After taking Rouge to Windmill Village and a brief chat with Garp, Ikki departed. His journey wasn’t long; by the time he returned to Jaya Island, the Going Merry had just finished its renovations. As in the original story, the Merry’s figurehead now resembled a chicken, earning it the new name, the Flying Merry.
Upon Ikki’s arrival, the Straw Hat Pirates eagerly greeted him, urging him aboard. They were moments away from setting sail, with the Sky Current’s eruption imminent.
The Sky Current’s Ascent
The Sky Current, also known as the Monster Current, is one of the Grand Line’s most astonishing phenomena. Beneath the Grand Line lie numerous volcanoes. Seawater pours into these craters, generating a vast amount of steam. When enough steam accumulates, it erupts, creating the soaring sea current.
The Merry approached a massive vortex, appearing like a black hole relentlessly swallowing the sea. Just as everyone braced for the Merry to be consumed, the ocean suddenly stilled.
"Huh? Did the Sky Current’s eruption fail?" Sanji wondered aloud, curious.
"It’s calmed down, which means the eruption has begun! Everyone, hold onto the Merry!" Ikki shouted.
Hearing Ikki’s warning, everyone gripped the Merry’s hull tightly. Suddenly, a colossal bulge emerged from beneath the sea, lifting the Merry. The bulge grew rapidly, and then, as if breaking through an invisible barrier, the Sky Current propelled the Merry upward. The ship’s bottom clung to the current’s side, beginning its upward climb.
However, after ascending less than a hundred meters, the hull felt as if it were about to capsize. Seeing this, Ikki looked at Nami, who was deep in thought, biting her fingers to find a solution.
At that moment, a thunderous roar echoed from above. Ikki glanced up to see a monstrous fish, several times larger than the Merry, plummeting from the sky directly towards their ship.
"Nami, the Merry’s in your hands!" Ikki yelled, then shot into the sky, flying straight for the colossal fish.
With the strange fish less than thirty meters from the Merry, Ikki, wielding Thor’s Hammer, struck it with immense force, sending it flying away. Simultaneously, Nami, with her exceptional navigation skills, successfully maneuvered the Merry onto the soaring currents.
Seeing their success, Ikki recalled Mjolnir and his shrinking flashlight. If Nami had failed, he’d planned to shrink the Merry and its crew, then transport them to the Sky Island himself. But Nami had proven her worth, successfully guiding the Straw Hats to an altitude of 10,000 meters.
Arrival at the White Sea
The Merry broke through the clouds at 10,000 meters, successfully reaching the White-White Sea below Sky Island.
"Is this an Empty Island
?" Nami murmured, awe-struck by the beautiful white expanse of sea.
Sabo smiled, "This is my first time seeing something like this. It’s a shame Ace couldn’t come!"
Meanwhile, Luffy, Chopper, Franky, and Usopp had already jumped onto the clouds, bouncing like they were on a trampoline.
"This should just be the Cloud Ocean on the lower level of Sky Island," Robin stated, holding an old logbook. "If we want to enter Empty Island, we’ll have to keep sailing up!"
After their brief discussion, Usopp, a non-Devil Fruit user, impulsively decided to "dive" into the Cloud Ocean, eager to discover if it had a seabed. He activated his Observation Haki while diving, and what he saw shocked him.
His Haki’s range showed him a view 10,000 meters above the sky. In other words, there was no seabed beneath the Cloud Ocean; it was nothing but air 10,000 meters below. Terrified, Usopp quickly deployed his Kaido Headset without a word, fearing he’d plummet to his demise.
Encounter with Wiper
As everyone continued to admire the beautiful scenery and press forward, a small black dot suddenly flew towards the Merry from the distance.
The approaching figure held a rocket launcher in one hand and a shield in the other. He had dark skin, a wooden mask, a pair of seemingly useless wings on his back, and skate-like shoes. Ikki recognized him as Wiper, a warrior of the Shandians.
Upon seeing the Straw Hats’ ship, Wiper charged without hesitation. Luffy, Zoro, Sanji, and others quickly moved to intercept him, but in their first clash, all three were knocked back.
Luffy gasped, bewildered, "Why do I feel weak and have trouble breathing...?"
Ikki explained, "It’s because we’ve suddenly ascended to an altitude of 10,000 meters. Your bodies will naturally react to the change."
After felling Luffy and the others, Wiper didn’t stop. He leapt into the air, aiming his rocket launcher at the Merry. Ikki naturally couldn’t allow him to succeed. However, before Ikki could act, an old man riding a strange bird intercepted Wiper’s attack.
Seeing his assault thwarted, Wiper planned to retreat. But of course, Ikki wasn’t about to let him leave so easily. As the saying goes, "Now that you’re here, let’s have a meal before you go!" With that, Ikki
spread his wings and pursued Wiper.
A Strange Dinner Invitation
Meanwhile, Gan Fall, who had just landed on the Merry, was stunned watching Ikki chase after Wiper. "Hey... that Blue Sea man, he’s very dangerous!"
Hearing Gan Fall’s warning, Nami stepped forward with a smile. "Don’t worry, old man, Ikki is incredibly strong!"
Gan Fall said nothing more, instead beginning to discuss business with the Straw Hats.
On the other side, Ikki effortlessly caught up to Wiper, who was gliding across the open sea. Wiper hadn’t expected a Blue Sea man to dare chase him.
"You’re asking for death...." As he spoke, Wiper turned his rocket launcher towards Ikki. Just as he pulled the trigger, a ray of light enveloped him, transforming him into a large white goose.
This sudden change left Wiper stunned. Ikki stepped forward, grabbed the now-goose Wiper by the neck, and grinned. "You’re here, let’s have a meal before leaving! Northeastern iron pot goose stew, you deserve it!"
Wiper: ...
When Ikki returned to the Merry with Wiper, Gan Fall had already departed. Seeing the large white goose Ikki was carrying, Sanji smiled. "Didn’t you catch the attacker? Why’d you bring back ingredients instead?" As soon as he spoke, Sanji reached out to take the goose.
Wiper, enraged that these Blue Sea people considered him food, roared, broke free from Ikki’s grasp, and attacked Sanji.
At this moment, the translator Chopper interjected, "He says he’s not an ingredient; he’s a great Shandian warrior..."
Ikki nodded. "He’s indeed not an ingredient; he’s the one who attacked us earlier." Having said this, Ikki pulled out a small book – it was the tale of Great Liar Norland. Ikki opened the book, pointed to the great warrior Kalgara of the Golden City described within, and announced, "This Shandian is a descendant of Kalgara!"
Wiper also noticed the small book Ikki held, and upon hearing Ikki’s words, he was stunned. Wiper had grown up listening to the story of Kalgara, and he deeply yearned for the friendship between Kalgara and Norland. It was precisely because of this that he hoped to reclaim his homeland and then ignite the lamps of Shandora. He knew that Norland must be long dead, but... he also believed that Shandora’s light could spread throughout the Heaven Kingdom...
