, or been the one to win Shiro’s heart. And if my sis was different… “And it’s why I’d be very happy if you were able to become the Autumn West. As supposedly it has to be kept in the family, and… you’re my precious sister.”
“Aww stop bro, you’ll make me blush. You don’t have to keep reassuring me, I’m good now. Promise. And… I want to be Autumn West too. I’ll use that power to make my Golden Sister Army unstoppable, and that way… none of my friends, none of my sisters… I won’t name them, I don’t have all day, your harem of wives is getting stupid, bro…” She winked, back in high spirits, and I privately thought that whoever finally got my sister’s attention would be fortunate indeed. Eri did a good job of dressing Aiko up. She’s gorgeous in red and white…
“…but even if I’m jealous, even if I feel bad taking up your time… I’m going to be true to myself, and have my share. Though it seems to me, being a sister to you comes with some dishonesty. I think Haanōbō is the most tsundere girl I’ve ever met. She’s so amusingly harsh towards you. But family… well, not really my problem. Metal, especially gold, element is. I’m struggling a bit though, so you’ll help me, won’t you?”
I nodded. “Sure will. You’re my next top priority.” I promised. “I could do with learning it myself. I’m fairly certain when I do, I’ll get another Class. Wielder Of Elements, Classic Eastern, I’d guess. Metal, water, wood, fire and earth. And honestly… with the huge amount of elemental energies I’m using constantly nowadays, any source of increased recovery and generation is massive. But…” I reached out, patting my sister on the head, before I withdrew my hand, and she shot me a knowing, teasing look. Yeah, I should probably stop treating her like a kid.
“…you never give up, sis. So you’ll crack it. Besides, I think our expectations are skewed, yeah? Learning an element is supposed to be incredibly difficult and dangerous, and here we are, doing it like it’s a matter of course.”
“Yeah. Honestly, sometimes it makes me wonder, bro. I get Foresight, and I’ve talked to Tsukiko-chan… nope.” My sis suddenly cried out. “No more distance. Any woman who loves you deserves a true attempt from me to be close to her. Though… Tsukiko’s so elegant and quiet, I find her a bit hard to talk to. Though I know that’s a ‘me’ problem. She’s super nice. You’re a lucky dog, bro. I’m… I’m proud of you. Don’t ever think I’m not. Anyway, makes me think sometimes, all this was predetermined.”
“I know.” I smiled, and she flushed as red as her sleeveless top. “I don’t have to say it, but I will. I’m proud of you too, sis. It may have taken a lot of effort dragging the truth out of you, but… it took bravery to open up. And… you never stop trying, even when you fail. And as my sister, you’re never second place. Oh, and as for destiny, the future set in stone? Nope, I think we’re just in the right place, at the right time. With the right spirit. And we’ll go far, go as far as it’s possible to go. Together.”
“Shit.” She clutched herself with her arms. “I’ve said it before, but damn, bro! Stop saying stuff like that, unless you want to end up with a hundred wives! I know this is just revenge for all the times I’ve ragged on you for being a clueless virgin loser, you went and became the exact opposite. But… I get it. Though it works both ways. Whatever happens in my life… I’m always going to be proud of my kind, brave, womanising big bro. So…” She stood. “…time’s wasting bro, your schedule is tight. Take me back home. Then I’m going to drag Eri out on a Christmas Eve date, as punishment for teasing me so hard today. Try not to be jealous, bro. I promise not to win her heart!”
I chuckled. “That would be one hell of an awkward relationship triangle, so best you don’t.” I opened my arms, and my sis jumped in, looking up at me with a sly smile. With that, we vanished in a spray of purple sparks, appearing in the special room set aside in our home to prevent spatial accidents.
“That’s handy as hell, bro. I really envy you and Arisu-chan, being able to teleport.”
“I envy you, having the guts to call her Arisu-chan. Though she’s definitely less guarded against girls, so…”
“That’s my bro I know and love.” My sis let out a bright giggle. “You’re not wrong, but again, I think you’re missing the target so hard you’d never be able to take up Kyūdō.”
Moments later, the door to the room opened, and Eri was there. “I thought I heard you two. So how was it? Oh? Seems like I don’t need to ask.” I realised my sis was still clinging to my arm, and with a wry smile she stepped away, smoothing down her lacy top. “It seems like you’ve talked it out.”
“Yeah.” my sis agreed, before stepping out into the sitting room. “All sorted. It was hellishly embarrassing, and I certainly never want to have to do it again, but…” She winked at me. “…my confidence is back. Or should I say… I believe in my bro. After all…” I had a bad feeling suddenly, and my sis proved me right moments later. “…considering how far he’d go for my happiness, it’d even shock you, Eri!”
“Oh? I think you’d be surprised.” Eri merely ignored her innuendo. “If you were ever doubting how much Akio loves you, then you’re probably as dumb as you used to say you were.”
“Wow, Eri, harsh!” my sis pouted, sitting down on the comfortable sofa, patting both cushions beside her, beckoning us to sit down, which we did. “Do you get what I’m talking about? Wait…” She paused, eyes wide. “You do, don’t you? Why else would you have even forced me to wear sexy underwear?”
“You’re overthinking it.” Eri shook her head, exasperated. “I’m a woman too, aren’t I? It’s all a confidence thing. When we look good, when we’re dressed well, we feel beautiful, we feel in control. Why do you think I always used to wear my bangs long, wear dowdy jeans and jumpers? And now I’ve changed my style? It’s obvious.”
