Prosperous Marriage: Married to My Brother-in-law
Chapter 448 447: Bowl of Softshell Turtle Soup (4)_1
The one who was worried was naturally Adele Horne.
However, the old lady was indeed much more open-minded compared to Mila Anderson. After stating her position, she wholeheartedly supported Adele Horne's decision, feeling that her stubborn granddaughter had finally come to her senses, even though it took a harsh lesson to get there.
Mila Anderson had also gone out in the afternoon; it was unclear where she had gone. She didn't return until nearly dusk, carrying a large turtle with her.
Upon her return, she paid little attention to anyone, heading straight for the kitchen and ordering all the servants out. Seeing she was in a foul mood, the servants quickly made themselves scarce.
Only after the servants had been sent out of the kitchen did Mila Anderson begin to personally stew the turtle soup.
Everyone was clueless as to whom she was making the turtle soup for.
As dusk began to settle and the sky darkened, Mila Anderson personally carried a bowl of turtle soup out of the kitchen and headed upstairs.
She approached her daughter Adele Horne's room with the soup, then freed one hand to knock on the door, calling out, "Adele, are you there? Mom has made some nourishing soup for you. Open the door and drink it while it's hot; I've brought it up for you."
Mila Anderson's voice was very gentle and loving, making it seem as though she was a very good and caring mother.
Turtle soup is a nutritious broth, a fact known to many. However, turtle is not suitable for pregnant women to consume because it can induce miscarriage.
Mila Anderson, having experienced much in life and being a lady accustomed to exotic delicacies, naturally understood the effects of various soups. She knew that turtle was unsuitable for pregnant women and could lead to miscarriage. Despite this, she hardened her heart, bought a turtle, and stewed it with its shell—because the shell possessed the strongest abortifacient properties.
Her trip that afternoon had been solely for the turtle.
In fact, the torment in her heart was why she had returned so late.
But every time she thought of the suffering unwed mothers endured and how young her daughter still was, she wished for Adele to marry a good man and live a happy life, free from judgment. Thus, she could only steel her resolve and resort to other means to terminate her daughter's pregnancy. It just so happened that her son and daughter-in-law were not at home, so there was no one to stop her, and Adele didn't know that turtle soup was unsuitable for pregnant women. Even if Adele found out and blamed her, she was willing to accept it. She felt that as a mother, she was completely focused on her child's future. Even if Adele would resent and blame her, it would only be temporary. One day, Adele would understand her painstaking efforts and realize that her actions had been right.
When Adele, in her room, heard the knocking and her mother's voice saying she had personally brought the soup, her heart instantly warmed. She felt that although her mother was angry, furious even, and didn't approve of her decision, she still cared for her and the child in her womb.
Hastily sitting up from the bed, she slipped into her slippers and quickly went to open the door. Seeing Mila Anderson truly holding a steaming bowl of turtle soup, she was moved with gratitude as she took the bowl and said to Mila, "Mom, I could have gone downstairs to drink this; you didn't have to bring it up. It's hot, be careful not to burn your hand."
Mila Anderson's gentle expression froze slightly. Listening to her daughter's concerned words, her heart was once again torn.
Adele sniffed the turtle soup, then smiled sweetly at Mila, saying, "Thanks, Mom. This soup must taste good; it already smells amazing. I'm thinking, once Julia has her baby, your soup-making skills will be legendary."
Holding the soup, she stepped aside to let Mila into her room, then turned to go back in. The mother and daughter sat down on the sofa in the outer room.
Adele, eager to taste the soup, immediately scooped up a mouthful. She found it delicious, though still very hot. So, she placed the bowl back on the coffee table and said, "Mom, this soup is still so hot; let's let it cool down a bit. Oh, by the way, how much of this soup did you make? Did you leave some for Julia?"
Seeing her daughter take a mouthful, Mila was extremely nervous. However, she felt an inexplicable wave of relief when the bowl was placed back on the coffee table. Hearing her daughter's question, she steeled herself and responded with a smile, "Julia doesn't like turtle, so I wouldn't dare make this kind of soup for her. Besides, she's having severe morning sickness and throws up everything. The turtle meat itself has a bit of a distinct smell, and she'd probably vomit just from that. So, there's only this one bowl, and it's all for you."
One could only imagine how concentrated the essence was, with a large turtle stewed down into a single bowl of soup.
Generally, a small amount of turtle soup, perhaps a mouthful or two, would not cause a miscarriage in pregnant women. However, finishing this entire bowl would certainly induce one. Moreover, with the essence so intensely concentrated, if Adele were to drink all of it, not even a deity descending from heaven could save the child in her womb.
