Chapter 124 Lipstick Marks

I loved Shawn’s money, but not enough to swallow my pride.

“Shawn, I know you men want the best of both worlds, like trying to get rich off a dead wife. It’s your obsession. But I’m not dead yet. I’m giving you enough respect, and I’d appreciate it if you could respect my feelings in return,” I said, staring at Shawn, emphasizing each word.

Shawn was stunned, shocked, and in disbelief.

Who would have thought that the once soft, easy target would grow fangs and speak such biting words? To him, I was probably still that girl who adored him blindly.

I lowered my head, mocking myself. “Women lose because we keep thinking about ‘one life, one love, while our views arepletely opposite to yours.”

Shawn frowned, clearly at a loss for how to continue the argument.

“Tiffany, I don’t mean anything by it, and I’m not trying to get a divorce. I just … need you to understand. Thepany’s been swampedtely, and the pressure’s been overwhelming. Last night, I had to attend to some overseas clients, so I asked Queena to help. She’s fluent in sixnguages, and she handles this kind of thing more efficiently than I do,” Shawn exined, rambling a bit.

I looked iat /ihim, unable to find any fault. Yes, he needed towork, and someone like Queena, fluent in sixnguages, was a valuable asset. Then there was me–just a housewife, clueless about everything, getting petty and jealous for no reason.

I sighed, realizing that I hadn’t quite figured out my role.

But what exactly did it mean to be a good wife?

“Sorry,” I said, apologizing before he could.

Shawn’s narrow eyes widened again. He must have expected me to act the same way I always did–unreasonable and petty, trying to pit myself against Queena in his eyes.

But this time, I wasn’t arguing or causing a scene. Instead, I apologized. He immediately took my hand and said, “What did you do wrong? You haven’t done anything wrong. It’s my fault as your bhusband /bfor not telling you where I was or what I was doing beforehand. It’s normal for you to overthink things.”

I pulled my hand away from his, stood up, and turned my back to him, looking out at the warm sunrise. “Hubby, maybe I’m not good at being a wife. Neither of us is wrong.”

Shawn suddenly got up, walked behind me, and gently wrapped his arms around me. His chin rested on my shoulder as he whispered, “If neither of us is at fault, then let’s stop arguing, okay? There’s nothing urgent today. I just want to spend time with you.” D

I shook my head, turned around, and pushed him away. “Hubby, did you take a look at your cor when you were in the shower?”

Shawn was taken aback for a moment.

I continued, “There are two lipstick marks. You forgot to wipe them off.”

Shawn’s face froze in shock, and then he quickly exined, “I drank too muchst night and don’t remember what happened, but I promise you, I didn’t sleep with anyone.”

I listened to his exnation as he tried to justify himself, but I remained unmoved.

“All right, I believe you. I know you would never betray me. It’s just … someone wanted me to see those lipstick marks,” I said quietly, gently wrapping my arms around myself. “The sunlight outside is nice. I want to go out for a walk this afternoon.”

“Do you want me to igo /iwith you?” Shawn asked softly.

“No, I’ll just take a stroll on my own,” I replied, grabbing my bag and leaving.

Shawn seemed like he wanted to stop me, but his mind was clearly distracted by the lipstick marks on his shirt. He was probably still reyingst night’s passionate encounter with Queena.

As soon as I stepped out the door, I received a message from Queena.

“Mr. Hartwell didn’t throw upst night, did he? Sorry, I couldn’t stop him. He closed two big deals and was so happy. Next time, I’ll make sure he drinks less.”

I looked at her smug message and felt disgusted.

I thought for a moment and decided to reply, because staying silent would only make her think I was hurt.

“Ms. Tackman, you’re so thoughtful. Next time, make sure the lipstick marks are on his chest, so even without you saying anything, I’ll know just how happy you two were.”

After sending the message, Queena didn’t respond. Was she feeling guilty, or was she just enjoying her victory?

I had no way of knowing.

I wandered through a few luxury stores in Craneport, and bought gifts for my parents and a DSLR camera for my brother, who had asked for one before.

I sat by the window at a café, basking in the warm afternoon sunlight, feeling warm all over.

“Hey.” Suddenly, a cheerful male voice called out to me from outside the window. I turned to look and was surprised to see the same drunk boy I had bumped into in the corridor yesterday.
