Chapter 544 544: Bloody Battle on the City Wall, Part 2 (Seeking Subscription)
The sleepers roared as they charged out of the forest, engulfed in flames and bombarded by torrential fire, only to find awaiting them in front were rows of spikes protruding from the earth. Their massive bodies crowded in the narrow space, turning the spearhead units into perfect targets, unable to move forward or retreat.
Catherine stood on the ramparts with her arms open, firing rocket after rocket mercilessly at the battlefield. After each round of fierce bombardment, she had to stop and retrieve food from her spacial ring to eat heartily. Unlike Pei Yan, who needed to absorb and transform weapons, Catherine's ability itself was her weapon, allowing her to seamlessly shift from the eighteen classic weapons of the cold weapon era to various modern firearms on her body.
However, the downside was that the more powerful the weapons she transformed and used, the more they drained her energy, requiring her to replenish her strength with food over time. Noticing this, Kodwen simply assigned her four soldiers who did nothing but serve her food, a seemingly ridiculous act but, faced with the imminent threat, she could only endure the elaborate care while using her ability to bombard the front lines.
The professional demon race warlocks nearby, who usually held high respect, did not receive such privilege. These poor fellows, after completing their own tasks, were forcibly retained and sent to deal with the corpses of the sleepers lying across the battlefield. Seeing the ruthless look in Kodwen's eyes, they knew well that this commander, appointed in a crisis, was not someone to provoke. Fortunately, dissolving lifeless corpses did not consume much magic power, so they obediently followed orders, planning to report him after the battle.
Little did they know, Kodwen, holding a determination to die, had long been fearless of such threats.
Under the warlocks' minimal application of death magic, the mountain of corpses piled between blades beneath the walls gradually withered into ashes and vanished. Watching the sleepers blocked out by spikes outside the walls who were continually eliminated, Kodwen and the demons atop the ramparts breathed long sighs of relief, seizing this moment of reprieve.
Just as the sleepers fell one after another and the situation seemed to turn for the better, a streak of red light flickering through the night raised Kodwen's previously relaxed heart back to his throat.
He rose from his seat and jumped down from the watchtower, patrolling the walls while whipping the relaxed soldiers' thick helmets with his whip, shouting loudly, "Stop standing around! Everyone, stay alert! The real threat has arrived tonight!"
Under Kodwen's urging, the seasoned veteran soldiers resting against the walls instantly regained their spirits, gripping their weapons and staring beyond the battlements. In just a moment, the Red Armored Warrior armies appeared within everyone's sight.
Without assembling or forming ranks, the Red Armored Warrior Group launched attacks almost the instant the army reached the battlefield, pressing forward amidst overwhelming gunfire, with streams of red iron traversing below the sleepers and charging towards the city walls.
Boom! Boom! Boom! In the stunned gaze of Xiayu, the spikes previously bent but never snapped under repetitive meddling by the sleepers were shattered and blown apart under the bombardment from the armored warriors. The surviving sleepers grabbed the broken spikes as weapons and hurled them towards the ramparts.
"Iron Wall!" Xiayu shouted, and as soon as the words fell, an ear-splitting metallic crash resonated, with the hurled spikes striking the iron wall summoned in mid-air by Xiayu, only to be absorbed back into his body amidst a series of sparks.
In the blink of an eye, the Red Armored Warrior Group had used this opportunity to reach the fortress walls. Upon entering this range, the Red Armored Warriors felt an intangible pressure suppressing them, not from Xiayu's gravitational crush but from an anti-air array set by the demon race warlocks. Within its influence, the restriction prevented anyone below the level of higher demon races from easily flying over the ramparts.
Despite this, the normally insurmountable walls in the eyes of ordinary people appeared to be like short fences to the armored warriors whose physical attributes far exceeded those of the normal world. Many armored warriors reached the walls, crouched, and leaped atop the ramparts within a few bounds.
There to welcome them was a row of spears and a uniform howl full of murderous intent.
"Kill!"
Upon the ramparts, the elite demon race veterans roared in unison. All the soldiers emitted demonic qi which converged into a whole, and with dragon-like force, they thrust their spears, their sharp tips crashing into the just-emerging enemy chests, flipping them down from the ramparts with a flick of their wrists.
The comrades falling like raindrops from the walls did not deter the armored warriors' resolve to attack. Even before the demon race soldiers could withdraw their spears, a second wave of armored warriors surged forth again.
"Duck!" Following the captain's orders, the demons along the walls crouched synchronously. Amid the creaking bowstrings, a barrage of sinister, gleaming crossbows pierced the night sky, abruptly striking the bodies of the armored warriors.
From afar, Pei Yan watched the battlefield change through the drone, squinting at the sight. In his view, Jiang Feiyang's artillery had significantly impacted the enslaved and sleeper opponents but was less effective against the armored warriors.
The fierce bombardment merely scattered the formation and caused some damage to these creatures with extraordinary defense and regeneration capabilities, failing to inflict severe casualties in short order, necessitating sustained bombardment to deplete their defense.
However, just now, the surprise volley of crossbow arrows under Kodwen's command so effortlessly pierced through the bodies of armored warriors, causing considerable loss. Shocked, Pei Yan zoomed in on the scene to closely examine the crossbow details, noticing intricate runes and patterns engraved on the crossbow and arrows. Unable to resist projecting the images before himself, he inquired of Samikina beside him: "Mr. Samikina, what material is this crossbow arrow made of? Why can it easily injure the Red Armored Warriors?"
Listening to the report from his subordinates, Samikina glanced casually at the light screen Pei Yan produced and said, "This crossbow device is called Demon Sheep's Horn, with runes imbued with death magic power to enhance the damage of the arrows. Moreover, these arrows were specifically crafted targeting their physical characteristics after engaging with the Disaster Legion."
Fearing a misunderstanding with Pei Yan, Samikina further added, "These crossbow arrows known as Demon Dragon Fang are made of materials not solely steel but mixed with numerous precious substances, including Demon Dragon Bone Powder, making their production very challenging. The arrow shafts are fragile and generally break after two rounds of shooting, which is why it was not mentioned. This time, Kodwen leads veterans to block the enemy, deserving special allocation."
