Rewriting My Fate in the Apocalypse
Chapter 235: The Secret of the Underground Lab
CHAPTER 235: CHAPTER 235: THE SECRET OF THE UNDERGROUND LAB
"During my time in the army, there were rumors of a project. Code name ’Heir.’ They said it involved mixing human DNA with... something else. Soldiers used to joke about it being alien blood, but no one ever saw proof. It was always dismissed as drunken talk."
He pointed at the pod. "That was no rumor. It was something real going on."
Taking a deep breath, Li Han continued, "About twenty years ago, my father called me to the study and gave me a mission.
He said that there was something dangerous that could cause a catastrophe in the world and had to be stopped. He said that something similar had happened before but our grandfather had used the Li family influence to shut it down and erased the tracks.
However, those people had not given up and started again. He showed me pictures of these monsters. I am guessing those photos should be the ones my sister had stumbled upon when she was younger." Uncle Li took a deep breath and swallowed some saliva.
Just as he was about to continue, a robot appeared with a tray balanced on its hands with several cups of tea on it.
Both Leng Pan and Lu Zhen knew that this was good stuff, so they took it immediately and started drinking.
Seeing that the people familiar with the mansion were drinking the tea offered, the others followed suit.
After taking a sip of the wonderful tea, Li Han continued with his narration, "Father explained that the government had invested in a project that was said to do research that would improve the defense of our country.
It involved some experiments that would create super soldiers. Some people were against it saying that if something went wrong, it could cause a disaster.
But people are greedy, and wanting to outdo superpower countries like the M Country, the opposition lost. Our grandpa was opposed to it, but after two soldiers who had volunteered for project were presented to them with superpowers including super-strength and superspeed, they relented.
However, rumors started surfacing about these supersoldiers being a cover for something sinister going on behind the scenes.
And to make matters worse, some of the higher-ups were involved.
Grandpa didn’t ignore this and sent a spy to the lab, that’s how he got those photos.
After confirming that the research center was indeed doing something bad and the subjects used for such experiments of creating monsters were the soldiers who had volunteered to undergo the procedures so as to strengthen the country, Grandpa decided to stop it and make sure it was completely shut down.
However, he didn’t know who to trust in the government, so he resolved to use the power of the Li family.
He had people secretly infiltrate the lab and build a secret chamber not far from the lab. This was because it would prove difficult to destroy the experiment subjects or move them somewhere else without being noticed.
The only way was to move them somewhere close. So, a secret chamber was built and the key was a jade pendant and the blood of the Li family descendant.
This way, he would ensure that once those things were moved, they wouldn’t fall into the wrong hands.
So, one time, his spies created chaos in the lab and during evacuation for safety reasons, all those things including the data were moved to the secret chamber and then it was locked and the passage to the chamber sealed." Uncle Li stopped again to sip his tea before continuing.
"After that episode, everyone else in the lab collapsed and it was never traced back to the Li family.
However, twenty years ago, my father called me and told me about this, then explained that for some reason, the experiments had started again and they were conducted in the same laboratory as before.
He gave me a mission to destroy it again and managed to get me there as the head of security.
I lay low for three years and watched as the project used for cover produce several supersoldiers who might still be active on duty today.
However, the filthy things going on behind the scenes didn’t escape me. One time when I found out that they were about to release some of the monsters they had created to go out as a test, I decided to act.
I couldn’t let that happen because it could wipe out a part of the country’s population. So, the day before the execution of the plan, I secretly sent out the last batch of soldiers who had succeeded in gaining abilities and sent a copy of the data this new round of experiments had yielded to a server your grandpa had given me.
I then had the other security guards leave before I destroyed most of the containers holding the experimental subjects and sealed the place completely.
I even threw in a couple of bombs for good measure and made sure that all the scientists involved had been locked in there.
I then resigned from the army and never heard of these things again. I didn’t expect you to stumble upon that place, but from the looks of it, those experiments must have resumed elsewhere." Uncle Li finally finished his take.
It was both shocking and exciting.
Leng Pan’s gaze swept across the room, landing on each family member. "This is why we can’t keep this to ourselves any longer. If the apocalypse was triggered by zombies alone, it would be terrifying enough.
But if there were experiments like this happening before the world fell apart, then we’re facing more than just monsters. We’re facing secrets buried so deep they were never meant to be uncovered."
Her words sent shivers through everyone. The glowing rock on the table pulsed faintly, as if to echo the tension.
Uncle Li broke the silence. "The question is; why you? Why did you stumble into this? And why did the creature’s pod react when you touched it?"
