Ning Zijun, the eldest of the Ning family, had come to this area to deliver something. As he was leaving, he spotted his sister-in-law standing in the distance. He was just about to approach her to say hello when he noticed a car slowly pulling up beside her. A man stepped out and started talking to her.

He felt there was something unusual about the man who had gotten out of the car. When he saw the man reach out excitedly, seemingly trying to grab his sister-in-law’s hand, he stepped forward quickly to intervene.

Just as he reached the back of the sycamore tree where Wang Hailan was standing, he overheard the man say, "I can’t believe it’s really you. Are you alright? How is our child? Is it a boy or a girl?"

Wang Hailan appeared alarmed. "What are you doing here?"

The man replied, "It’s a long story. I had no choice but to leave without saying goodbye back then. I just returned to the Capital a few days ago. As soon as I got back, I tried to find you, but the neighbors from your old home said your family moved away over a decade ago and they didn’t know your address. I couldn’t believe our paths crossed here today."

It took Wang Hailan a long time to snap out of her shock. "Since you disappeared, why come back now?"

Seeing the hatred in Wang Hailan’s eyes, the man quickly tried to explain. "Something really urgent happened back then, and I had no choice but to leave. I’ve felt guilty for all these years."

Wang Hailan didn’t reply to his words and instead asked, "Wei Liling, are you married now?"

Wei Liling froze for a moment, then nodded slightly. "I am."

Wang Hailan sneered bitterly, her laughter tinged with mockery. "You’re nothing but a huge liar. You ruined me—left me in that state—and now you brush it off with your ’no choice’ excuse. Did you ever think about how I would survive, pregnant and unmarried?

And now you’ve got the gall to show up, with a fake sense of remorse, telling me you’ve felt guilty all these years? Don’t you find that laughable?"

Wei Liling lowered his head. "I’m sorry. I’ll compensate you."

Tears welled up in Wang Hailan’s eyes. "Compensate? How do you intend to compensate? My entire life has been wrecked by you. Do you think your so-called compensation can erase the damage you caused?"
