CHAPTER 544: CHAPTER 545: PROFOUND AND UNFATHOMABLE
"I used to think so too," Shi Lingyan stood up, "but later, I found that many things actually go against our wishes."
Madam Bai’s face once again showed sorrow.
Shi Lingyan said, "I have to leave now, there are things to take care of at home."
"Won’t you stay a little longer?"
Shi Lingyan shook his head, "You should rest well."
"Alright," Madam Bai looked somewhat regretful, "Old Liu, would you see Ling Yan out?"
Uncle Liu still wore a gentlemanly smile on his face and said to Shi Lingyan, "Mr. Shi, this way, please."
As Uncle Liu walked Shi Lingyan out, they happened to come face to face with Mr. Bai heading their way.
Mr. Bai’s gaze upon Shi Lingyan was complex as he looked intently at him.
And Shi Lingyan, with an unchanged expression, merely nodded slightly to Mr. Bai as a greeting, then quickly walked ahead.
Uncle Liu’s gaze met Mr. Bai’s, and shortly thereafter, continued with his duty.
Both men entered the elevator, standing side by side.
The elevator doors in front of them were like a sleek, clean reflective mirror. Uncle Liu, looking at the young man in the mirror with his eyes slightly dimmed behind the lenses, spoke up, "Mr. Shi, I heard you’ve got a new lover recently?"
Shi Lingyan didn’t answer but instead looked towards Uncle Liu in the mirror’s reflection.
Uncle Liu appeared quite gentle and gentlemanly, always wearing a pair of rimless glasses that gave him a scholarly and modest look. Sensing Shi Lingyan’s gaze, Uncle Liu said, "I just heard."
Shi Lingyan quickly looked away.
Who knew, Uncle Liu would ask again, "Is that so?"
Shi Lingyan could only respond indifferently, "Hmm."
"Oh, that was quick," Uncle Liu maintained his smile, "Changing women as easy as changing clothes, Mr. Shi, you are quite something."
Shi Lingyan didn’t engage in conversation, and soon the elevator reached the garage. Shi Lingyan said, "Here we are, no need to see me out."
"Mr. Shi is just like before, not fond of talking to people," Uncle Liu watched as the elevator doors slowly opened, continuing to talk to himself, "Just like when you were little, no matter what, you didn’t want to speak more to me. I have always wondered if I offended you in any way that made you dislike me so much."
Shi Lingyan pursed his lips and stepped out of the elevator.
"Mr. Shi, in a few days, it will be the anniversary of your parents’ death, right?"
Shi Lingyan’s steps faltered.
But when he turned back, the elevator doors had already closed, and Uncle Liu’s consistently serene smile became unfathomable in the closing gap.
Shi Lingyan’s eyebrows furrowed deeply as he turned and pressed the elevator button aggressively, but the elevator was already slowly rising away, with no intention of turning back.
A foreboding sense peaked in that moment, and Shi Lingyan watched as the elevator ascended. Narrowing his eyes, he took out his phone and dialed Yuejie’s number.
The call connected quickly, and it was Madam Bai who answered.
Madam Bai sounded quite surprised, "Ling Yan, what’s the matter?"
Hearing Madam Bai’s voice, Shi Lingyan felt the premonition fade significantly, and he quickly said, "Nothing, I just remembered that there might be a change in temperature in the next few days. Remember to dress warmly and watch the indoor temperature."
Madam Bai sounded touched, "Do you want to speak to Yuejie?"
"No need, I’m heading back."
"Alright," Madam Bai’s voice clearly carried a sense of loss, "Then be careful on your way."
"Hmm."
After hanging up the phone, the elevator arrived just in time. Shi Lingyan thought for a moment but decided not to enter.
