CHAPTER 247: CHAPTER 247 THE WITNESS WHO SAW YOU STRANGLE CHARLOTTE HASTINGS

"Ma’am, did you see Molly this afternoon?"

"We can’t find her anywhere and the reception is quickly filling with patients who wish to see you."

Those were the first two things Kelsie heard when she opened the door of her office that evening.

The elderly janitors stood before her, cradling their cleaning materials with the most confused looks on their faces.

Kelsie forced a smile as she stepped out and closed the door behind her.

"Molly won’t be coming back." Though she was smiling as she walked past them, there was nothing in her tone to assure them everything was alright.

However, Kelsie didn’t seem to be in the mood to speak with anyone, so they asked no questions and quietly went back to work.

That day, Kelsie worked as her own receptionist, doctor, assistant, and nurse.

Before six in the evening, she changed the OPEN sign to CLOSED and dismissed the staff.

She had just turned to return to her office when a knock sounded on the door.

The outside lights were already off, so she couldn’t see what the person outside looked like.

However, she could make out the outline of a suit despite the lack of lighting, but because of recent events, she didn’t want to take any chances by being careless.

So she took out her phone to call Jett.

Eyes still pinned on the figure, she put the call on speaker and watched as the person reached into his pocket.

As if sensing her suspicion, he answered and put his call on speaker as well.

"It’s me." The calm, soothing voice filled the quiet reception.

Ending the call, she slipped the phone into her pocket with one hand and unlocked the door with the other.

Swinging it open, she smiled faintly at the sight of the man. "You came."

Jett grimaced, lifting the bags of food he had brought with him.

"I brought food too."

She stared down at the bags.

They weren’t takeouts, but he hadn’t even come to see her throughout the day. What were the odds he’d really spent hours making her dinner?

Nevertheless, she pushed the door wider to let him in.

Jett watched her slide both hands into her pants before strutting to one of the chairs in the reception.

"Honestly, I thought I’d find you at home." He shrugged, taking a seat beside her.

Kelsie smacked her lips together.

"I was in interrogation for a few hours. So I planned to stay here and wash off the foul stench of almost going to prison."

He paused slightly, not knowing how to react to such cynicism.

Just as they separated, Maxwell Kensington had made him promise not to tell Kelsie about him.

So when she spoke like this, he didn’t know how to tell her they’d certainly get her out tomorrow without divulging anything about Maxwell.

Since he couldn’t think of anything she’d find reassuring, he said nothing and quietly began taking out the food.

Kelsie, however, mistook the silence for something else.

The corners of her lips twitched, and she chuckled inwardly.

Oh, well. At least he was thoughtful enough to serve her dinner before breaking up with her.

Breaking up with her? How ridiculous. Like they were ever even dating.

He never officially asked her out or anything and she never thought much of it until now.

But either way, he must’ve realized by now that he was better off far away from her. At least until Jane proved she was being falsely accused.

With everything Molly divulged to her today, she doubted they’d ever meet again after court again.

If they ever did, it would definitely be in court fighting for custody over the triplets.

But that was thinking too far ahead. She’d be out of here with her children before anyone knew it if things went south tomorrow. So for now, she’d just enjoy this last moment with him.

"I didn’t know exactly what you’d like to eat, so I made a lot. Then Zade and Keira helped me decide which ones you were likely to enjoy. They mostly consist of meat though," Jett recounted as he pushed the plates toward her.

"I love meat." Kelsie didn’t beat around the bush and picked the first plate within reach.

Seeing her reach her spoon toward the soup, he sighed warily.

"I thought the soup was too spicy, so I added water, but that only made it watery. So I added soup thickener. I never tasted it, ’cause I felt I made a disaster. A bad reputation to my wonderful cooking skills, if you ask me."

Kelsie didn’t say a word until she’d had two spoonfuls, then she flashed him a small smile. "It’s good."

One- and two-word replies.

His eyes fell slighty.

Kelsie wasn’t one to say much, but he was smart enough to know it was because of him.

