Inez sucked in a breath, feeling the sting of her words even though she was not the recipient. "I am sorry."
"It’s alright."
It wasn’t alright, and Inez knew that it wasn’t. But the words had already left her lips, and she couldn’t take them back even if she wished to. Oh, how she hoped that her siren powers came with the ability to turn time back. But unfortunately, they didn’t.
iIt would have been much better if you had used your mind before opening your mouth. /iHer siren chimed inside her head, and Inez nearly lost her temper with her as well. However, she knew that Nerina was right. It was her fault for letting her anger get the best of her. She inhaled deeply. "I shouldn’t have said that; it’s not your fault, and I am sorry for taking my anger out on you. I didn’t mean to hurt you in the least—"
"Like I said, it’s alright," said Scarlet with a wry smile. "I know that even if you don’t want to, you can’t help but see me as your enemy."
"I don’t—" Inez began, but Scarlet raised one hand up in the air.
"You don’t, of course. But you might still feel some resentment. My dad is alive and well, while yours is not. It’s normal for you to feel angry and upset, and a little defensive. I understand that, after all, our mom did fuck up and too greatly at that."
Inez wished she could tell Scarlet that it’s not like that, but in honesty? She knew that her sister was right. She did feel a subtle resentment in her heart. Scarlet and Ricky had their father by her side while she lost hers. Why? Because her mother fucked up really good? Why should she be the unlucky one? When her half-siblings were in a much better situation than her own?
iWow, pessimist much? /iNerina remarked within her head.
iShut up. /iInez growled, rubbing the space between her brows. iYou don’t know what it feels like. /i
iYeah. But what I do know is that she has done her best to help you out all the time. /iNerina reminded her, and gosh, that only made her feel even worse.
Sucking in her lip between her teeth, Inez tried to recollect her scattered thoughts. "Look, I messed up. You are right; I did feel a bit resentful because of what I found out.. I am not angry at you." Turning around on her feet, she headed toward the path where they came from. "However, it’s not you whom I am angry at. It’s our mom. I really wish I could question her why she did that to my dad, but I cannot." For the first time, she was feeling frustrated about hiding her identity. If she were still walking around as Inez Sinir, then she could have barged into the Venus territory to question her mother, but now she couldn’t because there was a big, bad alpha after her.
She couldn’t help but feel annoyed at Dominic as well. When she was right next to him, the man had never given her a good look after Abertha’s death, and now that was no longer bothering her; he was determined to hunt her down.
Scarlet nced at her. Her expression softened with a hint of sadness. "I know that you are not ming me and even if you were, I couldn’t have said anything. Not really. After all, it’s true that you had it worse than me and Ricky."
Noticing the concern in Scarlet’s eyes, Inez was d that she at least had someone by her side. She smiled at her sister. "That I did. I am not going to say that I had it better than you or that it wasn’t hard." She was trying to smooth the awkward air around the two. "How about we—" Inez was just about to suggest that they head over to the new cafe and order their strawberry boba tea when her foot got caught on something and she fell first on the ground.
"Inez!"
"Ouch!"
Inez winced as she turned around to see what had tripped her. However, her senses went into high alert when she sensed fresh blood and given the shocked expression on Scarlet’s face, she might have sensed the same. The two sisters turned around and saw the corpse lying on the floor. It was a young woman.
A young woman whom Inez recognised at once.
It was Alpha Remy’s mate, the woman whom she threatened thest time she ran into her.
"Quick! I smell blood."
Inez snapped out of her thoughts when she heard the voices of the guards who were running toward them. She wanted to get up and run but even without trying, she knew that it was impossible. The guards came rounding around the corner and the second they saw Inez sitting on the ground with Scarlet, they turned even more wary.
"Quick, catch them! They have murdered someone."
**
Crack.
Dominic looked down at the pen in between his fingers and looked up at the Elder in front of him. "Just what did you say to me?"
The older man flinched. If he was not wrong, he was called Elder Rollins or something along those lines.
iIt would be great if he rolled off from here, or I will make him, /ihis wolf mused within his head.
iYou cannot; the council elders will not like it, /iDominic reminded.
iShame. /iHis wolf really sounded upset over the notion of not being able to send this man rolling.
"I am not saying that you are not doing a good job, Alpha Cherith." Elder Rollins raised his hands in the air and said to Dominic, "But I did receive some reports on how you have been paying attention to look for a woman rather than paying attention to the case where the vampires attacked the Bridge at Mistville town."
Dominic clenched his teeth before putting down the broken pen between his fingers. "Are you sure they were vampires?"
