Otherworld Advance Team
Chapter 1898 - 1891: Selecting the Virtuous and Capable
CHAPTER 1898: CHAPTER 1891: SELECTING THE VIRTUOUS AND CAPABLE
"I am aware of my identity and the way I interact with people. I will not be overly humble, nor will I be arrogantly self-important," Luo’er said.
"So, what do you require of me, Commander?" Nightingale closed her book and asked earnestly.
"Have you agreed?" Luo’er asked with some surprise.
"Why not," Nightingale smiled and continued, "If the Headquarters were to invite me, it’s not certain they’d succeed. My relationship with them is cooperative, not hierarchical..."
As she spoke, she slowly raised her head, gazing at the scenery outside the window at a forty-five degree angle, and said dreamily, "But now, I am a part of Lipei. I witness the revival and prosperity of this city, well aware of the threats it faces. I very much like this city..."
"With the new city established, a great coherence follows. Talented people are selected, faith is upheld, and harmony is pursued. Thus, people extend care not only to their own kin, providing for the elderly and employing the strong, nurturing the young, and providing for the lonely, the widowed, the orphaned, and the disabled..."
"This city is so charming, like the brightest lighthouse in this world. I do not wish for it to be overwhelmed by darkness. I do not want slaves to reappear on Lipei’s land nor brigands to run rampant. So, I will do my utmost to maintain the status quo. Anyone who opposes Lipei, I’ll fight them to the end—that’s my attitude..."
She said, looking earnestly at Luo’er, "Now, I am a part of Lipei, and you are Lipei’s highest authority. You can command me to do anything, rather than simply engage in cooperative discussions. I do this for responsibility and for the people of Lipei."
"Thank you for your support of Lipei," Luo’er said with admiration.
"Go ahead," Nightingale waved her hand nonchalantly, "Tell me what to do. You should know my abilities, so don’t place me in an unsuitable position."
"I hope you can be responsible for the drafting and release of documents at the Commander’s Office," Luo’er stated without concealment.
"Is it because of my literary skills?" Nightingale asked.
"Yes," Luo’er nodded, "You once worked on compiling textbooks for the academy, so you should be able to handle this documentation work."
"Alright then," Nightingale nodded and sighed slightly, closing her book with a hint of anticipation, "Looks like I’m going to be busy again."
"I want to help too, I can help!" Fulajie’er said loudly.
"Well, you can serve as my secretary," Luo’er thought for a moment and said, "You and your sister are responsible for the secretarial work at the Commander’s Office."
"What’s a secretary do?" Fulajie’er asked, confused.
"Well... just be my mouthpiece," Luo’er replied.
"That’s not difficult," Fulajie’er remarked naturally.
"It’s not that simple. Besides these tasks, a secretary has many other duties," Luo’er spread his hands, "But since you’re a spirit, you can’t handle these tasks, so you’ll be responsible for communication."
"Why do I feel like you’re dismissing me?" Fulajie’er asked discontentedly.
"Don’t overthink it. I’m just considering how others will accept you. After all, they’re all materialists, and getting them to believe in ghosts is quite challenging," Luo’er explained.
"I won’t frighten them," Fulajie’er explained.
"Better not. This is work, not the Advance Team."
"What do you mean, are you saying all I did in the Advance Team was play?" Fulajie’er asked, indignant.
"Ah, you’re overthinking again, that’s not it at all..." Luo’er comforted her helplessly.
Nightingale remained silent, quietly observing the interaction between Luo’er and Fulajie’er. Finally, she sighed softly and shook her head, saying, "Indeed, it’s better for this girl to stay by your side. When she’s with me, she’s always talking about you."
"Sister!" Fulajie’er shouted angrily, expanding her domain.
"What’s there to be shy about? Being straightforward is a good thing," Nightingale said indifferently.
"In any case, I leave everything to you two," Luo’er intervened to smooth things over.