“I… see?” Aiko tilted her head. “You’re right. Wow, damn, I’m getting schooled by Eri on fashion. Bro, help me, my newfound confidence has been shattered!” She clutched my arm in mock-horror, then paused for a moment, suddenly uncertain, and Eri didn’t miss that.
“Oh? Embarrassed? Then it did go like I imagined. Nobody knows you better than me, you idiot. But I also know you’re not honest.”
“Aren’t… you… creeped out?” Aiko sounded vulnerable, hesitant, and I grasped her hand, and she didn’t shake it off. “I’m not saying I want it… no, not at all, but… it made me happy when bro said he’d even go that far for me if it would stop me hurting, if I needed it…”
“I thought you knew me better than that.” Eri rolled her eyes. “You really were far gone. I’d say sorting this mess out was as important as our training. I don’t have any siblings, but really… Akio was my brother in truth, wasn’t he? We lived the same life, experienced the same things. So I sympathise. But we’re not born equal. I’m a Mori, so life for me is different. You’re an Oshiro. But if you think I care what the rest of the world thinks, even what our parents say… you underestimate me. Imagine what would have happened if when Akio moved away, my parents decided I needed to forget him and settle down with a nice local boy?”
“Wow, yeah. Wouldn’t have gone well.” Aiko agreed, and I listened to them talk silently, pleased the two of them were also clearing the air too. The three of us were always together. And whatever the future holds, our lives will always be intertwined…
“I could have lived with being alone. Get a small, pointless job in one of the few shops in Nishimorioka. But… I made up my mind. Akio was the only one for me. I would have defied my parents. Maybe… maybe if I had more bravery, I could have fled to Tokyo. Though I’d have felt wretched. Akio would definitely have given me shelter, even if it put a burden on him financially.”
“That’s right.” My sis nodded thoughtfully. “Bro would never have turned you away if you were in trouble. And… he wouldn’t turn his back on me either. Seriously, just how low was his self-esteem back then, that he didn’t realise how much he meant to us?”
“It’s not so much that, but he felt paralysed by feelings he didn’t understand or accept. It was the same for us, yes?” Eri insisted, and Aiko agreed.
“Yeah. I guess it takes the upcoming apocalypse to get us all to be honest with ourselves and each other, huh? Damn, we’re pathetic. But at least we’re all as pathetic as each other.” She couldn’t help but giggle at that.
“So don’t care what I think.” Eri shook her head firmly. “I’m just like Akio. I’d never disdain you for anything. Even if it goes against everything we’ve been taught and believe in. I’m accepting Shaeula and the others, aren’t I? And let me tell you a little secret…” She leaned in, whispering so faintly in Aiko’s ear that even I couldn’t hear.
“Oh.” Aiko flushed as red as a tomato. “I think you’re getting the very wrong idea here, Eri! My bro was the one who suggested it, I shot him down hard! I’m totally not interested in… in that! It’s just… it feels good, doesn’t it? That bro would go so far for us. He’d wade through oceans of blood, face impossible odds, and even destroy his reputation and happiness for us. How can a sister not be moved? Some tsundere girls I know could do with realising the same thing. So yeah… you get it now?”
“I most certainly do.” Eri agreed. “But you’ll really start to make me wonder if you keep getting embarrassed over your old jokes. My mother would laugh herself stupid. She’s praying for you to cause mother-in-law Emily as much trouble as I’ve caused her.”
“Wow, in that case I will!” Aiko shouted, draping her arm around Eri, pulling her into a hug, which she accepted grudgingly, rolling her black eyes again. “Eri, since my bro is being stingy and isn’t taking you out on a date, I’ll do it in his stead! Let’s go hard! Besides, I need to get you back for bullying me earlier! I can’t get married now, you’ve seen me in disgrace! Take responsibility!”
“Like I care that I’ve seen you naked. We’ve been bathing together our whole life.” Eri snorted. “As for a date, sure. But you have to make time later to hang out with Rika-san and Yae-san, since they are your responsibility. And don’t forget… this evening, there’s the concert, isn’t there? Red and White performing in Akihabara. Though the status of that event has changed…”
“Oh wow. Shit! How could I forget that! Bro, bro, you drove it out of my mind with your lewd propositions!”
“That’s better. The Aiko we know.” Eri let out a dry laugh. “Anyway, I’m at a loose end until then, so…”
The door then burst open, and Shaeula, wearing a Christmas-style red and white dress, with an amber silk shawl wrapped around her shoulders, burst in, eyes sparkling. “…I fear you are quite-quite mistaken.” Seeing that there was space beside me, Shaeula dived down and snuggled up to me. “…Yes, by-by all means go on this date. But do not-not stay out too late. Eri, you shall come with me on mine-mine!”
“I can’t.” Eri shook her head. “I was happy to give up my time for Aiko. I… was pleased Kana offered though. It makes me understand that she truly sees herself as one of us. No, I knew that already. Ugh, we’re like oil and water… but I don’t hate her…”
“Now who is being tsundere, yes-yes Eri?” Shaeula snickered. “I have always seen the true-true Kana, that she never even knew herself. But… do not-not think of it as giving up my time. Did I not-not say before, on that flight home? An activity shared is not-not an activity divided but multiplied. Besides, I know I can-can spend as much time alone with Akio as I wish in future. Mortal impatience is not-not a worry for me. For us now.” She suddenly smirked at Aiko, which made her blush.
“You do indeed look most-most ravishing. And I am pleased to see you are starting to consider…”
“No, I am not!” Aiko shouted. “Damn it, bro! Now everyone thinks I’m a total pervert!”
