Chapter 878: Chapter 867: The Eunuch in the Palace?

But when Song Yun thought about Xu Ying being watched by so many men, he dismissed the idea.

By the time he left the military base, it was already past ten at night. Song Yun didn’t go anywhere else and headed straight back to the Song Residence.

After the initial novelty wore off, the Song Residence now felt just dull and weathered to Song Yun. Staying in such a place for too long, he felt he would lose all passion.

Song Yun checked with Ye Qingsi about his father’s situation, but there was still no news. Song Yun was quite worried, but seeing Ye Qingsi’s unruffled demeanor, he relaxed a bit and returned to his room.

Qingluan had already returned to their room somehow and asked with a smile when Song Yun got back, “How was today’s training?”

Song Yun took off his top and said, “Not bad, those rookies are a bit green, but their spirit is pretty good. If they keep training, they should be able to compete with teams from other countries. I’m going to take a shower, we’ll talk later.”

With that, Song Yun walked into the bathroom by himself.

After Song Yun finished his shower and came out, Qingluan said, “The National Security Bureau just sent a message, asking you to go there tomorrow morning.”

“Oh? They want me to go to the National Security Bureau? For what?” Song Yun asked.

“I’m not sure, they just said to report there,” Qingluan replied. “But you need to be careful.”

“Careful about what?” Song Yun couldn’t understand.

“Gai Nie—though he wasn’t part of the National Security Bureau, he was a confidant of one of its old members. Last time when Gai Nie was killed by us in WZ, the people up top didn’t respond. I think this time when you go, you’ll probably get a reaction!”

Song Yun laughed and said, “Reaction or not, the person is dead anyway, isn’t it?”

“Haha, that’s true!” Qingluan nodded with a smile.

The next morning, Song Yun got up early because it was his first time reporting to the department he worked for, even if the “worked for” part came with quotation marks, Song Yun felt it was necessary to be solemn about it.

The National Security Bureau’s external office is located on XXX Street in Beijing, which houses many diplomatic missions, conveniently dealing with foreign-related affairs, so the Bureau’s external location was placed here.

Song Yun took a taxi because he wasn’t familiar with Beijing. If he drove himself, he didn’t know how many wrong turns he would make. The car did have GPS, but taking a taxi was more convenient.

Getting out of the taxi, Song Yun looked at the rather ordinary building in front of him and felt something was odd. This National Security Bureau seemed pretty unremarkable. It’s well-known that we pay a lot of attention to extravagant projects, especially for a foreign-affairs institution like the Bureau, money is never an issue. But this three-story small building looked exactly like the office building of the Cultural Heritage Bureau—firstly shabby, secondly outdated, filled with the dust and gravitas of history.

Song Yun stood at the door and, after checking the Shen Zhou National Security Bureau sign hanging beside it to confirm it was indeed the Bureau, walked inside.

The first thing he saw was a lobby like any ordinary administrative office, but it was not as grand as other agencies; it was just a small and compact lobby with an old desk inside. Behind this desk sat a young woman, looking to be in her twenties, wearing gold-rimmed glasses, appearing soft and fragile.

In front of the young woman was a placard with the word “Reception” written on it.

Generally, an administrative agency’s reception area wouldn’t directly label itself “Reception”; usually, it’s just empty, and typically, such agencies don’t have much reception.

“This National Security Bureau is indeed bizarre!” Song Yun remarked to himself. The young woman heard his voice, looked up at Song Yun, and asked in a calm tone that made it hard to discern any emotion, “Hello, may I ask what business you have?”

“This is the National Security Bureau, right?” Song Yun looked around and noticed there was only this woman on this floor!

“Yes, this is the National Security Bureau, may I ask what business you have?” The young woman pushed her gold-rimmed glasses and asked.

“Well… I’m an external personnel reporting here from the Bureau.” Song Yun had hoped to meet some legendary figures here, but there was only this lifeless woman present, which left him quite disappointed.

“Oh, could you show me your credentials?” The young woman spoke, still without much emotion in her words.

Song Yun retrieved his National Security Bureau Special Action Department identification from his body and handed it to the young woman.

The young woman accepted Song Yun’s credentials and swiped it through the machine placed in front of her. Then, Song Yun saw the young woman’s mouth slowly open—very wide—and exclaimed, “You… you’re from the National Security Bureau Special Action Department!”

“Yes, that’s me!” Song Yun was bewildered. Did this woman go crazy upon seeing my photo? Am I really that handsome? Oh, right, I am quite good-looking.

“Sorry, so sorry!” The young woman’s face was full of apology, she stood up and directly bowed to Song Yun, saying, “Terribly sorry, I didn’t know you were from the inner circles, my hospitality was poor!”

“Inner circles?” Song Yun was further confused, did she figure out I’ve been to prison before?

“Yes, aren’t you from the palace there?” The young woman seemed to be in awe and said, “This early in the morning, you’re not staying in the palace, coming here, is there a particular reason?”

Alright, Song Yun really couldn’t figure out what the woman meant. From the palace? Did she think I was an eunuch?

“I’m here to report!” Song Yun said, “The higher-ups have notified me to report here.”

“Oh, I see I see, you mean you’re from the palace? Ah, you should have said earlier, I’ll register you right away!” The young woman swiped Song Yun’s credentials on another machine and then said, “Normally when people from the inner circles return, they report directly in the palace. I’m encountering someone reporting outside for the first time. Fortunately, we have the machines here, otherwise, reporting wouldn’t be possible!”

“Oh!” Song Yun nodded and said, “You’re talking about the Forbidden City, right?”

“Yes, yes, aren’t people from there usually reporting directly inside?” the young woman asked.