After settling the two sisters, Luo’er didn’t disturb Xia Yue any further; he just bid farewell and left the library.
Although he sincerely hoped Xia Yue could help him, upon reflection, this idea was completely unreliable.
After all, she was a god, with the ability to refuse. If he brought her in, it wouldn’t just be about giving orders; he might end up being the one commanded.
As he reached the door, he saw a squad of soldiers lined up at the entrance. Hu Daoke, in uniform, wearing a military hat and sunglasses, saw Luo’er and broke into a heartfelt smile.
"Stand at attention, salute!"
At his command, the soldiers holding rifles stood at attention and saluted.
"What’s this for?" Luo’er said somewhat helplessly.
"I heard the boss was conducting a covert survey, so we came especially to protect you," Hu Daoke stated authoritatively.
"In public, address me as Commander," Luo’er shook his head to remind, "Also, I’m not conducting a covert survey, don’t make it sound like something it’s not."
"Oh, understood, Commander," Hu Daoke replied loudly.
"Is there a vehicle?" Luo’er asked.
"There is, there is!"
Hu Daoke motioned for two soldiers, who drove over a steam-powered vehicle.
Looking at the somewhat classic vehicle, with thick steam billowing from the tail, Luo’er shrugged, opened the door, and got in.
"Where to, Com... Commander?" Hu Daoke asked as he climbed into the passenger seat.
"To the school," Luo’er thought for a moment and said.
"Going to the school, are you going to check on those kids?" Hu Daoke raised an eyebrow and asked.
"Yes, after sending those kids to school, I haven’t seen much of them. I wonder how they’re doing," Luo’er nodded and said.
"But Commander," Hu Daoke commented, "the school is under civil administration. You’re in charge of military, isn’t it inappropriate to inspect the school?"
"What are you saying," Luo’er said seriously, "I am the highest authority of Lipei, in charge of both administrative and military affairs. What do you mean it’s not my jurisdiction? I’m not on equal footing with Murong."
This reminder made Hu Daoke remember.
Luo’er’s rank was Major General, and he was the only General in Lipei. Although Murong was in charge of civil affairs, his rank was merely Colonel, totally incomparable to Luo’er.
Luo’er, who was usually humble in front of outsiders, would only show a rare arrogance in front of his own men.
The vehicle stopped at the school gate, and the soldiers accompanying him dismounted, surrounding the entrance and stunning passersby and school staff.
"What’s this about? It’s not a robbery, disperse,"
Hu Daoke was the first to get off the vehicle, motioning for everyone to disperse.
He knew Luo’er’s temperament well; with his character, he absolutely disliked such ostentation.
However, the commotion caused by the entourage had already set the entire school abuzz. It was break time, and quite a few students and passersby gathered to watch.
Lipei Academy was the largest building complex in the entire Lipei city, consisting of dozens of tall buildings and extensive sports areas.
The school was similar to a shelter, not only enrolling students but also housing tens of thousands of orphans from the Otherworld. Among them were Aud people, Elf Dwarves, and even mixed-blood of the Demon Clan.
Because of the immense influence of this school, Lipei people always proudly mentioned when talking about Lipei, that the two major landmarks of Lipei were the Otherworld Gate and Lipei Academy.
Luo’er got off the vehicle and looked around. Perhaps because of becoming a General, he began to exude an aura that instills fear, causing everyone his gaze met to instinctively avert their eyes.
People around murmured about his identity and intent, a strange fear pervading the crowd.
This was mainly because, with the armed guards by Luo’er, holding rifles, they gave an impression that they were there to round people up. The boundless imagination of young minds always leads to tremendous diffusion.
Just as everyone was agitated with fear, suddenly, a joyful shout emerged from the crowd: "Ah, Daddy’s here!"
Everyone looked over and saw Yaning, known for her daftness, rush over excitedly and, under everyone’s eyes, hug Luo’er.
"Yaning..."
Luo’er looked at her, not only not avoiding her embrace but also showing a warm smile.
