CHAPTER 62: OIL

The next day Adam still woke up early. It was a habit now ingrained in him from years of struggle.

As soon as he came out of his apartment after getting ready he saw that Sophia was standing outside his gate. She was lost in some deep thoughts just staring at his door.

She had not even rung his doorbell today. Adam usually woke up to that sound. But today due to his old habit he had already woken up early. He had been waiting for Sophia.

But when she did not ring the bell he thought that perhaps Sophia herself was late today. That’s why Adam got ready first. As soon as he opened his gate he saw that Sophia was already there fully ready and just standing outside.

As soon as Sophia saw that Adam had opened his gate her cheeks became completely red with shame. She was not going to say anything. She just looked down at her feet.

"Have you just come here?" Adam asked his voice a little curious.

Hearing this Sophia immediately said hesitatingly "Yes yes you are right. I have just come here." But the truth was that Sophia had been standing there for a long time.

Her mind was repeatedly telling her to just ring the bell and call Adam. But she was paralyzed by the thought of what had happened yesterday. The image of Adam with that other girl was burned into her mind.

She had gone to her friend Monty and told him everything. Monty had tried to explain to Sophia for a long time that she was overthinking things.

But the same thoughts were going on in Sophia’s mind again and again. And eventually even Monty’s words had stopped reaching her. She had gotten so immersed in her own negative thoughts. Sophia had not been able to sleep at all last night.

Now standing in front of him Sophia again started remembering the moment when Maria had come to his apartment with Adam. She was so lost in her thoughts that she did not even hear what Adam was saying.

Adam saw that Sophia was completely lost. He closed his gate and came and stood in front of her. He waved his hand in front of her face. "Sophia what happened?" he asked his voice now filled with a little concern.

Hearing this Sophia snapped out of her thoughts. She looked at Adam and said nothing. She just stared at him her eyes full of a strange mixture of emotions.

Then Adam saw that there were dark circles under Sophia’s eyes.

He was very surprised to see this. "I have heard that you teach your classmates very well," he said trying to lighten the mood. "But losing your sleep for them is a very praiseworthy thing." Even from just looking at her Adam could tell that Sophia had not slept well last night.

Sophia just raised her hand dismissively. "No it is nothing like that," she said. "It’s just that yesterday there was a little more work at the school."

Adam just smiled. "You should not put so much stress on your body," he said. Saying this he started walking from there. Sophia also started following him.

However throughout their journey to the school Sophia was completely silent. There was only one question going on in her mind. I should ask Adam who that girl was. What is Adam’s relation with her? But she was repeatedly afraid. What will happen if Adam gives the answer which I don’t want to hear?

Adam also got very surprised. He thought I have been going to school with Sophia for some days now but this much awkwardness has never happened between us.

Adam turned towards Sophia to say something. He opened his mouth. At the same time Sophia also turned towards Adam to ask him her question. She also opened her mouth to ask.

Then both of them looked at each other and stopped. Adam stopped himself seeing that Sophia was about to ask something. But Sophia stopped herself thinking that Adam was about to say something. Both of them became silent again.

Adam looked at Sophia again. "Do you want to say something?" he asked.

Hearing this Sophia was surprised. She looked at Adam. At first she was about to refuse. But then she suddenly asked "Adam who was she?"

Hearing this Adam was very surprised. He thought Who is Sophia talking about? Then Adam looked at Sophia and getting confused said "Who are you talking about Sophia?"

Hearing this Sophia who was already very nervous said looking down at the ground "The girl who came with you to your apartment yesterday."

After hearing this Adam finally understood that Sophia must be talking about Maria. Then Adam thought what he should tell her about who Maria was. He could not tell her the truth.

Then Adam remembered that Maria would be working with his friend Andrew from now on.

So an idea came to his mind. He looked at Sophia. "So you are talking about Maria," he said his voice now calm and casual. "She is actually my friend’s friend. Or should I say my friend Andrew’s girlfriend."

As soon as Sophia heard this the sadness the confusion and the nervousness on her face suddenly disappeared. A bright smile appeared on her lips. "Is she your friend’s girlfriend?" Sophia asked her voice now light and cheerful. "But what was she doing with you at your apartment?"

Adam thought what he should tell Sophia about what she had just said. Then he again thought of another lie. "She had actually come to take some of her stuff from my friend Andrew," he said. "They are both going somewhere for a few days."

Hearing this a wave of peace and happiness ran through Sophia’s mind.

She was unable to understand why she was feeling so relieved. She had tried a lot to understand herself but nothing had worked. She just knew that she was happy now. And that was all that mattered.