“Aren’t you? Who was it that declared herself the world’s biggest brocon, just mere minutes ago?” I teased, and she punched me with her free arm, though careful not to hurt her fist.
“Well, you’re an even bigger siscon! You wanted so bad to see what lucky underwear I was wearing, I just know it! And I bet that’s not all!”
“I think we can say you’re both as bad as each other, right Shaeula?” Eri suggested, and she nodded.
“I find it most-most reassuring. We were greatly concerned, Aiko. You have been… off… recently.”
“I know.” My sis stopped arguing with me. “And I’m grateful everyone cares about me. I wasn’t fair to you, Shaeula. I do love you too. You came into our lives and made everything better. But I also resented you for taking my bro from me. Because it was impossible for me to blame Eri.”
“I understand. It is quite-quite fine. I too have my jealousies. Of you, Eri. And Rossweisse. I do wish to push my Lovers’ Link to Rank eleven as soon as possible. Though…” she leered teasingly at my sis. “…perhaps you might-might beat me to it!”
“That’s where you are wrong!” my sis declared proudly, puffing out her chest. “Despite what you are insinuating, bro and I aren’t like that! He even remade the Skill for me. It’s Brother’s Bond now!”
“Oho!” Shaeula was impressed. “And you did-did think Akio would abandon you for us? You owe him a heartfelt apology.”
“Yeah.” Aiko was quiet for a moment, before she whispered to me. “Sorry, bro. for everything.”
“Don’t be.” I ruffled her hair. “I’m sorry too. But that’s the past.”
“I think-think a kiss should be sufficient apology for now-now!” Shaeula chortled, and Eri sighed.
“Don’t overcomplicate things. It’s a bit of a touchy subject right now. How would you like it if I persuaded Akio to woo your sister?”
Shaeula shrugged. “I would think that quite-quite difficult. I feel she carries affection for Talaisha, daughter of that damn-damn firefox bastard. But it is not-not like such things would bother me. Or indeed others. After all, are Rossweisse and Ortlinde not-not sisters? Besides, happiness should be shared!”
“I’m not sure if they are actual or spiritual sisters.” I changed the subject quickly. “And don’t tease her too much, okay?”
“Yeah, showing my everything to bro has left me raw and bleeding!” At my sister’s usual innuendo, I let out a relieved sigh. Yeah, it would be seriously awkward if she was too freaked out or scared to make her crappy, off-colour jokes now.
“Phrasing. Just showing wouldn’t leave you bleeding, Aiko. So what else did you do?” Her usual retort and complaint was different, Eri actually following her joke, and Aiko was frozen, blue eyes wide, before Eri and Shaeula both burst out laughing.
“That was quite-quite unexpected. For you to make such mockery.” Shaeula gasped, when her laughter was under control. “I though you did not-not like such.”
“It’s like you said on that flight. It’s good to share with those you love. Though fortunately, it seems mother-in-law Emily’s sanity won’t be destroyed. I’m just happy she’s back to her usual inappropriate, cheerful self. Besides…” Eri winked at my blushing sister. “…there’ll be plenty of time on my little date with her to tease her and find out precisely what happened. It’s easier when you’re not here, Akio. I deliberately didn’t listen in much to your thoughts, it didn’t seem fair on either of you.”
I nodded. “Thanks for that. Oh, and I wonder… just what did you talk about when I was asleep that time? It comes up a lot.”
“That’s for us to know, and you to wish you did.” My sis tried to regain the advantage, unused to being the subject of such relentless teasing. “Speaking of dates…” She nodded towards the door, where Daiyu was waiting.
“I am here for my date.” Daiyu said politely. “I did not mean to eavesdrop but…” She strode over, wearing a red and white cheongsam, her legs, visible through the slit sides, clad in white stockings, which made me glance involuntarily at my sister’s legs, clad in similar attire. “…I am glad all seems well now.”
“Pervert.” my sis chided me. “Eyeing my legs like that. Anyway… yeah, thanks Daiyu. I was just being foolish. Got lost in my own head. But I bounce back. Trust me.”
“I do.” Daiyu nodded, her hair pinned up elaborately with white and red flower hair sticks. She looked gorgeous, the contrast with her black hair and the bright ornaments like a garden. “And you shall emerge stronger for it. Our hearts can be shaken, cracked, but… nothing that has not been tested can ever be truly strong. I have nothing but pride in you as my sister.”
“Oh.” Aiko blushed, embarrassed. “Thanks Daiyu. I think you’re great too. So…” She turned to me, a stern, teasing expression on her face. “You’d best show Daiyu as good a time as you did me, bro. And… her heart should race more than mine did, or you’re a failure as a man!”
Yeah, my sis is back to her old self, no… that’s wrong. She’s at peace with herself. Though… there’ll still be challenges ahead, she’ll get unsure, she’ll falter, but… with us all together, like Daiyu says… our hearts will be strengthened, and we’ll come through it all. Together. “Considering how you nearly gave me a heart attack when I was sure you were asking me to be your…”
“I can’t hear you! La la la la!” My sis put her hands over her ears and started mock-singing loudly, and with laughter around us, I got up, going over and taking Daiyu’s hand.
“All right then. Daiyu, shall we go?” I asked, and my answer was a shy nod and an alluring smile. Great. Well, fortunately, Kana really likes Red and White, so for her date we’ll be seeing that. But Daiyu… I was surprised she didn’t want to train in the Fae lands…

“That was a delightful meal.” Asha leaned back, well satisfied. “And it pleased me to see your demeanour shift as time passed. I trust all is now resolved?”
