CHAPTER 52: CHAPTER 52: RAINES FAMILY GRUDGES (PART 1)
So, Felix Raines’s hopes for Sienna Thornton to bring him honor were dashed because those "worldly" villagers spread the rumor that "lawyers are bad people."
He was very angry, feeling that Sienna Thornton, the female doctor who returned from the United States, didn’t bring him any tangible benefits, and he took out his anger on Melinda Linton. This led to another big fight between Sienna and him.
Since Jared Raines wasn’t home, Felix Raines didn’t have an ally, and his frail self didn’t really dare to do anything to Sienna Thornton. After the big fight, he stormed out, cursing.
After Sienna Thornton finished wiping Melinda Linton’s body, she took the dirty clothes and sheets to the well to wash. Just as her hands hit the water, Jenna Raines came running over with a wooden basin, offering to help.
Sienna Thornton hadn’t hand-washed clothes in years, and was fretting over the large basin of dirty clothes and sheets, so she was more than happy when Jenna Raines volunteered to help.
As they washed, they started chatting. Sienna Thornton seized the chance to ask, "Why hasn’t the house been fixed over the years? Didn’t you all go out to earn money later on?"
Jenna Raines pointed to the two slightly newer-looking rooms next to the Raines family’s main house and said, "After you left, all the money we earned was used to build those two rooms. One for our second brother, and one for me... mine and yours."
Sienna Thornton glanced at Jenna Raines.
Those two rooms housing her? That would be the day!
She pressed her mocking smile into a tight line and suddenly remembered something. Uncertainly, she asked, "Were those two rooms built on village land?"
"Yes."
Sienna Thornton’s face quickly turned cold, and a long-buried sense of fear crawled from her limbs into her brain.
She dropped the clothes she was washing and asked Jenna Raines seriously, "Didn’t the village head say that I had to marry his son to get land from the village?"
Jenna Raines stammered, "I’m not sure about that; it was Dad who handled it."
"Did the village chief’s son get married?"
"No, he didn’t."
Sienna Thornton’s mind was ablaze with alarms. Forgetting the half-washed clothes in the basin, she immediately stood up and ran into the house.
Jenna Raines chased after her, "Sister, what’s wrong? The clothes are only half washed!"
Sienna Thornton quickly packed her suitcase, took off the delicate diamond necklace from under her turtleneck, and stuffed it into Jenna Raines’s hand, "Jenna, I need to leave. This necklace was bought in the United States, worth over ten thousand RMB. It’s a gift for you, but you need to do me a favor."
Jenna Raines nodded blankly.
Sienna Thornton whispered, "Help me find a car to take me back to Brimfield, as soon as possible! I’ll wait for you by the well!"
"Alright!" Jenna Raines took the necklace and ran out the door.
Sienna Thornton went inside to wake the still-sleeping Melinda Linton, hugged her, and softly said, "Mom, I’m going back to Brimfield first. I’ll come back later to take you for surgery. Don’t worry about the money; I have funds."
Melinda Linton asked nothing, struggling to get out of bed, she took out a few crumpled hundred-dollar bills hidden in the shoe padding of her muddy cloth shoes under the bed, tears streaming down as she thrust them into Sienna Thornton’s hands.
Sienna Thornton accepted the money without refusal, kissed Melinda Linton’s forehead, and left with her suitcase.
Melinda Linton was crying behind her, and Sienna Thornton’s face was also covered in tears, but she didn’t look back. She knew that if she didn’t leave now, she wouldn’t be able to.
Jenna Raines had been gone for a while and hadn’t returned. Sienna Thornton, holding her suitcase, went to wait by the well as agreed.
After waiting for a moment, she suddenly heard the rumbling approach of a three-wheeled motorcycle. Her heart sank. She was just about to dodge aside when she saw the Raines father and son running over wielding sticks.
Sienna Thornton, carrying her luggage and hindered by the cast on her foot, could only run a few steps before being caught by the two of them.
