CHAPTER 206: CHAPTER 206: CONTINUING TO DRIVE PEOPLE OUT

Seeing Yan Hui refusing to leave, Old Sir Zhong asked Li Shan to throw him out.

"Grandpa Zhong." Yan Hui called out helplessly, he was already an adult.

Old Sir Zhong immediately flew into a rage, picking up a book beside him and throwing it out. The book didn’t hit Yan Hui but fell to the ground: "You little rascal, getting so cocky, not listening to me anymore, doing whatever you want, Li Shan!"

The sudden outburst scared everyone in the room, it had been a long time since they had seen Old Sir Zhong this angry.

Yan Hui and Li Shan quickly recovered, their faces even showing a hint of a smile.

Yan Hui said, "Grandpa Zhong, I’ll listen to you, I’m leaving now, right now."

Li Shan also immediately went to pull Yan Hui, saying, "Old Sir, I’ll throw him out right now." After saying that, he grabbed Yan Hui and walked him outside.

Aunt Zheng and Zheng Yun were somewhat at a loss initially, but after a while Aunt Zheng, believing she held some sway in front of Old Sir Zhong, softly persuaded:

"Old Sir, Xiao Hui was the child you brought out from the orphanage. Whatever he has achieved today, it’s all thanks to your kindness. He wouldn’t ignore anyone else’s words, let alone yours, don’t stoop to his level.

Xiao Hui isn’t ungrateful. Even though you have driven him out these past two years, he is a conscientious boy, always sending gifts back during the holidays.

If there’s anything you’re still unhappy with him about, let Xiao Yun talk to him."

Listening to her mother’s persuasion, Zheng Yun carefully observed Old Sir Zhong’s expression. Over the past year, Old Sir Zhong seemed to have lost interest in everything, always staying alone, and the house had grown quiet, scarcely seeing any visitors.

The sudden outburst was truly shocking.

Had Old Sir Zhong really completely severed all ties with Yan Hui?

Compared to Li Shan, Yan Hui’s achievements were even more remarkable.

After Aunt Zheng finished speaking, Old Sir Zhong reverted back to a gloomy old man, reclining back into his chair, and after a moment, he sighed: "Zheng Yun, you’re twenty-five this year, right?"

Zheng Yun hadn’t expected Old Sir Zhong to suddenly bring this up, after a moment of surprise, she respectfully responded: "Grandpa Zhong, I just turned twenty-five last month."

Old Sir Zhong slowly said, "Unknowingly you have grown up so much, and you’ve accomplished a lot. Time really flies."

Aunt Zheng was unclear why Old Sir suddenly brought this up, she looked at her daughter.

A troubling guess formed in Zheng Yun’s mind.

"It wasn’t easy for your mother to raise you all these years," Old Sir Zhong, not even lifting his eyelids, continued: "In a few days, I’ll have Li Shan to find a place, and take your mother to stay for her elderly days. Let her enjoy some comfort."

This means he’s asking them to leave this place, Zheng Yun’s expression drastically changed, she smiled cautiously: "Grandpa Zhong, if we leave, who will take care of you? The food Brother Lishan cooks isn’t tasty."

Aunt Zheng caught on, Old Sir Zhong was asking her to stay elsewhere, she blankly looked at her daughter, at a loss.

As if knowing Zheng Yun would say this, Old Sir Zhong snorted: "I’m just an old man, surviving is enough, let’s settle it this way."

"Grandpa Zhong!" Zheng Yun raised her voice, worriedly saying: "We can’t agree with this, look at this old house, other than Li Shan, only my mother is left. If my mom and I were to leave, on normal days you wouldn’t even find someone to talk to. If you drive us all away, you... we won’t be at ease."

Aunt Zheng, regaining her senses, also disagreed: "Old Sir, if I leave, who will cook for you, who will keep the house tidy."

"Bang!"

Suddenly, a loud sound.

Old Sir Zhong grabbed a porcelain cup from a small table nearby and threw it to the ground.

"What, are you also going to be like Yan Hui, not listening to me anymore? If you can leave, then leave quickly. I get annoyed seeing people now. Once you are out, Zheng Yun, take good care of your mother. Don’t fool around outside in the future, spend more time with your mother, it wasn’t easy for her to raise you."

After he finished speaking, he stood up and went straight back to his room.

It was not until the door was firmly shut that Aunt Zheng and her daughter exchanged glances.

"What is Old Sir Zhong up to?" Aunt Zheng asked her daughter.

Zheng Yun’s expression was as still as water; Old Sir Zhong was clearly trying to send them away, using old age as nothing but an excuse.

Eventually, it seemed that Old Sir Zhong was dissatisfied with her, hence wanting to send her and her mother away, perhaps as a warning.

Zheng Yun felt like she tried to catch a chicken but ended up losing the rice instead.

Over the past years, Old Sir Zhong had become increasingly secluded, cutting off contact not only with outsiders but also sending away everyone in the house.

This time, she had intended to test Old Sir Zhong’s attitude towards Yan Hui—whether he truly meant to abandon him or if it was just for show.

However, she hadn’t managed to find anything out, and now they too were being driven out.

Old Sir Zhong had already made such a stern statement, she feared he really might find a place for Brother Lishan.

Zheng Yun comforted her mother with a pat and then, supporting each other, they entered Aunt Zheng’s room to discuss what to do next.

After a while, Brother Lishan returned.

He knocked lightly on Old Sir Zhong’s door and carefully entered, only to see Old Sir Zhong, holding an old wooden comb, lost in thought.

Brother Lishan didn’t make a sound to interrupt. He noticed that recently Old Sir Zhong had been fond of taking out the wooden comb and stroking it.

The origin of this wooden comb was unknown; he and Yan Hui had speculated before, wondering if it was a gift from a sweetheart in Old Sir Zhong’s younger days, but they found no evidence.

Brother Lishan had also cautiously asked Old Sir Zhong about it; he merely shook his head and treasured the comb away.

Old Sir Zhong’s gaze grew increasingly vacant, as if recalling the willow forest from forty years ago. The white catkins were gracefully dancing in the air, and he thought he was going to die in that endless willow forest, until a gentle woman descended from the heavens.

She saved him, yet he did her wrong.

He remembered those tear-filled eyes, large eyes defiant yet resolute.

"Don’t ever come to find me again in this lifetime!"

That sentence, despite the forty years, felt every time as if it were whispered in his ear, piercing deeply into his heart.

Brother Lishan saw Old Sir Zhong slowly putting the comb back into the drawer, then stumbled to sit down in a chair, seeming like he might collapse the very next second.

"Bring it here."

Old Sir Zhong finally spoke.

Brother Lishan let out a deep breath; he had almost forgotten to breathe.

He squeezed out what he thought was a decent smile, but his face was expressionless. Upon closer inspection, one might see his cheeks seemed to twitch up by a mere millimeter.

"Old Sir Zhong, how did you know I brought something for you?"

Old Sir Zhong scoffed, too lazy to entertain him, and took the file bag handed over by Brother Lishan, slowly opening it.

Since Yan Hui had just mentioned Wan Chu’er in front of him, that must mean Brother Lishan had told Yan Hui about the few times he had seen Wan Chu’er. Given Yan Hui’s cautious nature, he would certainly have investigated.

Zheng Yun had just talked a lot about Wan Chu’er, and Yan Hui hadn’t countered in detail, so there must be something he was meant to see, thus he had sent Brother Lishan to deliver Yan Hui.

Foolish!