“Yeah. I’m feeling much better about things, though my heart nearly stopped at a couple of points.” I stood up, holding a bottle of half-drunk Fae wine. “I’m glad you seem to be more at peace too. Now, there’s a tradition from the human world. I think it started in Greece or the Roman Empire. And I think it’s especially relevant here.” I produced another bottle for Asha. “It’s called a libation. Or as we say nowadays, pouring one out for the fallen. I know you Fae don’t believe in Heaven. Honestly, I don’t either now. I’ve seen what could be called Heaven personally. It’s just another world. But there is a Truesoul, that goes on, even when spirit fails. And who knows where that might end up? And if they are still watching us?”
Asha took the bottle from me with a gentle touch, her expression soft. “I believe they are within me. Perhaps they hate and resent me, or perhaps they have forgiven me… but…”
“They will have forgiven you. I promise.” I hugged her, giving her a soft kiss. “That’s what family does. Which is why my own sister is such a fool. No matter what she wants, I’ll indulge her, and… though there would be troubles, sadness… in the end, love overcomes all, yeah? Fortunately, it didn’t come to that, but… your sisters will be the same, I assure you. Now…” I went over to the white marker that was a grave for the fallen Rhyming Tree, and I spoke to it, and what it represented. “…Asha hasn’t forgotten you. She never will. And she’ll live for your share, and bring life into the world, and nature will go on. So… wherever your Truesoul dwells, share in this moment with us.” I tipped the bottle, pouring a little of the brightly coloured liquid onto the flowers and grasses growing below. “Look down on Asha and be proud of her.”
As the liquid soaked into the soil, Asha gave me a smouldering look, teary-eyed, and uncorked her own bottle. “Once more… I am sorry. If only I was stronger… they said the Myconids could not be resisted, but…” Wine poured onto the ground. “…we were wrong. Now… I shall never be weak again. Sisters, Trees which never found their other half… I shall remember you. and yes, for each of you that has fallen, I shall give the world ten daughters, who shall be taught of your sacrifice. Watch… watch over us, and them.”
“Ten, huh? Yeah, you’re determined to wring me dry.” I hugged her again, and she nodded slowly.
“It is a wide, wide world. If your dreams come to fruition, then there will be forests to fill. Though other Dryads will surely wish their chance too. Perhaps our decline can be… no, there is no perhaps. You have said it to be so, thus the slow wasting of the Dryads shall be reversed. Surely even the pitiful, those who are incompatible with no exiting Trees we know of, the lonely, withered few, shall find hope.”
“I’m sure they will.” I promised. “Our work has only just begun. Now…” We spent some time offering libations to the other fallen Trees and sisters, and when we were done, Asha let out a shuddering sigh, before she turned her now golden gaze upon me.
“Akio. I feel… this is a rather pleasant tradition. I was wrong. It seems I am not merely content to keep to myself, seeing you only occasionally. I shall… be greedy too. Can I be?”
“Of course.” I promised. “I get it. You feel the guilt, which makes you unwilling to be happy. But… they wouldn’t want that. And even though they’re gone, nobody truly dies until they are forgotten. And apparently we’re having dozens of daughters who will remember them?” I couldn’t help but chuckle at how excited my mom would be at the thought of so many granddaughters.
“You are so very perceptive.” Asha’s smile was gentle now. “So how is it you allowed your sister to reach such a troubled state of mind?”
“Didn’t want to see it, I guess. I misread her, and… no, no excuses. I am just repeating old mistakes. I felt she would be better if she was a little less dependant on me, if she lived her own life. So I thought maybe she was realising that herself.”
“But that was not what she wanted, was it?” Asha pointed out, and I agreed.
“Yeah, and I’ve no right to push her away, or live her life for her. No, as her brother, I can advise, and support, but… as long as she wants to lean on me, I’ll be there.”
“Good. Even when we offer our Kiss, and become bound to another, we are still sisters with each other, we Dryads. So take heart. Besides…” Asha’s chuckle was soft as we headed back for the Ring Gate, as it was surely time for my next Boundary date. “She loves you very much, as deeply as any of us.”
“Yeah, that’s what I was afraid of for a minute.” My own laughter was a bit ashamed. “But I’m being arrogant. Not even I’m that much of a catch. Although…” I frowned, remembering the annoying description of Brother’s Bond. “…that damn Tree. It’s starting to get in digs at me with increasing regularity. When did it get a personality?”
“I would not curse a Tree. It would make me sad…” Asha teased, and I apologised. We walked hand-in-hand through the Ring Gate, and indeed, Hinata was waiting patiently for us, though there was an impish smile on her pretty face.
“Don’t worry. I’m endlessly grateful to Yggdrasil, but it was poking at a sore spot. Sun and Moon indeed. Every Japanese person knows that myth. Anyway… sorry we couldn’t have longer, but…”
“I know.” Asha kissed me, and after we parted, a thin bridge of saliva momentarily linking us, she warmly smiled. “But even if I am feeling selfish, I respect my new sisters too. So…” She nodded politely to Hinata. “…this has been a most delightful experience. I shall return to my duties, while you… please refresh your mind and spirit.”
Hinata nodded cheerfully, before linking arms with me. She was dressed in an attractive green dress, with gold star earrings and necklace, as well as a broad silver belt and high-heeled shoes. I see. It reminds me a bit of a Christmas Tree. The girls are definitely playing to a theme.
“It is new to me as well, Asha. But I am certainly excited. The others tell me that all girls dream of a Christmas Eve date. Though ours are perhaps not as others would expect.” They exchanged a few more words, before Asha politely left us to our own devices. Hinata then pulled me close, linking our arms. “I did hear of your… exploits. I’m pleased everything went well.”
