CHAPTER 248: CHAPTER 248: RECRUITING ALLIES

Vortex folded his arms, skeptical. "You heard our conversation then."

Vortex asked but he was almost certain. He didn’t think they had planted spyware anywhere. He was aware that if he could use his superpowers to find someone across the city, then other abilities certainly existed as well.

"We did," Lu Zhen admitted it quite calmly as if it was a normal thing.

"And we agree with your doubts. Commander Qui’s obsession with the meteorite isn’t for the good of humanity. If he gains it, it will only accelerate our destruction."

"What do you know about our Commander? You are a man who wouldn’t go anywhere if there is no profit. Yes, I know who you are Mr. Lu.

So, what is happening?" Silk knew who Lu Zhen was the moment he walked into the apartment. He didn’t know who the woman was but seeing as they had walked in holding hands, it wasn’t difficult to guess.

"We know your Commander better than you do, and trust me, you don’t want him getting his hands on the meteorite or anything with the same properties as it." Leng Pan was the one who spoke this time.

Both Vortex and Silk turned to look at her. Seeing how she spoke so confidently and Lu Zhen said nothing, they assumed that she might be right. But they wanted to know what was going on first.

Why did these two people talk about their commander as if he was a beast?

"What do you mean? And by the way, when you talk to us like that do you understand that you are asking us to betray the commander. Do you understand what that means?" Silk asked forcefully with a solemn expression.

Leng Pan leaned forward, her gaze sharp as a blade. "No. I’m asking you to remain loyal, to humanity, not to a traitor who will not hesitate to sell us for a little bit of power."

The room fell silent.

For a moment, Silk’s composure wavered. His sixth sense, which had been gnawing at him relentlessly, now resonated with her words.

Vortex exchanged a glance with him, his lips pressed into a thin line. "If what you say is true, then why should we trust you? For all we know, you could be after the meteorite yourselves."

"Also, what are you saying in the first place? Please clarify first before you expect us to talk further with you." Silk was more thoughtful than Vortex and decided to ask the ugly questions first.

"Well, here’s what we have found out and have tangible evidence to prove it. When the apocalypse started we started investigating something we came across by accident....." Leng Pan went on to explain about the experiments the evolved zombies created and linked everything to Commander Qui.

Of course she wasn’t silly enough to talk about the apocalypse in their past lives, but she inferred many details from it.

By the time she was done talking, the two soldiers were horrified, which was the effect she wanted.

At the end of her speech, Leng Pan didn’t beat around the bush, she was straightforward when she admitted, "Yes, the meteorite is in our possession. But if we wanted power for ourselves, you would all be dead already. Instead, we chose to protect it from falling into the wrong hands."

Her blunt honesty stunned both soldiers. Moreover, they were already shaken by what they had just heard. They had not expected their experiment which gave them their abilities to be a cover for something so sinister.

Thinking of all their brothers who had died in the line of duty while protecting people from zombies or those who turned into zombies themselves, they felt as if they had fallen in hell.

How could the military leaders do something so filthy with the authority given to them by the country? How could they sacrifice soldiers who have volunteered to do something believing it was for the greater good of the country?

Silk’s heart pounded as unease gave way to a fragile thread of trust. He wanted to believe that what the two people said was true. Even though he still had doubts, but since they were so detailed, they must know that the information could be investigated.

He leaned forward, lowering his voice. "Then tell me, what do you plan to do with the meteorite?"

Leng Pan and Lu Zhen exchanged a knowing glance. They didn’t reveal everything, but it seemed that the two soldiers at least believed some of what they said.

Lu Zhen answered without thinking too much: "Use it for humanity’s survival. Not its destruction."

"You can leave your unit and join us in building something that will ensure the survival of humanity. You should not think that the only problem we have is that of supplies and the only enemy, zombies.

From the things we found in that lab, we will face more than just zombies, we will face aliens and don’t forget those things your Commander is still creating in some lab as we speak.

He wants the meteorite to make those things stronger to contend with humans.

Think about it and find us in the building you have been observing." Leng Pan didn’t say more. She felt that they would make the right decision.

That answer struck deep into their beliefs. Silk sat back, exhaling slowly. This was the first time in weeks where he felt the suffocating weight pressing against his chest lighten.

Vortex was the same, though still a little guarded. They remained silent as they watched the couple leave the same way they had come.

It wasn’t until Lu Zhen and Leng Pan had left for some time that they finally spoke.

"Do you believe everything they said?" Vortex was the first to break the silence.

Silk was quiet for a while before taking a deep breath. "I don’t think people of their caliber have any reason to waste their time coming here to lie to us.

Also, we didn’t even know where the meteorite was and if they wanted, they could have led us away from them and had us chasing our tails. But they came clean so straightforwardly.

I doubt they would lie about anything they said."
