Chapter 306: I Still Miss My Ex
h4Chapter 306: I Still Miss My Ex/h4
Elder Rollins’s shoulders stiffened, and he looked at Dominic with an air of someone who was preparing for a long fight. Rolling his shoulders, he said to Dominic, "And what do you mean by those words?"
"You know what I mean; in fact, every single one of you knows what I am trying to say here." Dominic had been a member of the council for a very long time. Long enough to understand how to find his way in thisbyrinth-like hierarchy. However, at that very moment, he just couldn’t summon the energy to lower his head, tell the man to fuck off in his head and go on his merry way. "There were signs of shifters breaking into the town next to Mistvile. Enough evidence proves that the intruders who entered the town were shifters—shifters who could drink and suck blood—"
There was a loud, ricocheting bang in the conference room as Elder Pierson banged his fist on the table. He red at Dominic and stated, "What a nonsensical theory. Do you even believe what you are saying? Shifters who can suck blood? There has been no evidence to prove that such a thing could even happen. You want us to believe such a twisted story? Come on, Alpha Cherith. You can do better than that."
The man rolled his eyes to assert his stance, but Dominic could see that flickering eyes of the man. So he was either lying or trying to avoid facing the truth, and given how much he knew these elders, Dominic knew that there was a very good chance it was both. He closed his eyes and sucked in another breath before saying, "I have nothing to say if this is your stance, Elder Pierson."
Slowly getting to his feet, he nced at the faces of the stubborn old men. Now he knew why Killian would rather take on the title of a reckless, frustrating and infuriating alpha who would never understand the severity of his position rather thaning to these stupid meetings. Because he too wished he could do the same at that very moment. He exhaled deeply before pivoting on the spot and said to the rest of the elders, "I cannot continue with this investigation. Since you believe that I am on the wrong trail, then you can look for someone who will lead you to the right one. I believe that you have many to help you with that."
He then stormed out of the conference room without saying anything else to the elders. Tao, hot on his heels, chased after him. He said in a hurry, "The elders will not like it. They will certainly see this as an act of rebellion."
"Then they might as well start doing that," Dominic gritted out. His teeth were clenched so tightly that he could hear them grind. "I have done everything to make them see the truth, but they want to bury their heads under the sand and ignore the warnings that I am giving them. Since that is the case, then they might as well look for someone who will continue giving them false security."
Tao stared at him.
"What?" Sensing that his beta was looking at him, Dominic turned and looked at the man with a confused gaze.
"It’s nothing; you —seem to have changed," said Tao with a hint of awe in his tone. "You were always so—" He frowned and continued with a subtle tone, "Disciplined. I have never seen you going against the council; in the past, you would have ignored the truth just like the rest."
He would have; he would certainly have done that but—
iSomeone feels guilty. But unfortunately, it’s toote. /i
His beast scoffed within his head, and Dominic ignored him. It wasn’t toote; he could still investigate the truth. As long as he could dig a bit deeper, he would know the truth. He would.
And when the truthes to light, it would be just as he expected.
iAnd what if it’s not? /i
iIt will be. /i
Dominic snapped at his beast before marching down the corridor. He didn’t believe that he would miss something so important; there was no way he wouldn’t recognise Inez in the surveince recording and yet Luca’s words still rang in his head.
iWhat if it was never Inez? What if it was someone else? /i
No. There was no way that could be possible. He knew Inez; he would recognise her.
iAre you sure about that? /iThe voice of his wolf echoed in his head with a mocking jeer. iAs far as I know, you are yet to realise the kind of woman our ex-mate was, you are a fool, Dominic Cherith. And you will soon realise it. /i
iShe is not our—/i
iEx-mate? Are you really going to seriously deny it? I have felt the fragments of the mating bond getting weaker. They were weak to begin with but now I can barely feel them. Only a fool would not notice the changes, Dominic. Our mate is letting go of us and that could only mean one thing: she had renounced us. /i
The words left a stinging sensation within his very heart because Dominic knew what it meant. It meant that Inez had found someone else. Someone who meant more to her than he could ever mean to her.
It was weird. So freaking weird.
Because he had never seen iting, never thought of letting her step away from him even for a second. And yet it had happened. She was no longer by his side and by someone else’s side—even when Dominic told himself again and again that there was no need for him to feel sorry or hurt, that there was more than one Inez in this world—only one reminder rang in his head; ihe just wanted her. /i
Even now his heart was tearing apart; he wished he could hunt down Inez and skin the man who was taking her away from him but couldn’t because he had no fucking clue where she was.
"Let me the fuck go!"