“Is everyone going to tease me about my sister?” I sighed exaggeratedly, and Hinata giggled again.
“I would think so. But we all know you don’t hate it. If we can laugh about it and tease you, then it means everything is fine.” Hinata was as shrewd as ever. “Now then…” Her brown eyes gleamed with curiosity and delight. “Daiyu and I did struggle over where to hold our dates until the last minute. But since we agreed no sex, she can’t Dual Cultivate, and… she feels it keenly.” Hinata narrowed her eyes. “Motoko’s stress has vanished, so good job with that.”
“That was all her own work.” I shook my head, and Hinata tutted, not fooled.
“Come on, being overly modest is annoying. You did your part. Of course Motoko worked hard, but… without you, it wouldn’t have borne fruit. Anyway… Daiyu… she’s… no, I’ll let her tell you, just… be a good listener, okay? She has her own worries.”
Daiyu does? I didn’t think much fazes her. But of course I’ll listen to her and offer reassurance. “Sure. But right now, at least here, I’m focussed on you.”
“Don’t worry, we all understand. You’re also with Daiyu, but to me, it feels like we’re all alone, which is what matters.” Hinata insisted. “Now then…” She looked around. “…I have a few plans first, and then I’ll let you spoil me, okay?”
“Works for me.” I agreed, and still arm-in-arm, we walked past Asha’s towering Rhyming Tree, towards the north. Unable to resist gazing at it, I felt the increasing pain of using Resonance to mitigate the effects of Shiro’s Berserk Blessing on the Tree and thus Asha. Fortunately, the Tree’s sap boiled slower than blood, so we were able to push it further, but despite that, as time passed the pain and potential injury would grow.
“Don’t worry.” Hinata correctly interpreted my gaze. She too was looking at the spectacle, though her eyes reflected different emotions, wonder and anticipation. “Asha’s not weak, and there’s no way we’ll put her at risk. Not when she’s pregnant. If it becomes too painful for her, even with your assistance, then we’ll dismiss the blessing. Shiro can let it fade at any time. But…” She gestured to the endless condensing of shining ether, which was then sucked into Mobile Ether Silos and ferried through the Ring Gates. “…look at it. It’s incredible. And I keep an eye on it, you know. Ether is money, after all.” She winked. “I trust you’re not checking, as promised?”
“I wouldn’t break my word.” I agreed, and she nodded.
“Yes, that’s what we like about you. One thing, anyway.” She squeezed my arm, and I felt the pleasant sensation of her breast against me. She was large for her short height, a fact that pleased her. And me, I have to admit…
“But I can check, as Haru-chan’s is both your Vassal, and Chosen Hero, and her Territory is holding most of the ether anyway. It makes sense for now, as the cost of building more storage here would delay us. But after Rank Four, we need to divert a portion of our income to infrastructure builds while we work on getting enough for Haru-chan’s upgrade.”
“That’s true.” I pondered that. “We’ll also have Satellite Anchors available. I don’t know how many, or all the details, but that should give us some more options.”
“Yeah, for expansion. We’ve already got a rough plan. I know you wanted to stop by Las Vegas, but events stymied you.” We reached the fields of crops Hyacinth and Asha were growing here. Many of them were odd marvels. Some of the mushrooms and toadstools Hyacinth had sprouted turned out to be both nutritious, tasty and medicinal, while others somehow produced alcohol in a similar manner to yeasts.
“Pharmaceuticals aren’t something that we have much experience with.” Hinata admitted. “Though there’s one notable house in the nobility that does have an established production line and products. Mizunuma house is one of the lower of the Fifty-Eight, and is in the Fujiwara sphere of influence, so I’ve arranged a few meetings. Giving them a small slice of the pie, in exchange for certain incentives, seemed a sensible move.”
“I trust you on that. Though I’d still like a report.”
“Of course!” Hinata agreed brightly, squeezing tighter against me, enjoying my reaction. “I’ve learned my lesson. Besides, I want your input. I promise you won’t be dissatisfied, and again, it ensures another noble house is in our clutches, and Fujiwara house is tied ever closer to us. It’ll be necessary for later. Anyway… that aside…”
She grinned as she beheld the small empire she was creating. Fae were gathering plants and tapping into towering mushrooms the size of small trees, draining their saps and fluids. “…making mixtures that exist on the Material and still have desirable properties isn’t easy, but we have a decent budget for research and development. And for some rare elixirs, we can have them transported to the Material by Ginneka and shipped to the drinker quickly. At cost which matches the trouble. Coupled with the plan to train Chirurgeons and Ether Healers from existing medical staff, setting up miracle hospitals shouldn’t be too onerous a task. Though with everything we’re dealing with, I wouldn’t expect it to be any sooner than the end of next year. Still, while our enemies attack and destroy, we’ll protect, heal and build. Perfect for getting the world on our side. And we’ll need the world, won’t we?”
“Yeah.” I agreed absent-mindedly, before spotting something interesting. “Huh, I don’t recall there being much earth element here?”
