This clite SAT prep course was selective. It even required a letter of rmendation. Grace had gotten Troy to write one for Olivia.
“Alright,” the man at the desk said. He took the letter and typed Olivia’s information into the system.
He leaned in and lowered his voice. “Just a heads–up, today’s teacher is Ms. Brown, and she has zero tolerance for students beingte. My advice? Apologize, keep your head down, and just let her get over it.”
The man handed Olivia her student pass and pointed her toward the stairs to the second floor.
“Thanks, I got it.” Olivia nodded back politely.
She hated studying and definitely didn’t want some teacher breathing down her neck. But she waste, so she’d have to suck it up.
Since she’d promised Grace she’d take this seriously, she decided to just act like a normal student and follow the rules.
As Grace went up the stairs, she could hear someone speaking fluent Englorian from a ssroom to her left.
In the hallway, she ran into some guy in a suit–probably a course supervisor. He was clearly annoyed to see her just strolling in. “You’re just getting here now?” he snapped. “Do you have any concept of time?
“The SAT doesn’t give you extra minutes to waste. You think five minutes is nothing? You’ve just thrown away valuable prep time.”
Olivia let out a soft scoff. ‘Seriously? It’s five minutes, not the end of the world.
But he wasn’t finished. “I have no patience for students like you with no respect for time. Do you have any idea that Ms. Brown is using her own break to teach this cram session? The least you could do is show some gratitude…”
Olivia just gave him a side–eye and kept walking, heading straight for the ssroom. He was left standing there, his mouth still half–open. He nced around, relieved that no one had seen him get so thoroughly shut down.
‘This kid’s got some attitude, he thought. ‘But whatever. I don’t have to deal with her. Ms. Brown will eat her alive. I can’t wait to see her get tossed out.
Olivia walked to the ssroom door and gave it a light knock. “Sorry, I’mte,” she said quietly. “Got stuck in traffic.”
The Englorian lesson screeched to a halt. The tiered ssroom went silent, and every pair of eyesnded on her. Olivia paid them no mind, heading for an empty seat in the back.
“Stop right there,” a sharp voicemanded from the front. The woman at the lectern pushed her sses up her nose. “Did I say you coulde in?”
Olivia paused, finally taking in the teacher. Her skin was rough and wrinkled. Behind a pair of red–framed

sses, her eyes were small and beady. Her face was all sharp angles with high cheekbones and thin lips.
‘She looks like a real piece of work,‘ Olivia thought. She instantly disliked her and felt a spark of annoyance. And this bis /bsupposed to be the best SAT prep course? Where’d they find thisdy?‘
Olivia just ignored her and continued toward the back. But what happened next proved the teacher was even worse than she looked.
“Are you deaf, or are you ignoring me?” Hallie Brown snapped, mming her lecture notes on the desk. “Now, get up here.”
Hallie knew that some bumpkin had pulled strings to get into her ss. She didn’t need to ask who. One nce at Olivia’s cheap outfit, and she knew this had to be the one. Just seeing Olivia was enough to set her off.
Hallie was a star teacher at Hirica Central High School, a big name in the city’s education circles since her youth. Honestly, if the pay wasn’t so ridiculously good, she never would have stooped to teaching a ss like this.
