Chapter 661: Chapter 444 Awkward
The clock pointed to half-past three, and Wang Jing shifted uncomfortably in her seat, clearing her throat softly. Seeing that Song Xiaoyu had not reacted at all, she had no choice but to stand up and approach her, “Teacher, shall I go on rounds?”
Without looking up, Song Xiaoyu said, “Wait for Lin Chuxia to come back and you two can go together.”
Wang Jing bit her lip and returned to her seat, unable to control the tears that spilled from her eyes, dripping onto the desk and forming a large, wet circle.
Song Xiaoyu sighed to herself and pretended not to see. She regretted her past approach of turning a blind eye towards Wang Jing. For someone who is psychologically fragile and lacks a sense of security, the more you shield her from adversity, the more fragile she becomes.
With such mental fortitude, how can she become a qualified doctor? How can she truly handle things on her own? She sighed again, forcing herself not to think about it or look at her, fearing she might soften her heart again, which would really be Wang Jing’s undoing.
Just then, Chuxia hurried into the office, and Song Xiaoyu immediately said, “Chuxia, hurry up and go on rounds with your senior sister.”
“Yes,” Chuxia replied as she went to her desk to find her record book, then took the blood pressure cuff and thermometer and quickly followed after. By the time she had gathered the equipment, Wang Jing had already left.
Along the way, Wang Jing greeted acquaintances with a smile, but was consistently dismissive towards Chuxia. Seeing this, Chuxia understood that Wang Jing’s earlier crying must have been an unsuccessful attempt to complain about her, and now she was taking out her frustration on Chuxia.
Chuxia didn’t mind being ignored by the other, but when it came to asking patients questions during rounds, seeing the two of them like this, how could the patients trust them?
“Senior sister.”
Wang Jing pretended not to hear and quickened her pace.
“Senior Sister Wang Jing.”
Chuxia raised her voice, drawing the attention of the passing nurses to them both.
Wang Jing, who cared about her own face, afraid Chuxia would call out again, slowed her pace and stared at Chuxia, speaking sternly, “What is it?”
Chuxia replied unapologetically, “We are here to do rounds, not to fight. Could you please be a little more professional?”
“How am I not professional?” Wang Jing’s eyes flashed with mockery, “Who is unprofessional here, me or you? Taking leave, entertaining guests, are you here to be an intern or to socialize? I might skip work now and then, but I don’t treat this place as a living room when I’m supposed to be working. Lin Chuxia, do you think just because you married into a good family, everyone should hold you up?
Sorry, but Wang Jing can’t do that. I rely on my own abilities to make a living, not on connections. If you can’t stand me, have someone fire me, then I’ll really believe you!”
As she said all this, Wang Jing raised her voice, drawing glances from several family members of patients passing by them.
Chuxia frowned slightly, “If you have an issue with my taking leave or entertaining guests, you can complain about me or report me to the hospital leadership.
But for now, can you please adjust your emotions? Patients are already in a bad mood because of their illness; what do you think they feel when they see us with cold faces, ignoring each other?
If our unrest leads to inaccurate record-keeping during the examination and affects the patients’ recovery, won’t you feel guilty?”
Perhaps sensing the logic in her words, Wang Jing didn’t respond to her but closed her eyes and took several deep breaths. Then, she forced a stiff smile on her face, “Let’s go.”
Seeing that Wang Jing had taken her words to heart, Chuxia said nothing more and followed her to the patient ward.
Song Xiaoyu was responsible for seven patients, divided across three wards. When Chuxia and Wang Jing entered Room 418, Jiao Meiqin and Li Qing, two interns under Director Huang, were just leaving.
As Director Huang had issues with Song Xiaoyu, and as disciples of Huang, Jiao Meiqin and Li Qing naturally looked down on Wang Jing and Chuxia. Seeing that they had arrived late, they contemptuously pursed their lips at them.
“Work diligently, the patient’s health is of utmost importance,” Jiao Meiqin said.
“How are we not being diligent?” Wang Jing, who was already seething with nowhere to vent her anger, had her face flush with rage. If it weren’t in the ward, she probably would have grabbed the other person and given them a beating.
Chuxia sighed helplessly and walked straight to the beds she was in charge of: one, three, and four. She distributed thermometers to the relatives of the patients and then took the sphygmomanometer to measure the patients’ blood pressure.
