Prosperous Marriage: Married to My Brother-in-law
Chapter 176 - 176 Almost Forcefully Kissed (2)_1
"What would you like to eat? I'll go buy it for you right away," Orlando Evans responded immediately, her expression one of great concern and thoughtfulness for Adele Horne. In Julia Bluen's eyes, Orlando was merely trying to curry favor.
"I want to eat..." Adele began.
"Bring her back a bowl of plain lean meat congee, and tell the shop not to add any MSG," Julia Bluen interjected, answering Orlando on Adele Horne's behalf.
"I don't want congee! Julia Bluen, are you taking advantage of my brother and parents' absence to mistreat me?" Adele Horne cried out indignantly. Her fever had started to subside, and her head wasn't as foggy anymore; her demanding personality resurfaced instantly.
"You have a cold, so you need to eat something light," Julia said. "Miss Evans, please. You're Adele's good friend. I'm sure you know that someone with a cold should eat bland food. In Adele's current condition, some light congee would be best. Why don't you try to persuade her?" Julia subtly passed the buck to Orlando Evans, leaving it to her to convince Adele Horne. If Orlando truly considered Adele a good friend, she would know that everything I'm saying is true. If Orlando is just using Adele as a pawn, she'll go along with whatever Adele wants. Little sister-in-law, we'll soon see if your 'good friend' is genuine or not by how she answers.
Julia Bluen's almond eyes fixed intently on Orlando, her gaze seemingly beseeching, which made Orlando feel a surge of smugness. So what if you married into the Horne family? Orlando sneered internally. Did you think the Hornes would be that easy to get along with? If you can't handle the relationship with your sister-in-law, it'll just create conflict between you and your husband.
"Adele is the patient. Keeping her happy and in good spirits will help her recover faster," Orlando's answer was a huge letdown for Julia Bluen. All those years of friendship, truly all for show! She genuinely felt her little sister-in-law had been wronged.
Julia had seen Adele Horne and Orlando Evans together often. Over the years, Adele had spent several million on Orlando. Adele spent money like water, buying Orlando expensive designer clothes and jewelry, often spending tens of thousands at a time. Without Adele Horne, could Orlando afford to be as glamorous and decked out in jewels as she was now?
"Exactly! Orlando treats me best. Orlando, go to the Emperor hotel and get me something to eat. Only you know what I like best," Adele Horne ordered Orlando, her tone exactly like that of a queen addressing a servant, not a friend speaking to a friend.
Julia Bluen stood near Orlando, her almond eyes locked on her, unwilling to miss a single expression on Orlando's face. After Adele finished her command, a flicker of displeasure crossed Orlando's face, but it vanished so quickly that someone as unobservant as Adele wouldn't have caught it.
"Alright, you wait here. I'll go get you something to eat," Orlando agreed with an exceptionally gentle and considerate tone.
Though Orlando verbally agreed, she remained seated. She waited for Adele Horne to give her money, as she rarely carried much cash herself—usually only one or two hundred yuan—being accustomed to spending Adele's money. Besides, the dishes Adele favored from the Emperor hotel were all signature items that could easily cost several thousand yuan. Orlando couldn't afford to pay for Adele's meal right then, which was why she was staring so expectantly at her.
"Adele, going to the Emperor hotel will cost quite a bit," Orlando Evans said, smiling as she prompted the still-clueless Adele Horne. A flicker of greed crossed her coquettish eyes. She knew Adele Horne's bank card had no spending limit; even Adele herself wasn't sure how much was in it. It was essentially unrestricted. Since Adele rarely carried much cash, wanting food from the Emperor hotel now would be expensive. Adele would have to give her the bank card and PIN to pay, and that would be her chance to skim a nice sum. Orlando Evans was quite confident that, given Adele Horne's trust in her, Adele would definitely give her the bank card and PIN.
Listening, Julia Bluen scoffed internally, a faint sneer playing on her lips.
Adele Horne usually paid by card and rarely carried much cash; what little she had on her wouldn't even cover a single meal at the Emperor hotel. She did have her card with her, but she wasn't stupid enough to give it and the PIN to Orlando Evans. She knew her bank card was unrestricted, with no spending limit. If she gave Orlando the PIN, who knew if Orlando would seize the chance to withdraw a large sum? Even though the Evans Family was also wealthy, human greed knew no bounds.
"Miss Evans, why don't you stay here with Adele? When her IV drip finishes, you can ask a Nurse to change it for her. She's supposed to have two bags in total. As for what Adele wants to eat, I'll go get it. I think Adele would prefer you to stay and keep her company," Julia Bluen cut in at the perfect moment. Her words resolved Adele Horne's indecision and thwarted Orlando Evans's plan to pocket some cash.
Adele Horne looked at Julia Bluen, whose expression was unreadable. But hearing Julia's words, it did resolve her hesitation. So, for once, she found herself agreeing with Julia Bluen and said to Orlando Evans, "She's right. Orlando, you stay here with me, or I'll die of boredom. I can't find a single thing to talk about with a certain someone."
A flash of hatred for Julia Bluen once again crossed Orlando Evans's eyes. Julia was proving to be far more difficult to handle than she had imagined. It looked like she needed to get Adele Horne to act against Julia Bluen quickly. Otherwise, if their sister-in-law relationship improved, it would be a huge disadvantage for her.
Adele Horne caught a glimpse of the hatred in Orlando Evans's eyes for a second, but when she blinked, Orlando was her usual gentle and virtuous self again, her face full of care and consideration for her. Adele figured she must have been mistaken. How could there be hatred in Orlando's eyes? Even if Orlando was upset that Julia had married her elder brother, she would only feel jealous of Julia, not hatred.
Having thought it through, Adele Horne dismissed the fleeting hatred she'd glimpsed in Orlando's eyes.
"I'm warning you, I absolutely will not eat congee! I only eat food from the Emperor hotel!" Adele Horne snapped at Julia Bluen, her face stern and her tone exceedingly harsh.
Julia Bluen ignored her and turned to leave.
Orlando Evans maintained the smile on her face. After Adele Horne agreed to let Julia Bluen get her food, Orlando put on an even greater display of magnanimity and thoughtfulness, her affection and concern for Adele Horne appearing all the more profound.
