CHAPTER 19: CAUGHT EAVESDROPPING

Back inside, Alisha was walking around the house. Dinner had ended a while ago, and she excused herself with the opportunity to snoop around. She didn’t know how far she would go but she needed to gather as much information as she could before Dante returned with his father.

She’d managed to dig up some illegal stuff against Mr. De Rossi, things she wasn’t sure Dante was aware of but either way, she was going to see if she could get something out of this one chance she’s in their mansion.

Alisha reached his study that was made of transparent glass that was sitting on the second floor. A sigh escaped her lips. However, the feeling vanished when the door didn’t open.

"What? Not now? Why would he need to lock it?" She couldn’t help but wonder, her face contorting into frustration.

She could easily pick the lock if she wanted to since she had a pin clipped to her head, but finding the study room had already taken her enough time. If she wasted more, one of the servants would come looking for her.

"I knew you were up to no good," she suddenly heard a voice from behind her.

Alisha stiffened. That voice belonged to Jennifer. The latter had followed her here.

Slowly, she turned to find the latter glaring at her like she was the most contagious disease in that house and she wouldn’t want to come in close contact with it.

"Is this the way to the guest rest room the servant gave you earlier?" She demanded.

"I lost my way. This is my first time here and I took the wrong turn," Alisha lied.

Jenifer scoffed. "Do you really think that I believe that?" She glanced behind Alisha. "You were planning on breaking into uncle’s home office? Are you a thief? I should have known. You’re just a nobody who probably sold your body to Dante so he could marry you."

Alisha had only exchanged a few words with Jennifer but she could already guess that the latter wasn’t very bright.

Of all the things she could accuse her of, she thought she was a thief and a slut.

’Wow.’

"Why are you so quiet? Because I caught you right? Wait until I tell uncle that I saw you here and we’ll see if you’ll remain quiet," said Jennifer, a grin on her lips.

"You can go on right ahead. But I still stand by my story. I got lost and I ended up here. The rest room is still on this second floor," said Alisha, a smile also on her lips. "You’ll just end up stupid in front of your uncle."

Jennifer’s grin faltered.

"As for the slut part, was that the way you got to get into Dante’s bed? Now you think that’s the only way to get to a man’s heart?" Alisha asked. She scanned Jennifer up in her skimpy gown. "Looked like you were dressed up to seduce him tonight, just like a slut would. Unfortunately for you, my Dante is not the type to pick up left over trash dumped on the streets, hmm? Have a wonderful night, Jennifer."

Then she intentionally bumped into Jennifer’s shoulders and left. Jennifer turned to glare at Alisha, fist clenched with teeth gnashing like a grinding machine.

"That woman is going to be a problem," she thought out loud.

Alisha headed back downstairs but didn’t see anyone there anymore. Mrs. De Rossi was nowhere in sight, the same with Mylo, Dante’s younger brother. And Dante wasn’t done with his conversation with his father.

She could just go to find them but with how large the mansion was, she was bound to get lost

again, and this time, found by someone she couldn’t trick.

Alisha decided to step out of the mansion to catch fresh breath. When Dante was done having a word with his father, he would come looking for her.

The night was cold as the wind was so chilly, it cut to the bones. Instinctively, Alisha wrapped her arms around her body. Her dress was short, forcing her to tremble in the cold.

She realized she couldn’t stand outside and decided to head back in when she suddenly heard a faint voice. Her ears instantly perked to where the sound came from.

Enduring the cold, she stepped out, making sure to keep her feet light on the ground.

She saw him. It was Mylo, which she could tell from his back facing her.

"His life is going to be in danger if he’s adamant on campaigning for the same position as my father," he bit into the phone. "Is he crazy or something?"

Alisha’s eyebrows furrowed as she couldn’t hear what the other person was saying.

"If he’s willing to throw his life away so easily, then there’s nothing I can do about it. The election hasn’t started yet, but that seat already belongs to my father," he claimed. "I know him. He will do everything and anything to get what he wants."

Alisha’s frown only deepened.

She’d heard of the new senate president seat election that will take place in Lexora in the next few months, which was a lot of time to prepare.

According to the news, only two people are participating in the election—Mr. De Rossi and Jaime Lorenzo, a man almost as powerful as Mr. De Rossi.

There were supposed to be more contestants, but all of them had backed off a few weeks ago, only leaving Jaime with Mr. De Rossi.

Judging from what Mylo was spewing, Jaime’s life wouldn’t be safe if he continued to fight for that seat. And his killer would be Mr. De Rossi.

"Update me if he’s still hellbent on running for the election."

Alisha took a step back when she realized that Mylo was about to hang up on the call. However, when she turned to leave, her head hit a hard object or a person.

"Were you eavesdropping on Mylo just a second ago?" She heard Dante ask.
