CHAPTER 595: CHAPTER 584: THE DIVINE DOCTOR FATHER OF THE WEALTHY DAUGHTER-IN-LAW

Ye Chan adapted to her new job very quickly; those who had criticisms dared not voice them in front of her. Once everyone recognized her abilities, the rumors and gossip about her vanished into thin air. The only thing that troubled her was the temporary interview about Li Pengcheng and his wife Gao Juan—that day’s events had spread, and people were still speculating about whether her father was truly a gambler or not.

"I’ve said it’s not true, but they still don’t believe it," Ye Chan vented to her good friend Gu Mingmei.

"If they don’t believe it, let them be. Eventually, they’ll come to know the truth. If a man like Uncle Ye was really a gambler, then there’d be no good people left in the world," sighed Gu Mingmei.

The first time Gu Mingmei met Ye Chan’s father was the previous weekend. Mr. Ye had said it was rare for his daughter to make a good friend and insisted on inviting her over for a visit to cook a delicious meal. Gu Mingmei couldn’t turn down the invitation, so she went.

She still remembered the scene from their first meeting and what Mr. Ye looked like in his pale blue robe. If he had been holding a folded fan instead of a spatula, he would have looked just like a scholar—or rather, a well-read teacher or steward—straight out of a book. She swore she had never seen anyone with such a scholarly air in any movie—no, it couldn’t just be described as scholarly, it was more like an educated scholar or a steward.

How could such a refined, talented man possibly be a gambler? Gu Mingmei absolutely refused to believe it.

And as it turned out, Ye Chan’s father was not a gambler at all, but a highly respected traditional Chinese medicine doctor who could tell at first glance that she suffered from insomnia.

This insomnia was an old problem for her family; not only sleeplessness but sometimes sleep talking or sleepwalking too. Due to some family secrets, no one outside of their family doctor knew about these issues. To her surprise, Mr. Ye had diagnosed her immediately.

Not only had he made the diagnosis, but he also prescribed a few herbal remedies for her to drink regularly. Miraculously, she had a good night’s sleep the very day she took the medicine, with no sleepwalking or nightmares, waking up refreshed in the morning.

Later, she had even wondered if the medicine contained any sleep-inducing drugs, but after getting it checked out, she found that although two of the ingredients did have sedative properties, they were absolutely harmless to the body. After drinking it for a week, she even felt lighter overall.

So, whenever someone slandered Mr. Ye, Gu Mingmei would never agree with them—that was a man like an immortal, okay?

"Ye Chan, aren’t you off work tomorrow? Can I come over and visit your dad?" Gu Mingmei reminisced about the soup she had the previous week and couldn’t help swallowing her saliva.

"I think you’re just missing the soup my dad cooked!" teased Ye Chan.

Not embarrassed at all, Gu Mingmei retorted, "Yes, yes, Ye Chan, someone like you who gets to drink the immortal soup your father makes every day can’t understand the feelings of those of us who can only eat meals made by a housekeeper."

"Then come over. Isn’t Xiao Hao home alone all the time? Bring him along too. I really don’t understand how your family does it, raising such a cute and lovely child in that manner," Ye Chan said, shaking her head and sighing.

Gu Mingmei shrugged her shoulders: "Then you should blame his father and mother; they’re the ones who created the issue."

The next day, as agreed, Gu Mingmei and Xiao Hao arrived at Ye Chan’s home, where they were greeted by an enticing fragrance that rumbled their stomachs.

"Uncle Ye, if you were to open a restaurant, I’d definitely be a regular customer every day," Gu Mingmei said without any shame as she flattered him.

Mr. Ye was indeed very pleased: "If you like it, then come more often. There are only Chanchan and me at home; it’s nice to have some company."

"Then we have a deal, and Uncle Ye, you can’t get tired of me," Gu Mingmei said.

"Of course not, of course not. Dinner isn’t ready yet. This is some cake I made early in the morning. Children can’t go hungry, have some to tide you over," Mr. Ye said as he took out a pastry made with Chinese medicinal herbs. Although it smelled of herbs, the scent was strangely appealing, and it tasted unexpectedly sweet.

Gu Hao’s eyes widened as he ate, looking at Ye Qiu with great curiosity, as if he wanted to ask how he made the dish.

"If it tastes good, eat more," Ye Qiu said, rubbing Gu Hao’s head with a look of affection.

Gu Hao didn’t shy away or dodge; he even comfortably squinted his eyes. Gu Mingmei revealed a look of surprise. She knew this young boy; when she first approached him, it took two days for him to accept her. She didn’t expect that the first to get close to Gu Hao was Ye Chan, and the second was Uncle Ye, both of whom became endeared to the boy.

"Alright, take your time eating, I have an appointment with two patients, I’m heading to the clinic first," Ye Qiu said as he put down his chopsticks.

Gu Mingmei quickly stopped him: "Uncle, can we come and have a look later?"

"Of course, you can. Once you’re ready, have Ye Chan bring you over."

As Gu Mingmei watched Ye Qiu walk away, she was still a bit dazed, sighing, "If Uncle were twenty years younger, no, even just ten years, I would definitely pursue him."

"Come on, you can’t be serious with that joke," Ye Chan knocked on her head.

"I am so envious of you, not only is your dad handsome, but he also has such great medical skills and cooking abilities!"

"Is your dad really that bad? You’re so pretty, so Uncle must also be a handsome guy, and a money-making one at that!"

"Hehe, that’s true."

While Ye Chan’s side was merry, Li Xinyi’s feelings had hit a snag, all because ever since that day, she had been subtly complaining about Ye Chan in front of her Brother Ming Shen.

"Brother Ming Shen, how could your elder brother hire Ye Chan as the general manager, and with such a high salary, too? He couldn’t have been deceived, could he?" Li Xinyi asked doubtfully.

Gu Mingshen was a bit helpless: "Xinyi, the pharmaceutical company is under my elder brother’s management; he has his reasons for the decisions he makes."

"But I just can’t stand people like Ye Chan. She’s received so much preferential treatment from our family and still isn’t satisfied. When she married my elder brother, she had nothing, and now she says she wants a divorce as if it’s nothing. I really feel it’s so unfair for my elder brother," Li Xinyi said huffily, her words may be inappropriate, but she still looked pretty and cute.

"Xinyi," Gu Mingshen spoke with a hint of helplessness, "whether it’s getting married or divorced, it’s a decision between your elder brother and her. You’re still young, you don’t quite understand these things. They’re adults; matters of marriage are not about being worthy or not."

"But my elder brother drowns his sorrows in alcohol every day, whereas she’s all carefree finding another job, looking so bright and shiny all the time, it just irks me!"

"If I’m not mistaken, wasn’t it your elder brother who cheated first?" Gu Mingshen maintained his good temper.

"But my elder brother realized his mistake and apologized!" Li Xinyi argued vehemently.

"Has the other woman been sent away? Has the child in her womb been aborted?"

Li Xinyi hesitated for a moment: "Although she hasn’t been sent away yet, my parents and elder brother said that once the child is born, they will sever ties completely."
