CHAPTER 624: CHAPTER 541: SMART KID

"I’m sorry, Mom!" Zhang Shan bit her lip and apologized. In this household, she had no more say.

"Hmph!" Her mother-in-law turned and went upstairs. The more she looked at this daughter-in-law, the less she liked her.

Mo Mo was a sensible little beauty. When she saw her mom, her small face instantly lit up.

Zhang Shan took her daughter from the nanny’s arms, feeling a pang of bitterness in her heart.

At that moment, the doorbell rang. The nanny went over, and upon learning that it was someone from the Public Security Bureau, she nervously asked Zhang Shan, "Madam! There are people from the Public Security Bureau outside saying they need to speak with you about something!"

Zhang Shan’s face changed dramatically. The Public Security Bureau?

Could it be that matter had been discovered?

She instinctively hugged Mo Mo tighter and forced herself to calm down. "Just tell them I’m not home!"

The nanny hesitantly conveyed this, but the person outside directly stated that they knew Zhang Shan was home.

In the end, Zhang Shan understood she could only evade for now but couldn’t hide forever.

Two young men from the Public Security Bureau came in and plainly said they needed her to come with them to assist in the investigation of a case.

Zhang Shan’s mother-in-law heard the commotion upstairs and hurried down to see the Public Security Bureau taking Zhang Shan away. She was beside herself with panic.

She anxiously asked, "Officers, what crime did my daughter-in-law commit that she has to be taken away?"

"To assist in the investigation of a case!" A tall officer replied in a formal tone.

Zhang Shan knew there was no point in resisting, so she chose to calmly think of a countermeasure.

She handed the child to her mother-in-law and followed the two officers out.

Her mother-in-law was scared out of her wits and it took her a good while to recover enough to think of calling her son.

This didn’t seem like a good sign!

If it were just for assisting in the investigation, why would someone come directly to the house with such an icy attitude to take her away?

When Leng Mochen got home, Li Si finally learned that Zhang Shan had been taken away from her house.

Neither of them wanted to bring her up.

The next day, Li Si went to visit Su Meng, who had gone directly to her mother’s house after hosting the baby’s full-month banquet. Li Si hadn’t had the chance to visit her until now.

She carried a gift with her, and when she arrived, Mrs. Su opened the door with a beaming smile.

Mrs. Su’s house was a relocated apartment with a straightforward layout of two bedrooms and good lighting.

Su Meng and her baby stayed in the southern room. When Li Si arrived, she happened to catch the baby just waking up and nursing.

"Sisi! You didn’t have to bring anything!"

"It’s nothing expensive, just some things for the baby! Auntie! Didn’t Meng Meng already buy plenty for my son?"

Mrs. Su smiled as she took the gift and placed it on the shoe cabinet, warmly fetching slippers for Li Si to change into.

Li Si slipped on the slippers and hurried towards the southern room with the open door. Su Meng looked up and smiled at Li Si, "What brings you here today?"

She clearly knew Li Si had been very busy recently.

"I missed you guys! Time is like water in a sponge; you can always squeeze some out!"

Li Si noted that Su Meng looked well, dressed in comfortable loungewear, and nursing the baby with practiced ease.

"This little rascal! Growing so fast! I feel like they’re already bigger than they were at the full-month banquet!"

Su Meng laughed warmly, "Babies grow quickly! I felt the same way about Buding—every time I didn’t see him for a little while, it seemed as though he grew up so much in that short time!"

Peanut sucked on the milk with great determination, occasionally glancing at Li Si as he listened to his mom talk.

At that moment, Mrs. Su brought Li Si a glass of iced watermelon juice, "Sisi! Have some to cool down!"

"Thank you, Auntie!" Li Si took a sip and placed it on the bedside table.

"You two can chat! Once the baby finishes eating, I’ll take him to the living room!" Mrs. Su wanted her daughter to have more time to chat with her friend, lest she kept everything bottled up.

"Alright, Mom. I think he’s almost done! Look at him starting to pay attention to everything around him!" Su Meng gently stroked Peanut’s ear.

"Really! This kid acts like a little grown-up! Sisi, you wouldn’t believe it, when we chat he sits there listening as if he understands everything!" Mrs. Su said animatedly.

She acted as though her grandson’s every move was worthy of bragging rights.

Li Si said in surprise, "Then he really is like a little grown-up! My Buding wasn’t like that at just over a month old—I remember he slept a lot more back then!"

Peanut finished nursing and Mrs. Su picked him up, holding him upright to gently pat his back.

His eyes were a perfect size, but his pupils were large with little sclera, making his eyes appear exceptionally dark.

Peanut turned his small head toward Li Si’s direction when she spoke.

Li Si felt there was something very peculiar about the way the child looked at her—almost as if he had a subtle smile.

But he was just barely more than a month old—a little baby!

Su Meng gently said, "You know, recently he does something else—he doesn’t like urinating in his diaper. Every time he feels the urge to pee, he starts to hum!"

Mrs. Su, holding the baby, nodded in agreement, "Sisi! I’ve never seen such a clever child!"

She even privately told her daughter that this child was definitely going to excel academically when he grew up.

Li Si, hearing this, couldn’t help but feel her Buding was a rather ordinary baby in comparison.

"Meng Meng, your baby is truly a little prodigy!"

Mrs. Su grinned from ear to ear, "It’s not that exaggerated! Sisi, you two chat while I take the baby to the living room for a walk. This kid loves watching lively scenes and colorful things!"

After Mrs. Su left for the living room, Su Meng closed the door smilingly.

She turned to Li Si and said, "Come on, sit down!"

Li Si sat on the leather couch, still marveling aloud, "Listening to you and your mom, your Peanut is so smart! I’m sure he inherited all the good genes from you and Brother Wu!"

Hearing Long Wu’s name, Su Meng’s smile faded slightly, "Maybe."

Li Si noticed the lingering tension between her and Long Wu, so she changed the subject, "Did the confinement nanny come with you?"

"She did! But you’ve seen my mom’s apartment; it’s not big enough to accommodate another person. Besides, the baby is easy to care for, and my mom and I are more than capable. Having an outsider in the house doesn’t feel right, so I let her go for now!"

"Makes sense! So how long do you plan to stay at your mom’s place?"

Su Meng smiled faintly, "Until I feel like leaving. My mom’s house may be small, but I find it so cozy! He still comes by every day anyway."

"Brother Wu must really adore Peanut, right?"

"He loves him to pieces! Sisi, when Peanut’s with my mom and me, he’s very attached to both of us. But when he sees him, he only wants to be held by him!"

The two of them chatted for a long time before Li Si glanced at her watch and decided to leave.

Mrs. Su enthusiastically tried to keep her for dinner, saying, "Why leave now? I’ve already started preparing food—don’t you want to taste Auntie’s cooking?"

Li Si waved her hands in refusal, laughing, "Auntie, I promise to come over for dinner another day! I can’t today; I already made plans with someone else!"

After several polite refusals, Mrs. Su saw that she was adamant about leaving and didn’t force her, walking her to the door instead.

After leaving Su Meng’s house, Li Si headed straight for a well-known club, where Wang Ruotong and Liu Manlian were already waiting in one of the private rooms.

Liu Manlian glanced at her watch, "Li Si should be arriving soon!"

Wang Ruotong, fiddling with her phone, didn’t even look up, "What’s the rush?" (To be continued.
