CHAPTER 247: CHAPTER 247: MEETING THE DOMINION SQUAD

"We should probably approach those two soon. Since they already have doubts about that person, then it will be easier to get them to work with us." Lu Zhen said to his wife who was obviously disturbed by their discovery.

He was also disturbed to find out that they still had traitors even when the city was locked.

Thinking about how Leng Pan had sacrificed her own life to save those people. He still didn’t understand what kind of power humans were looking for to gain from destroying humanity.

"You are right. Since those two still have the heart of a soldier, we can start with them. They may be helpful to Ouyang Jin who is busy looking for evidence to incriminate those conducting the experiments in the military.

However, are there more people involved? We already know who is leading them since Commander Qui is the most likely.

But I still hope we can find out what is really happening with the president. So many people have faith in him, it doesn’t feel right about condemning him without proper investigation." Leng Pan agreed with her husband and she hoped that they could put in place some working mechanisms before the zombie crisis becomes worse.

"Let’s wait until most of the people have left. If we are discovered by the other people in that apartment, it might complicate things." Lu Zhen was very clear about this. So he gave such advice.

"Okay then, how about we go there....no, going at night will be even more conspicuous. We’ll just go after most of the people in the community have left." Leng Pan didn’t know how they could approach the two without raising suspicions but she was optimistic.

The following day, the community was nearly empty. The sounds of dragging luggage, honking car horns, and hurried footsteps had dwindled. Only a few stubborn families remained behind, hoping to delay their departure as long as possible.

Leng Pan and Lu Zhen deliberately waited until the noise had died down.

They left their apartment quietly, their movements natural, not rushed, so as not to attract attention. From the outside, it looked like they were just another couple checking the situation outside or preparing to leave for the safe base.

When they reached the apartment Silk and Vortex were hiding in, Leng Pan gave the door a subtle knock, three short taps, followed by two long. A soldier’s rhythm.

They were aware that the others were also there and they would have to find a way to get rid of them or find another place to talk to Silk and Vortex.

However, they needed to make contact first.

Inside, there was a shuffle of movement, then silence. Clearly, the men were on alert.

"We are not enemies, we just realized that our community has new neighbors and we came to say hi." Leng Pan spoke first before Lu Zhen could because she knew that many people find women less threatening than men.

There was no response. Only after a full minute did the door unlock slightly, the chain still hooked. A sharp pair of eyes peered through the gap.

A man with eagle eyes and wearing a military uniform stood behind the door and scrutinized the two people outside the door.

Lu Zhen looked at the man who was still wearing his military uniform and judged that he must be a devoted soldier at heart. He must be one of those who would choose to protect the country over executing the orders given by Commander Qui.

He judged that he must be either Vortex or Silk, or maybe another one of the five who was still wavering.

"How may I help you?" The man asked with the authority of a soldier in his voice. It wasn’t deliberate, it was just his usual voice.

"The question is, how can we help you?" Lu Zhen asked instead of answering Vortex.

"Who are you?" Vortex suddenly tensed and his tone became guarded, his aura sharp like a drawn blade.

Leng Pan met his eyes without flinching. "The ones you’ve been searching for."

Vortex’s pupils contracted. The chain rattled but didn’t come off. From deeper inside, Silk’s voice sounded, tense: "Let them in, Vortex."

After a moment of hesitation, the chain slid free. The door opened just enough for them to slip inside.

As it turned out, Leng Pan and Lu Zhen had talked about it on their way there and decided to come clean about their identity. They didn’t want these people going out to hurt other people if they failed to find the meteorite.

They could fight and protect themselves now, so they weren’t worried.

The apartment was sparsely furnished only with the basics. It looked like they had occupied one of those unsold apartments. That was why it had not been properly furnished yet.

Silk sat on the couch, his eyes flickering between the couple and the closed curtains. His hand rested near his weapon, though he made no move to draw it.

Leng Pan and Lu Zhen looked at the weapons placed in various places in the room and marveled.

These were indeed weapons only found in sci-fi movies. It was incredible what Commander Qui had been up to.

"You’re either bold or foolish to walk into a lion’s den," Silk said flatly.

He didn’t know what was wrong with these two people. He could tell that they didn’t have any malicious intentions towards them. Moreover, they had walked into the apartment unarmed which showed that they came in peace.

However, in the apocalypse, he had learnt not to underestimate anyone.

Leng Pan smiled faintly. "Perhaps both. But I’d like to think we’re here because we want the same thing. A safe country and to protect the people."

Vortex folded his arms, skeptical. "You heard our conversation then."

Vortex asked but he was almost certain. He didn’t think they had planted spyware anywhere. He was aware that if he could use his superpowers to find someone across the city, then other abilities certainly existed as well.