“Now that Asha’s Tree’s working overtime, we managed to redirect some of the natural flow. It’s not much different to irrigation after all, and we Japanese are experts at that. How else could we grow our rice?” She chuckled at the stereotype, but it was true. “Besides, that’s not the interesting part, is it? What is…”
She pointed to a field, fenced off and guarded by a number of black-furred weaselkin, who offered us greetings. Hinata waved her free hand cheerfully, and on seeing me looking, blushed. “I’m used to all this now. I can’t believe how adaptable I am. But… I’m loving this world you showed me. Our world. And I’ll do anything, accept anything, to keep it. So don’t worry. I’ll always support you, even if it’s a decision others can’t understand…”
I groaned. “This isn’t an Aiko thing, is it? I get that it’s funny, but…”
“It’s an anything thing, my dear husband-to-be.” Hinata stretched up and kissed my cheek. “But that aside, don’t forget… I was the one to fall in love with you at first sight. I’ve got excellent taste.”
“I remember how you looked at me that night. But I also remember you denying that all through your visit to Nishimorioka…”
“What can I say? I had my misplaced pride.” She flushed adorably, snuggling into me like a cat, the weaselkin desperately looking away politely, as we stepped into the field. All around us were small mushrooms, which seemed identical, if far smaller on scale, than the Ring Gate mushrooms. “But instead of embarrassing me… look, you can’t travel around the world as much as you’d like. But we still need to establish Territories everywhere, connected to the main hub. So… Hyacinth came up with a solution, and Asha, with her unique Skill, was able to make it work. And yes, we have cleared it with Primal Forest. So long as they are used to link areas of the Boundary he’s fine. And if we must use them in the Fae realms for some reason, he just gets concessions on some reforestation projects later on. A cheap deal.”
I nodded, using my Eyes to assess them.
These Micro Ring Gate Mushrooms draw upon abundant natural Elemental Water or Earth to grow, and as they do so, generate Spatial Element to create a mystical portal that connects two points of the lower Astral, regardless of distance, allowing transportation between mushroom rings. They have been specially optimised and created by two extremely unusual talents to be able to grow and subsist on greatly reduced Elemental energies.
“Basically, we send out the Black Wolf Company, and they carry these mushrooms in some sort of spatial storage.” Hinata explained. “After New Year, when we’ve reached Rank Four and can properly organise an isolated and guarded Ring Gate hub, they’ll travel the world, and find places they can set up the mushrooms. Then I’ll buy the land it occupies, and we’ll send through some of us who can drop a Territory. The danger should be minimal, as just like your dear sister’s…” Her smile was teasing. “…if it’s linked to the Hub, we can respond to any attack rapidly and protect it. Besides, the resources to push any number of Territories to Rank Three and drop enough defences to buy time is trivial now.”
“You have been busy, haven’t you?” I chuckled, patting her head, and she nuzzled me affectionately.
“Always. But don’t worry for me. I love being busy. It means I’m important, I have value. I’m finally happy.” She tittered cheerfully. “Honestly, I kind of wanted Sakura to be here today.”
That surprised me, but she merely winked. “It makes sense. I wasn’t the nicest to her, all these years, and she’s had her own sorrows. Yes, I found her insufferable, but then, I was a brat myself, always trying to be noticed, to impress. To be what she was. In the end though… I’m too greedy. This is my date! Maybe next year. Besides…” Her teasing tone amused me. “…she’s actually spending time with Yu-mi. She’ll go far, Yu-mi will. She’s utterly dedicated to the Adamant cause and intends to help me punish South Korea for reneging on our agreements, despite the help we gave them. Oh, that’s not the point, is it? Basically, Yu-mi and Sakura have a lot in common. I’m sure you can get it if you think about it?”
Oh. Yeah… I winced, and Hinata pinched my cheek, laughing.
“Why look so gloomy? It’s hardly your fault. And it’s not like when a door closes, it can’t be reopened one day. Besides, Yu-mi’s extremely motivated, which leads to her putting in a lot of effort, and Sakura… it’ll do her good to make friends outside of the nobility. And to become better acquainted with Mayumi and the others, as friends, not merely as daughters of the Three Great Houses.”
“You really are kind.” I chuckled, and she flushed.
“Me? Hardly. I’m just… following your example. Maximum happiness for the maximum number of people. And Sakura is family. That matters. I know that now. As for Yu-mi… she’s fun. And as her senior in Adamant, it’s my job to guide her. Anyway…” She coughed. “Let’s keep touring the fields. There are some other really interesting crops…”
We looked at fruits, flowers, fungi and more. A lot of it was fascinating. I didn’t have time in my schedule to check on everything that was going on, but clearly I was supported by a lot of people putting in a lot of effort. There were fruits that drew in elemental energies and could give a temporary boost to generation, fungi that drew metals out of the ground and secreted them in new forms, flowers that wept healing nectars, and more.
We then passed through to the Fae realms, and towards the Spring we toured the fruit orchards, and the Mirror Bee hives, which were bustling, the Bee population exploding. Honey, wax, nectars, royal jelly… all sorts of products were being made at an ever-increasing pace, and Hinata was puffed up with pride and satisfaction to see it all.
“I can practically see yen signs in your eyes.” I teased, and she nodded, not ashamed at all.
“We can’t do anything without money. Just think of how much the Pilgrimage is costing. But we’re buying both power and loyalty, aren’t we? And those are without price. Besides, even here we can earn. Etherites are flowing into our coffers, and while we don’t need them for ether any more…”
“Yeah, Ixitt always needs more for experimentation.” We approached the hill that housed the Spring, and as we did so we ran into a number of Fae who were visiting, but they made way for us as we entered the tunnel, which was now brightly lit with Japanese-style paper lanterns. We emerged into the bustle of the central mound, the lake surrounded by wooden decking, a number of cafés, stalls and shops full of curious Fae. Many were still unfinished and unoccupied, as was a large stage to the back of the site, which was to host concerts and other events, according to Shaeula, but those that were in service caught my curiosity. Many had a distinctly Japanese flavour, but quite a few were distinctly Fae. One banner caught my eye over a stall, so I took Hinata over.
