Chapter 277: Shalltear POV
CHAPTER 277: CHAPTER 277: SHALLTEAR POV
Shalltear Bloodfallen
Shalltear lounged on the veranda of the Butterfly Mansion, her crimson eyes fixed on the faint hues of orange and pink brushing against the dark sky.
It was an uncharacteristically calm moment for the usually chaotic denizens of the mansion. Lupusregina Beta stood nearby, her sharp eyes scanning the surroundings, while Yuki sat on a stone step with a cup of tea in hand.
Despite the tranquil atmosphere, Shalltear was anything but relaxed. She pouted, her lips forming an exaggerated scowl as she tapped her fingers impatiently on the wooden railing.
"Honestly!" Shalltear huffed, crossing her arms with a flourish. "I can’t believe Alex-sama didn’t bring me along on the demon hunt. Does he not realize how valuable I am to him? How could he leave me behind like some... some afterthought?"
Lupusregina chuckled softly, her ever-present grin widening. "Maybe Alex-sama thought it’d be too easy if you were there, Shalltear-sama. You’d probably wipe out the demons before they even got a chance to scream."
"Hmph!" Shalltear spun on her heel, her silver hair catching the first glints of morning light. "That’s no excuse! I’m his most devoted servant! I should be at his side at all times—especially in a fight."
Looking at her now, with her cheeks puffed out and arms akimbo, one would never guess that this petite, doll-like girl was one of the most fearsome beings in existence. Instead, she looked like a young girl pouting because her boyfriend had gone on an adventure without her.
Lupusregina’s eyes sparkled with mischief. "Maybe Alex-sama thought you needed a break, Shalltear-sama. Or," she added with a teasing tone, "maybe he thought you’d get too distracted thinking about... other things."
Shalltear’s face flushed a deep crimson, and she stomped her foot. "That is entirely inappropriate, Lupus!"
Lupusregina didn’t back down, instead leaning lazily against a post and shrugging. "I’m just saying, it’s not like he doesn’t know how... passionate you are."
Yuki continued to sip her tea. She wasn’t one to involve herself in such conversations, as they can kill her if she said anything unnecessary.
Breaking the momentary silence, Lupusregina tilted her head toward the horizon. "The sun’s going to rise soon, Shalltear-sama. "
Shalltear blinked, her irritation momentarily replaced by confusion. "So?"
Lupusregina gestured toward the glowing line where the sun was just beginning to creep into view. "You know, the sunlight can harm you? Might be a good time to step inside, don’t you think?"
Shalltear scoffed, waving her hand dismissively. "Don’t be ridiculous, Lupus. The area is warded, and I am perfectly capable of—"
She stopped mid-sentence, her eyes narrowing as something caught her attention. A beam of light—no, a pillar—suddenly erupted in the distance, cutting through the sky like a divine blade. It towered into the heavens, illuminating the landscape in a brilliance that rivaled the coming sunrise.
The sheer intensity of the light made even Shalltear instinctively step back, her instincts screaming at her to recognize the power it represented.
Yuki stood abruptly. She set her tea down, her gaze fixed on the towering column of light. "What... what is that?"
Lupusregina’s grin faded, her sharp eyes locking onto the phenomenon. "That... that’s no ordinary magic."
Shalltear’s lips parted as she whispered, "Super-tier magic."
The words hung in the air like a weight, suffocating the tension among the trio. Super-tier magic wasn’t something that just anyone could wield. It was the pinnacle of magical power, a force so overwhelming that it could reshape the very fabric of reality.
Shalltear recognized it instantly—she had seen it before, wielded by none other than Alex-sama himself—when the humans attacked Nazarick. She and her Lord were the ones who defended Nazarick at that time.
Her crimson eyes widened, and for the first time since the conversation began, she was silent. The brilliance of the light was awe-inspiring, terrifying even, but there was no mistaking its source.
"It’s Alex-sama," she finally said, her voice soft but resolute. "That magic... it’s his."
Lupusregina let out a low whistle, crossing her arms. "Well, if he’s using something like that, things must’ve gotten real serious."
Shalltear’s fists clenched at her sides, frustration bubbling to the surface once more. "And I’m stuck here! If only I were by his side, I could—"
The pillar of light suddenly dissipated, plunging the landscape back into the muted tones of early morning. But the darkness that followed wasn’t natural—it was heavy, oppressive, like the calm before a storm.
Shalltear could feel it in her bones, an ominous weight pressing down on her. Whatever Alex-sama had done, it had shaken the balance of power in this world.
Lupusregina broke the silence with a serious look. "What are we going to do, Shalltear-sama?"
Shalltear didn’t respond immediately. Instead, she turned and marched toward the mansion, her determination etched into every step. "I refuse to sit idly by while Alex-sama faces such threats. Lupus, Yuki—prepare yourselves. We are going to him."
Lupusregina gave a mock salute, her grin returning. "As you command, Shalltear-sama. Though I’m pretty sure Alex-sama’s got it handled."
"Super-tier magic, huh?" she murmured to herself. "Guess Alex-sama’s pulling out all the stops."
