CHAPTER 102: CHAPTER 102 REMEMBER THAT DAY (4)_1
"How’s business?" Rachel Bailey picked a few apples and asked the middle-aged man to weigh them.
"I make enough for a meal, but can’t earn the big bucks," the middle-aged man smiled and told Rachel Bailey the total was twelve yuan.
Rachel Bailey gave him twenty yuan, and he gave her eight yuan in change. Then he mounted his bicycle again, slowing down as he continued towards other more secluded or older streets.
Watching the man’s retreating figure, Rachel Bailey decided to give it a try herself.
However, she didn’t plan on selling fruits. If the fruits didn’t sell, they would rot over time. She decided to wholesale some clothes, which wouldn’t spoil if not sold for a while.
Thinking this, Rachel Bailey immediately turned her bicycle around and headed back to the Emerald Garden Building, not bothering to scout the market but instead searching online for a clothing wholesaler.
The variety of clothes online dazzled her, and she was unsure which ones to stock up on.
After looking for a while, she calmed her mind and thought carefully. These days, it’s the girls who love to shop for clothes, so stocking up on women’s apparel would likely yield good sales. Men, not fond of haggling, would buy less, so I’ll have to moderate the stock for them. Children’s clothes, though, are the easiest to sell. With so many only children, parents will skimp on themselves but ensure their kids eat the best and wear the best.
During the days she surveyed the market, Rachel Bailey noticed this trend: anything sold for children always did well.
Thus, she decided to stock up on children’s clothing as well.
And for the elderly, who prefer to be thrifty and feel that any clothing will do, Rachel Bailey found that the wholesale price of the clothes she was considering ranged from ten to twenty yuan each. She could resell them for thirty to forty yuan each, which suited the frugal mindset of many seniors.
After analyzing the market needs, Rachel Bailey began contacting clothing wholesalers.
「Two days later.」
Rachel Bailey was riding an electric tricycle that was neither new nor old, laden with clothes for men, women, the old, and children, weaving through the streets and alleys.
She was one to act upon her thoughts immediately.
She first went to a second-hand shop and bought an electric tricycle that was neither new nor old. There were human-powered tricycles available, but I thought they would be quite exhausting to ride, especially if I needed to make a quick escape when city enforcement showed up.
Today she began her "guerilla" business.
She was a standout in the Accounting Industry, a young woman unwilling to be used by others as a stepping stone. Possessing her own pride, she didn’t wish to borrow money from her wealthy female friends or ladies from reputable families. Thus, she embarked on a new journey in her life.
However, she forgot that she was still a hotly debated figure.
"Miss Lin, what are you doing?" Those who were still pestering her, wanting her to work for their companies, were shocked when they saw her, their eyes bulging in disbelief at the sight.
Any one of those companies would offer Rachel Bailey a salary of several thousand yuan a month, including board and lodging, placing her in the white-collar bracket.
Yet, Rachel Bailey disdained this, preferring to sell clothes from the very tricycle they found repugnant. At a glance, the clothes were of the quality they’d use as rags, costing around twenty or thirty yuan each. How could they not be shocked?
At the same time, they wondered how the Valence Group got involved with such a low-level character.
"Selling clothes," Rachel Bailey stated, parking her tricycle on a street corner as a customer had appeared.
"Miss Lin, working for our company would be much better than selling clothes. We can offer you a monthly salary of ten thousand yuan," a female Chief Financial Officer (CFO) from one company said, stopping her black sedan, valued at over a hundred thousand yuan, next to Rachel Bailey’s tricycle. She stepped out, stood in front of Rachel Bailey, and tempted her with the offer.
She absentmindedly flipped through Rachel Bailey’s clothes, frowning as she spoke, "Who would wear these clothes? These are just street stall goods, twenty or thirty yuan a piece."
"What’s wrong with twenty or thirty yuan street stall goods? Will they kill you if you wear them? If you’re not buying, then step aside and don’t block my business," Rachel Bailey immediately swatted away the CFO’s disdainful hand, frowning and speaking irritably.
The few people who wanted to buy clothes also turned and rolled their eyes at the CFO after hearing her words. Ha! In these times, there were plenty of people who resented the wealthy. The CFO’s attitude of looking down on the poor certainly didn’t help. It was no wonder she received such glares.
"Miss Lin, if you’re willing to work for our company, I’ll buy all these clothes from you," the persistent CFO stood by Rachel Bailey, continuing to tempt her.
"Sorry, my clothes are only sold to those who like wearing them, not to those who despise them," Rachel Bailey ignored her completely.
The customers who were picking clothes had also made their selections. Rachel Bailey quickly, with a smile, got some bags to help them pack the clothes. She charged only thirty yuan per piece, and in no time, as four people found what they wanted, she made one hundred and twenty yuan.
As the customers handed her the money, she took it and quickly opened her waist bag to give change. I’m so thankful I bought this waist bag back then, saving me from needing to buy a new one now. Hehe, it seems I did have foresight after all.
Out of the blue, a white city enforcement patrol vehicle stopped in front of Rachel Bailey’s stall.
Four men dressed in city enforcement uniforms got out of the vehicle. It was Rachel Bailey’s first day doing her "guerilla" business. She had just made a few sales and was happily making change for a customer when she glanced up. Not yet registering what was happening, she continued with her task. By the time her customers, seeing the enforcers, quickly told her, "The city enforcement is here!"
Rachel Bailey panicked and finally came to her senses.
But it was too late.
The city enforcement officers wanted to take away her tricycle and the clothes she had for sale. Rachel Bailey pleaded desperately as the officers remained stoic, insisting on enforcing the law. She clung to her tricycle, refusing to let them push it away.
These clothes had cost her several thousand yuan. It was just her first day of business, and she couldn’t let the city enforcement take away her merchandise worth thousands of yuan.
The struggle was contentious and noisy.
The CFO stood aside, watching, but not helping Rachel Bailey.