“Shaved ice, huh? How does that work?” I asked the Fae who was manning the counter. They looked like a pretty young girl, shorter than Hinata, with blue hair and light green skin, black eyes and finlike ears and gills. Seeing me, she straightened up, showing respect.
“Oh, liberator of the Spring. It is an honour to serve you.” she cried, before realising she hadn’t answered my question when Hinata giggled.
“We use pure water from the spring, and… I have a rare proficiency. Some would call it useless, but…” She breathed out, and a surge of elemental energy, carrying a wintry chill, bathed the cauldron of water her stall held. It froze instantly, and I realised it was ice element. That is rare.
Once frozen, she pulled out a bronze pick, and quickly chiselled ice into a pair of large glass mugs. “What would you like with it? Oh, I could not charge you…”
“Nope, we’ll pay our way.” I grinned, fishing out some of the coins we used in my Territory. “Do you take these?”
“Of course. Everyone enjoys the treasures that come through the Gate.” the Undine agreed happily.
“In that case…” I knew Hinata leaned towards sweet tastes, so soon we were holding our glasses, topped with sugary fruity syrups, honey and an assortment of fruit slices and nuts, bronze spoons inserted. Hinata eyed them curiously, and I explained, a grin on my face.
“Shaved ice is a date or festival staple, though usually in summer. Never thought I’d see it here. Anyway, mine has a different flavour profile, so…” I offered her a bite from my spoon, and she swallowed it, making sure to lick the spoon cheekily.
“Yes, it is nice. Now… you are kissing me indirectly when you eat. Although…” Hinata shook her head, puzzled. “That seems to be a concern for ordinary girls. It never came up in class at Hanafubuki.”
“I think it’s a bit silly myself, but that’s how girls are.” Without hesitating I took a bite of my own shaved ice, and Hinata quickly fed me a bite of hers. As we walked towards the viewing platforms around the Spring, we continued to feed each other, laughing and giggling.
“I’d rather have a real kiss…” I insisted, and Hinata took the hint. Our tongues entwined, the flavours of the syrups and honey making our kiss taste sweet, and as we parted, Hinata waved her spoon for emphasis.
“You’re right. That’s far more satisfying. You know…” She flushed suddenly, before slyly reaching down and giving me a brief squeeze. “…your cream is a little bitter. Perhaps if I covered your manhood in syrup it would be different?”
“I think it’d just make me sticky and horrible.” I chortled, and as we stepped up onto the most luxurious platform, me tossing a handful of coins to the attendants, I shook my head. “Of course, you’re welcome to try, if I can return the favour, though to be honest, each of you tastes like happiness to me already…”
Her flush deepened, her skin nearly purple, and she let out an embarrassed titter, masking her amusement by taking another bite of her shaved ice. When she calmed down, she slapped my side teasingly. “Taste like happiness? How can you say such a thing with a straight face?”
“I know, right?” a familiar voice sounded from the viewing box beside us, and Hinata turned to see that Princess Estalian, sitting atop Selensha’s shoulder and clutching a half-empty small bottle of what looked like strong spirits, had spoken, smiling at us, her wings flapping rather erratically. “Don’t you agree, Selensha?”
I’d noticed them here, of course, but it seems Hinata missed them.
“I… wouldn’t dream of being disparaging.” Selensha smiled nervously. “It is good to see you two.”
“Oh.” Hinata was glad to change the subject, even though she started it, so I couldn’t help but tease her by stroking her hair gently. “Yes, you two as well. Where’s Shaeraggo?”
“Sulking.” Selensha’s expression looked somehow rueful, quite the feat with her stoatkin features. “He still strives to master more elements, and he swears he is almost there. But Sister-in-law Shaeranna declared that he is simply lazy, so… she decided to spar with him until his determination was up to the task.”
I winced sympathetically, being on the end of one of Shaeranna’s beatings… training bouts, I suppose I should call them… “He’ll get it, I’m sure. Anyway…” I sat down beside Selensha, Hinata on my other side, and taking another bite of my shaved ice, I glanced out over the Spring. “It’s a beautiful sight.” The lake itself shone with orange and indigo light, and the beams reflected by the crystalline walls were brilliant yet not harsh against the eyes. Coupled with the many hanging multi-coloured lanterns, it was like a festival in an imaginary land. Though I guess that’s what it’s like here every day…
“Yes. And since the turning of the Moon… it has glowed ever more brilliantly. I think the days when it returns to the glory I remember are coming…” Estalian sighed lustily, taking a gulp of her alcohol, messily wiping her lips, only for Selensha to gently clean her off with water element. “…I never thought I’d see this again.”
“That’s no excuse to be a mess.” Selensha chided cautiously, still paying the Fae Princess due deference and respect. “Especially not in front of them.”
“It’s fine.” Estalian waved a small hand, her words sloppier and less formal than usual. “I’ve been in worse states. Can’t help it. Mortal booze is mightily good, and… I’m small, so… it’s cheap!”
“I suppose that’s true.” Hinata agreed. “Before I leave, I should check the average daily gain in profit. We need to keep growing…”
“Do you want all the treasures of the Court?” Selensha asked, and Hinata shrugged, finishing her treat and putting down the empty glass, spoon clinking. She then took my arm, enjoying the feeling of superiority at drawing my attention with her body.
