A cigarette smoldered between his fingers, and he was scrolling through his phone with his other hand, a look of pure annoyance on his face.

He thought, ‘My grandfather must be seriously bored,‘ he thought, ‘sending me here to babysit his friend’s granddaughter. Since when is this kind of errand my job?‘

Then he spotted Olivia from across the room. He immediately stubbed out his cigarette and strode over, plopping down beside her, his face now lit up with excitement.

“Well, I’ll be damned! Olivia? What are you doing at a ce like this? This is a first. Since when do you bother with this stuffy family functions?” He shed a friendly grin at Nina. “Hey there, kiddo.”

Nina gave a hesitant nod, somehow feeling a sense of fear around this overly familiar man.

Olivia responded with a nonchnt, “Came for the food,” as she cut off another piece of steak and ate it.

“Is it really that good?” Lucas sounded skeptical but picked up a piece of tempura and tried it. His eyes instantly widened. “Whoa, okay, you’re right. This is actually amazing!”

Olivia just rolled her eyes at him and couldn’t be bothered to engage.

Getting eye–rolled by her didn’t faze Lucas one bit. This was his boss, through and through, unimpressed by everything.

He remembered when he’d first met her, he could barely believe it. He then thought, ‘How could the legendary figure who dominates every field she touches be a neen–year–old girl?‘

It had taken him a long time to ept that fact, and his loyalty to her was now absolute.

He thought, ‘But wait, didn’t she say she won’t take the Shea family job? So why is she here all of a sudden? Could it be… she is actually broke?‘

“What are you doing here?” Olivia wiped her mouth and nced at Lucas.

Her question snapped him back to reality. “Oh, I almost forgot. Seeing you got me so excited, I nearly blew off my grandpa’s mission! He told me to find his friend’s granddaughter and look out for her, make sure she doesn’t get bullied.”

Lucas rubbed his temples, exasperated. “I mean,e on, me? The third son of the Grant family, ying babysitter for a little girl? It’s so beneath me!”

A sly smile touched the corner of Olivia’s mouth. “Would this friend of your grandfather’s…

    …

happen to have thest name Lane?”

“Holy, Boss, you’re psychic! How did you know that?” Lucas pped his hands in amazement, then stopped, a thought striking him. “Wait a second, how do you know that?”

“Unless…” Lucas’s gaze swept over to Nina, who was sipping her drink quietly. His eyes widened with sudden certainty. “It’s you! You’re the granddaughter, right?”

Nina visibly froze mid–sip. Before she could even form a denial, Olivia let out a soft sigh. “It’s

    me.”

Now it was Lucas’s turn to be stunned. His hand hung motionless in the air. He thought, ‘My grandfather asked me to take care of… my boss? Oh god, the things I just said…‘

Lucas immediately sped his hands together and bowed his head toward Olivia three times in a quick, apologetic gesture. “Olivia, I’m so sorry. Please forgive me!”

Olivia lifted her eyeszily and couldn’t be bothered to make a big deal out of it.

“But, uh,” Lucas began, his voice trembling slightly, “I think Grace probably told you to, you know, keep a low profile…”

“Haven’t I been low–key enough?” Olivia retorted, pointing at her outfit. This down jacket was literally the cheapest item in her closet.

Lucas immediately backpedaled. “No, no, that’s not what I meant… I mean, you’re maybe a little too low–key.”

“For an event like this, everyone’s supposed to be in formal wear. Look, even I got strong- armed by my grandpa into wearing a suit.” He gestured vaguely at his own attire.

“Since when,” Olivia said, raising an eyebrow, “do you get to have an opinion about what I wear? I’ll wear whatever I want.”
