CHAPTER 505: CHAPTER 208: THE LIFE-AND-DEATH BATTLE OF FAMILY AND LOVE (PART 1)
After a few days of brief reorganization, when the court reopened, despite Lawyer Chen Jiachun repeatedly urging Su Ziceng to stay calm and composed, she still arrived at the courthouse an hour earlier than the scheduled time.
She wasn’t nervous about what unexpected events might occur during the court session today, she was wondering whether Mr. Perro would attend to give testimony. A living person almost vanished like steam over the past five or six days, and neither Sister Mu nor any of the Su Family’s employees had seen Mr. Perro.
Su Ziceng also thought of someone she could ask, that was Wen Maixue, but she just couldn’t muster the courage to initiate contact with Wen Maixue. In her mind, she always felt a sense of shame and inferiority when she saw Wen Maixue.
"Miss Su," Lawyer Chen Jiachun called out from behind her, looking concernedly at her complexion. Recently, the high density of sorting out documents combined with a hectic schedule had even worn down a physically robust person like Chen Jiachun. He was very worried about Su Ziceng. Zhou Dagen mentioned that she left early today and hadn’t even eaten breakfast, "Have some chocolate, they say sweets can cheer you up."
It was the first time Su Ziceng saw a grown man digging out a piece of chocolate from his bag, and she couldn’t help but laugh as she accepted it.
Just as she popped the chocolate into her mouth, a greeting came from behind, "Ziceng, Lawyer Chen," Mr. Perro, dressed in formal attire, looked more like a lawyer than Chen Jiachun.
His appearance made the slightly bitter cocoa taste of the chocolate in Su Ziceng’s mouth instantly turn sweet.
"You?" Su Ziceng was both shocked and delighted, her eyes lighting up instantly. This damn Perro had disappeared for so many days and now suddenly appeared again.
Mr. Perro subconsciously walked between Chen Jiachun and Su Ziceng, he saw the seemingly friendly scene from earlier. Just within a span of a few days, her feelings towards the lawyer seemed to have progressed significantly.
"Mr. Perro, where have you been these past few days? You nearly scared Ziceng to death," Chen Jiachun tried to joke, unaware that Mr. Perro’s gaze turned visibly displeased. Did he say something wrong? Chen Jiachun felt a chill run through his body, "Ziceng... she... Miss Su has been worried about you every day."
Lawyer Chen Jiachun ultimately was a man perceptive of others’ expressions, and with a little more conversation, he pinpointed the root of the issue—it seemed to involve the chocolate.
"Sorry," Mr. Perro said courteously, "I went to Europe for a few days to handle some family matters, things came up suddenly, so I didn’t inform you in time."
Mr. Perro lumped her and Chen Jiachun together in his explanation? Su Ziceng felt the chocolate become somewhat nauseating again. She felt displeased, yet did not want to argue with Mr. Perro before the court session to avoid affecting her performance later in the court.
The guard walked over with Chang Mei. Chen Jiachun, taking advantage of the break, whispered in Chang Mei’s ear. Chang Mei responded absentmindedly as her gaze passed over the spectators and fixed in the direction where Su Ziceng and Mr. Perro stood.
Mr. Perro knew his threat had been effective. Today’s court examination was crucial. Entering the mid-trial phase, any deposition and physical evidence would directly affect the judge’s final verdict.
The representative seats for the Su Family were empty at Yang Wuxu’s place; she had excused herself saying her child had a cold and couldn’t attend the trial today.
The trial personnel and judge walked in, and the clerk announced the start of the court session.
The echoing voices of the courtroom contrasted starkly with the silence of the hospital.
Yang Wuxu, dressing down today compared to the flamboyant attire she wore to visit the hospital the previous days, wore a white dress and had her hair loosely tied back. From just her silhouette, she looked no different from an ordinary nurse.
The doctor should have already made his morning rounds at 9:30 AM, and in the now clean ward, there should be only Su Qingzhang alone.
Yang Wuxu’s hands were covered with a pair of white gloves made of cotton gauze. Her face hung low, her gaze shifting back and forth between the floor and the room number of the ward.
She was not a coward. Even as a child, when bullied, she would not cry out aimlessly; she would seek out Han Fang and his gang to teach the bullies a lesson.
But this was, after all, her first time killing someone with her own hands. The driver who died before, and Secretary Wang, were all done through the hands of others.
