CHAPTER 844: CHAPTER 755: DISLOCATED LIVES 43
Wen Shuangshuang was drinking juice when Wen Zhijin, acting particularly friendly, got up and moved to sit not far from Shuangshuang. She said, "Shuangshuang, my foot hurts and I don’t want to move. Could you help me get a glass of juice?"
Shuangshuang frowned slightly, said nothing, and simply waved. A waiter carrying a tray of drinks came over. Shuangshuang signaled for the waiter to go over to where Wen Zhijin was, "This beautiful lady is thirsty, please get her a glass of juice."
The waiter immediately displayed several types of juice from the tray for Wen Zhijin to see and asked her which one she would like. Wen Zhijin, noticing that Shuangshuang didn’t even lift a hand, bit her lip in frustration and unhappily took a glass of grapefruit juice.
After taking two sips of the grapefruit juice, Wen Zhijin stood up again, carrying the juice over to Shuangshuang, casually trying to place it beside the juice glass on the coffee table near Shuangshuang, all the while appearing as if she wanted to talk to her.
Unfortunately, Shuangshuang didn’t engage with her at all. Before Zhijin could set down the juice, when she was still an arm’s length away, Shuangshuang had already stood up and walked away with her juice.
Zhijin was so irritated by Shuangshuang’s disdainful action that she gritted her teeth. Originally, she had laid out an elaborate scheme, but hit a snag at the first obstacle. Shuangshuang just wouldn’t take the bait. Frustrated, she had no choice but to abandon the first plan and move on to the second.
Shuangshuang knew that Zhijin was persistently approaching her with bad intentions. After all, Zhijin’s behavior was too obvious. Anyone would find it odd for a person they despised to suddenly want to cozy up for a chat.
Shuangshuang wasn’t afraid of Zhijin’s plots against her as she had many ways to retaliate. However, she didn’t want to cause a scene here. There were too many people; if something embarrassing happened, whether she or Zhijin lost face, the ones most upset would ultimately be Wen Jianyun and Liu Yun.
In such a place, any embarrassment would be remembered by these people forever, making it impossible for the embarrassed party, or Wen Jianyun, who did not educate his child well, to lift their heads again. The couple, Liu Yun and Jianyun, would be mocked wherever they went in the future for not raising their child well, as if it weren’t clear that Zhijin wasn’t taught directly by them.
After leaving Zhijin, Shuangshuang was surrounded by others again. She could only cope with them while holding her juice. Being a CEO was no easy task, and dealing with these people and their attempts to build connections was exhausting for Shuangshuang — and for them too.
All of them were significant figures, speaking kind words to someone younger for the sake of their company’s future. The CEOs certainly didn’t feel comfortable doing so.
Especially since surrounding Shuangshuang for ages might only result in a few exchanged words. The CEOs racked their brains, hoping to pique the already impatient Shuangshuang’s interest within those limited words, which wasn’t an easy task.
As Shuangshuang’s mood grew irritable, she suddenly sensed something amiss behind her. Her martial arts training had heightened her sensitivity, and upon turning her head, she saw Zhijin staggering towards her with a glass of juice.
Shuangshuang’s immediate reaction was to quickly step back, creating distance between herself and Zhijin. Knowing that today, Zhijin was determined to make trouble for her, she naturally wouldn’t give her the opportunity to get close and cause trouble.
Even though Shuangshuang had been on guard, she was still one step slow. Although Zhijin didn’t manage to fall onto her, the juice in the glass splashed all over the hem of Shuangshuang’s dress.
Shuangshuang’s face instantly darkened. She had seen clearly that as Zhijin realized she wouldn’t reach her, she deliberately splashed the juice in her hand.
Zhijin, seeing the juice on Shuangshuang’s dress hem, briefly flashed a look of satisfaction. Then she quickly moved in, wearing a worried expression, and said to Shuangshuang, "Oh dear, I’ve dirtied your dress. What should we do about this? It’s all because of my clumsiness. Let’s go to the lounge, and I’ll help you clean your dress."
Shuangshuang took a deep breath, suppressing her anger, and pushed away the concerned-looking Zhijin. She called over a waiter, "Could you bring me a clothes dry-cleaning agent and a wet towel, please? Thank you."
At an event, especially one with food, it’s inevitable that clothes will occasionally get dirty. If a dress gets soiled, it’s unpresentable, so the hosts usually have a solution ready.
They have spare clothes for men and women, washrooms, lounges, and for small stains, dry-cleaning agents to quickly clean and maintain one’s image. Whether the agent damages expensive clothing is secondary to maintaining appearances.
Seeing that the waiter had brought the dry-cleaning agent over, Zhijin, in a panic, grabbed Shuangshuang’s hand and tried to pull her into a nearby lounge, urgently saying, "Look how big the stain is on your dress. It would be inconvenient for you to handle it yourself. Let’s go to the lounge, and I’ll help you."
The surrounding onlookers, unaware of Zhijin’s intentions, also persuaded Shuangshuang to go to the lounge with Zhijin to deal with the stain, as it indeed covered a large area of the dress.
Shuangshuang felt somewhat angry as well. She had originally not wanted to make a scene with Zhijin in this setting, knowing how it would hurt Wen Jianyun and Liu Yun, but Zhijin seemed set on embarrassing her here today.
If Zhijin insisted on courting trouble, Shuangshuang wouldn’t hold back. She didn’t refuse anymore but instead followed Zhijin to the lounge. Once inside, Zhijin didn’t act as warmly, simply using the dry-cleaning agent to clean Shuangshuang’s dress before leaving.
When Zhijin exited, she hung her head low and instantly covered her face with her hands as she hurriedly left. Shuangshuang remained in the lounge, using a wet towel to continue wiping off the remaining dry-cleaning agent from her dress hem.
After handling her clothes, Shuangshuang didn’t leave immediately. Instead, she picked up a tablet meant for guests to while away the time, casually operated it for a bit, and after enjoying a good show, leisurely got up to leave the lounge to look for Wen Jianyun and Liu Yun.
Wen Jianyun and Liu Yun were socializing with other company CEOs in the reception hall, aiming to build good relationships. More connections mean more paths; even if business isn’t immediately possible, having a rapport can provide an edge in future opportunities.