He opened his mouth to speak, but she suddenly set the plate aside and climbed into his lap, cutting off his words with the press of her mouth against his.

A flicker of surprise crossed his face, but instead of recoiling, his hands found their way to her hips.

Her bare thighs settled on either side of him, soft skin against his taut muscle.

Feeling his pants tighten, he shifted uncomfortably and stopped her from moving. "Wh-what are you doing?"

"I turned off the cameras." She said blandly, reaching to entwine her fingers with his before lifting them to her lips, planting kisses from the tips of his fingers to his arms.

As she nibbled at his ears, his jaw clenched, and he swallowed forcefully, feeling his pants tighten further.

Her hand traveled down his torso, nails deliberately dragging over his skin until he twitched beneath her.

The moment her fingers slipped into his waistband, his eyes flew open, and he subconsciously grabbed her hand.

His eyelids twitched, a faint hue of pink creasing his cheeks as he stared down, slightly embarrassed by his hardness.

Kelsie stared up at him without uttering a word, her left hand pacing through his thighs until it slipped into his waistband.

In a jiffy, her fingers wrapped around him, firm but teasing, stroking in a torturously slow rhythm.

His hips lifted, but she pressed her free hand to his stomach to hold him still.

She shifted down between his legs and took him into her mouth, just the tip, letting her tongue tease the underside with maddening patience.

He groaned, deep and ragged, and tried again to move, but she pulled back with a slow suck, then looked up at him with glistening.

Then she went deeper, her mouth warm and wet. She started slow, swallowing inch by inch, dragging pleasure out until his head tipped back, muscles locked, and barely able to contain his breathing.

His hands gripped the chair now, knuckles white as he trembled with restraint.

She moaned softly around him, and the vibration made him shudder.

When she felt him nearing the edge, gripped him tighter, sucked harder, until he felt the warm liquid in her mouth.

She stayed still, swallowing him, licking him clean, before finally pulling away and straightening up.

While he fought to catch his breath, she took her seat beside him and picked up the bowl of soup.

Slurping it down, she smiled, "It’s delicious."

An hour later, they were both driving back to the apartment building in their separate cars.

Morning came very quickly and Kelsie prepared the children for school like every other day.

Jett left her a note, promising to be on time for the arraignment whilst Daniel followed as she took the triplets to school so he could accompany her to the court arraignment.

Along the way, he turned to her and promised earnestly, "Don’t you worry, sister-in-law. Jett will try everything he can to make sure you don’t go to prison."

Kelsie chuckled softly, briefly glancing at him. "What’s the use? They have my prints on the murder weapon."

"I’m certain Jett will find his way around it." Daniel repeated without meeting her eyes.

Kelsie said nothing else until they got to court.

She had just arrived when the detectives from last night walked toward her with cuffs, smiling smugly.

"Is this your best outfit? Because I seem to remember telling you to wear it as it’ll be the last thing you wear as a free woman."

"What are you doing? Get your hands away from her!" Daniel hissed, shoving the officer cuffing her.

He was immediately restrained by two other officers who ran toward them.

Kelsie frowned, quietly walking inside with the detectives.

By right, she shouldn’t be cuffed. Not when she didn’t spend the night in the interrogation room.

But if the detectives cuffed her so arrogantly, didn’t that mean they were certain they’d jail her for murder?

When she entered the courtroom, she found Jane was already waiting.

Jane, who was checking her phone for a message, promptly put it away and got on her feet to wave at Kelsie.

She had just walked to her when the clerk announced the judge’s presence.

Once the judge was seated, the clerk continued, "Calling the case of the People versus Kelsie Sutton, charged with first-degree murder. This is an arraignment."

The judge wore his glasses before beckoning onto the prosecutor, "Prosecution, you may call your first witness."

"Apologies your honor, but the witness who saw the crime is running late because the defendant had him hauled away to prison." The prosecutor began.

Kelsie’s eyes snapped toward him, immediately narrowing in confusion when she saw him staring at her with a thin smile.

"But don’t worry, he’ll be here soon... to testify that he saw you strangle Charlotte Hastings with her hair."