“It’s not like you are putting your Etherites, metals and gems to use.” Hinata pointed out reasonably. “And it’s obvious to me, what a civilisation in decline and stagnation needs more than dusty old relics is excitement and renewal. And that we offer.”
“True. Etherites are pretty, and in a pinch you can break them for a boost in power…” Estalian waved animatedly. “…but if I am relying on that in a fight against the Unseelie or Wild Hunt, I am already lost, most likely. But… the Court is stirring. Excitement is building, and…” She pulled on Selensha’s fur. “…how many treasures would you trade for the chance to imbue your very being with the sacred water of the Spring? And it’s even stronger now… I wish to take some of this new water myself.”
“Don’t worry.” I promised. “As the Spring refills, you’re near the head of the list, Selensha. In thanks for all your help. As for you, Princess…”
“No need for formalities.” She waved that off, face flushed from the booze.
“I’ll make sure you get your share too. Shaeula tells me you’re very reasonable, and she always appreciates how you’ve supported her from the start and hopes that continues into the future.”
“Oh…” Estalian’s pretty eyes sharpened, and she glanced at Hinata. “He’s a bit clumsy there. Best take him in hand, girl.”
“Don’t worry, we know.” Hinata chuckled, glancing up into my grey eyes, her brown ones solemn. “After all, we’re here to cover your shortcomings, as you cover ours. Though honestly, compared to your early days with the nobility, you’ve grown. And will continue to, with us at your side.”
I leaned down and kissed her lips, just a chaste brushing, since we had company, and Estalian giggled.
“It’s wonderful, love. Though old Aethelathrion is driving us insane, wondering when you’ll take one of his line as a bride. Aren’t they to your taste? Elves are certainly beautiful.”
“Actually, I’m very fond of Moira, Bell and Teare.” I shrugged. “But Moira’s not interested, which I respect. The other two… let’s just say it’s complicated, but… we’ll let nature take its course. I thought Elves were supposed to be patient?”
“Yes, almost as sluggardly as that old tree, Primal Forest.” Estalian agreed, finishing her bottle and hiccupping cutely. “Selensha, ring the bell and get them to bring us some more…”
“I’ll get these. And maybe some snacks?” I glanced at Hinata, who nodded. I shook the bronze bell that was in the box, and shortly a ratkin dressed in a maid uniform ran up, I put in an order, and soon we were surrounded by bottles and plates. “Don’t be shy, dig in. Though please… less talk of other women right now, this is Hinata’s time.”
“You’re the one providing the feast, so I’ll bow to your judgement.” Estalian didn’t hesitate, but started digging into the treats, piles of honeyed and candied nuts and fruits, while drinking strong Fae mead.
“You know my opinion on forging alliances through marriage.” Hinata spoke up. “But I’m hardly sad you want to prioritise me here and now. This… is really nice. I know I can be a bit… persistent… when it comes to always thinking of business and profit, but… I do love spending time with you too. But don’t fret… I’m never lonely. I’ve got Kazumi, the others… and now I’m even on good terms with Sakura. I may be selfish, but… I want to be a positive in your life, not a cause for regret.”
“Silly girl.” I hugged her. “You’ll never be that. Besides, I may have been pushed around by your masterful play…”
“Entrapment…” Hinata was sombre, but her slight smile showed she didn’t regret it.
“Political masterstroke…” I corrected again. “…but, and while I’m not going to claim I fell in love with you at first sight, you did catch my eye. You were a bit pushy, but very charming, and you were beautiful in purple… as you are in green.”
She giggled, face pink, even her ears shading red. “Flatterer. But… I love to hear it. While I can feel your affection through Lovers’ Link… we women need the reassurance of words too. I hope you’re telling Daiyu the same?”
“Yes. You were right, she’s a little troubled, but it’s more she needs me to assure her nothing will change. But right now, my eyes are only on you!”
“A flatterer!” Estalian was spilling crumbs, sticky ones at that, on Selensha, and as I looked at the poor stoatkin, her lips turned up in a rueful smile. At least she can cleanse herself with water element later.
“I’ve no problem offering flattery where it’s due.” I insisted. “Now then, we’ve still got time to enjoy ourselves, Hinata, so…” I took up my glass of mead, as did she, and we clinked them together elegantly. “…cheers!”
“Cheers!” she echoed, her smile now wickedly teasing. “So then, I need you to take my mind off business. We have company though, so I’m afraid you’ll have to hold in your desperate lust for me!”
Lust, huh? I looked Hinata up and down, and her prior blush deepened, but she didn’t turn her gaze away. “Don’t worry, I’ll gather all my Determination and hold out. But next time we’re alone…” I winked, and Hinata burst out into giggles.
“That’s a promise then. Grandfather is looking forward to some great-grandchildren.”
“I’m not sure it’s wise until after we get married, but… he’ll live to see them.” I promised, and Hinata nodded.
“Knowing Hiroto, he might already have some we don’t know about. Oh, but he’s not entirely useless. He finally managed to master earth element and get his Levels. He then said he wanted father to buy him a new car as a celebration. So I said if that was the case, he’d have to buy me a private jet, with how much I’ve grown!”
Listening to Hinata talk, I relaxed. Yeah, this is fun. Compared to the stresses with my stubborn sister, and the grief Asha carries… Hinata’s so upbeat, and Daiyu’s worries… well, I can resolve them without too much trouble. “I’m not sure that’s a fair comparison, but it’s true…” I agreed, enjoying the atmosphere, Estalian, and more occasionally Selensha, adding to the conversation. Yeah, this is nice. Hinata felt my gaze upon her, and she shifted her body, giving me a better view of her. Nice indeed…
