CHAPTER 64: A BLAZE FROM THE SKY, A FIRE IN HER HEART

Maribelle stands in the center of the arena, her new enchanted armor scorched, dented, and smeared with black hydra blood. Around her, five hydra corpses sizzle where they fell, their many heads twitching even in death. She pants once...then grins wide.

The crowd of demonkin that have gathered to watch the spectacle from above all gasp in awe, watching a mortal tear through monstrous foes like parchment.

High above, Vexena sits on her obsidian throne, long legs crossed, one crimson-nailed finger to her cheek. Eris stands to her right, arms crossed, her giant scythe floating silently behind her. Even she is impressed.

Maribelle glances up at them.

Without a word, she bolts across the arena, sprints up the stone wall, her boots crackling with energy. With a sudden leap, she clears the final edge and soars toward the queen’s podium.

Eris moves on instinct, her blade flashing forward.

But instead of attacking, Maribelle lands hard and drops to one knee before her.

"Thank you," she says breathlessly, "for this power."

Then she turns to Vexena and raises her head.

"I need more."

Eris’ eyes narrow. "You dare—"

Vexena raises a hand. Eris clamps her mouth shut.

"I’ve grown fond of you," Vexena says, her voice velvet wrapped in steel. "But you’re still a prisoner, Maribelle. An outsider. I gave you a speck of my power out of curiosity and boredom"

Maribelle’s eyes plead with her. "Please. Just a little more. I’ve never felt so... alive. So useful."

The queen taps her chin thoughtfully. Then, with a flicker of crimson light in her eyes, she offers a surprising deal.

"If you swear your life to me, pledge yourself fully and forever, I will give you the same strength I gave Eris. But you will no longer be Elthrean. You will live and serve at my side until your last breath. As a general in my court."

Eris gasps, Virelle squeals with joy.

Eris turns sharply. "My Queen, that’s—!"

Another raised hand silences her.

The air grows still.

Maribelle stands slowly. Her heart pounding. The raw offer crackles in the air like a lightning storm waiting to erupt.

A month ago, she might have said yes. A month ago, she was broken, adrift in existential pain.

But now?

Now she sees Pip’s gleaming smile every time she closes her eyes. She remembers Vuvi’s stubborn fire. Penelo’s joy. Veena’s surprising strength.

She breathes deeply and raises her head with quiet pride.

"No."

Vexena blinks.

Maribelle smiles gently. "A month ago, I might’ve accepted. But now? I believe in my daughter. And in Pip. They’re coming for me... I know they are. And when they do, I want to be me. Still me."

Vexena’s smirk returns. "Very well. Then that speck shall be your only taste."

"Then I’ll make it enough," Maribelle says, her eyes burning bright.

Back at the village of Hanreth Hollow...

"Go, Pip!" Penelo’s voice echoes from outside the barn.

Inside, the Golden One is a whirlwind of effort and affection, surrounded by a trio of naked women of varying races, each swooning under his meticulous touch. His plating shimmers gold beneath the barn’s high beams, humming softly with effort.

He mounts one, tickles another with water magic, while massaging the third with hands and thought-waves of pleasure.

Outside, Penelo peeks through the cracks in the barn door, eyes gleaming with stars.

Veena groans. "Penelo, again?"

"I’m just making sure he’s okay!" Penelo insists. "You know it takes a lot out of him... he needs support!"

Sera, lounging nearby with a towel over her shoulder, chuckles. "Support? You’re drooling, Bunny."

Penelo pouts.

Just then, a golden beam of divine light bursts from between the cracks of the barn, bathing Penelo’s face.

She blinks.

Then collapses to the ground in a blissful, mumbling heap, grinning up at the sky.

Veena rolls her eyes. "Told you so..."

Sera leaps over, catching Penelo before her head hits the dirt. "She okay?!"

"Default setting," Vuvi mutters, scribbling something in her notebook. "She’s still building the mental fortitude to handle the golden goods."

A sudden shriek rips through the village.

The three women turn at once.

Then all of them mutter in unison:

"Dragon."

From inside the barn, Pip pokes his head out, eyes wide and beeping in alarm. But before he could do anything more, giggling hands yanks him back inside.

The trio of women outside stand at attention.

Sera unsheathes her sword. Vuvi lifts her Boombuster. Veena’s fists light up with a violet glow.

From over the distant hilltops, a massive shadow crests, wings spread wide. The wind howls. Flames flickering between massive jaws.

"She’s huge," Veena whispers.

"Definitely not here to cuddle," Sera adds.

The dragon shrieks again and begins its descent.

Just as the trio tensed—

SLAP!

All three women are struck upside the head by crooked wooden ladles.

The old village chieftess stands behind them, hunched, cross, and scowling.

"PUT. THAT. AWAY!" she barks.

The three rub their heads, sheepishly.

"But she’s charging straight at us!" Vuvi protestes.

"No slaying!" the old woman snaps. "Help her! Help her understand!"

All three blinks.

The chieftess points up at the dragon, who had begun rolling mid-air and flapping awkwardly in place.

"She doesn’t know what she’s doing... look at her!"

Ka’Lula suddenly dive... then pauses mid-air to sniff a tree and purr at a cloud. She then crashes into a flower bed, rolling around while laughing through roars and snorting out puffs of smoke.

"Of course," Veena says slowly.

"Apologies." Sera bows. "Force of habit."

"Poor thing," Penelo sighs, watching as the dragon rubs its tail against a giant tree. "First heat cycle. Poor dear doesn’t even know what’s happening to her."

-----------------

Later that evening...

Pip finally stumbles from the barn, steam rising off his joints, heart-light flickering gently.

Vuvi slaps him on the back. "Another successful day. The world’s never been so satisfied."

Pip beams a thoughtwave of gratitude and purpose. Penelo, still woozy, throws her arms around him in a sleepy hug.

As they walk back toward the inn for rest, the dragon’s roar echoes again. Closer this time.

They turn and see Ka’Lula, now in her half-dragonkin form, sitting beside the village well. Her hair tangled mess, her wings twitching. She clutches a bundle of golden nuggets and broken ancient artifacts.

She sees them.

And runs.