The patient in bed one was an old lady who had undergone an inguinal hernia surgery. She was almost recovered and had an optimistic personality. As she extended her arm for Chuxia to take her blood pressure, she did not stop talking, “Doctor Xiao Lin, how old are you this year?”
“Granny, why do you ask everyone’s age when you meet them?” The attendant was the old lady’s grandson, a young man in his twenties, who smiled apologetically at Chuxia, “My grandmother is just like this, a chatterbox, she always has to chat a bit with whoever she catches.”
Chuxia responded with a smile, “Without such a cheerful and optimistic nature, how could Granny’s health have recovered so quickly?”
“Doctor Xiao Lin really knows how to speak; I love listening to you,” the old lady said, her eyes crinkling with a smile, “Doctor Xiao Lin, my grandson’s name is Wang Xin, he’s twenty-three this year and works at the post office. He’s very honest and hardworking…”
“Granny…” Wang Xin interrupted his grandmother, his face turning beet red, “What are you doing? Doctor Xiao Lin is a doctor, not a committee auntie.”
The old lady looked at her grandson innocently, “It’s you who told me, Doctor Xiao Lin looks nice, has a good temperament, and that if you could find a wife like her in the future, it would be great.”
Wang Xin’s face turned from red to purple, and he glared at the old lady in anger, unable to utter a word.
“This child, now he’s shy,” the old lady chuckled and shook her head. Looking at Chuxia, she said, “Doctor Xiao Lin, the biggest fault of this grandson of mine is his shyness. After you and Director Song came for rounds this morning and left, he really did tell me that, and I figured, we’ll be discharged soon, so if we don’t say it now, won’t we lose the chance?”
The attendant in bed three, a middle-aged woman, laughed and joined in, “Granny Wang, you’re always thinking of the bright side. Doctor Xiao Lin is so beautiful and capable; she must already have someone.”
“That’s not necessarily the case,” the old lady replied, then turned to Chuxia with a nervous look, “Doctor Xiao Lin, you don’t have a significant other yet, do you?”
“The low pressure is 80, the high pressure 125,” Chuxia told Wang Jing to record it and then smiled in response to the old lady, “Granny Wang, I’m already married.”
“You got married so early?” The old lady sighed with a look of regret and then said, “Well, that figures, such a beautiful girl, we couldn’t possibly contend. Doctor Xiao Lin, you married a military officer, didn’t you?”
“Yes,” Chuxia said with a smile and moved on to bed three.
The old lady then shifted her attention to Wang Jing, who was following her and noticing the somewhat gloomy expression on her face, she said, “Doctor Xiao Wang, you’re also quite pretty. Smile more, smiling makes you more likable.”
Wang Jing forced a stiff smile and after pondering for a moment, explained for herself, “The intern who just went out was deliberately targeting our director, and I just can’t bring myself to smile right now.”
“Hehe…” The old lady laughed but said no more.
After tending to room 418 and moving into room 419, followed by room 420, without exception, every patient liked Chuxia more than Wang Jing, compounding the gloomy mood of an already disheartened Wang Jing.
When they finished their rounds and went downstairs, they happened to encounter Jiao Meiqin again. She glanced at Chuxia and looked towards Wang Jing with a smirk, “When are you going to get rid of this little sister of yours?”
“What are you talking about?” Back at the ward door, Wang Jing had held back, but not anymore. She grabbed Jiao Meiqin and pushed her into the meeting room with the door open.
Chuxia didn’t want to get involved, but then she thought that if she just left, it would only leave Director Huang with more to mock about Song Xiaoyu not being able to mentor students well, always leading them astray. So, she followed them inside.
Jiao Meiqin was a bit flustered when she was pushed into the meeting room without warning, and now seeing Chuxia enter as well, she quickly said, “Lin Chuxia, what your Senior Sister can’t stand the most is Director Song taking disciples. Every time he takes one in, she drives them away. Oddly enough, your Teacher Song still listens to her. So, you’d better be prepared that one of these days she might kick you out too.”
“Senior Sister Jiao, I just want to remind you that we are all employees of Ward 401. Regardless of who loses face in front of patients, it’s the face of Ward 401 that’s being lost,” Chuxia finished and pulled Wang Jing to leave, “Senior Sister, our teacher is waiting for us.” (To be continued.
