Rune Matrix: Programming Magic After Transmigration
Chapter 48: Test - Complete
CHAPTER 48: TEST - COMPLETE
The necromancer never expected the second attack to come so soon.
The magic tool the mage used was truly great, he complained, and jumped onto his feet.
In desperation, he cursed the attacker before using a big chunk of his mana to coalesce a defensive shield around the front of the formation.
However, he failed to notice the slight change in the mana bolt that arrived this time.
As soon as the shield materialised, the mana bolt slammed on and exploded. The explosion sent a shockwave into the shield, breaking the outer layer. At the same time, the piercing light and lightning element turned into pure energy, burrowing into the mana shield.
The shield wasn’t constructed to block the rampaging energy or the explosion. It was hastily built to block light and lightning elements.
So, what remained of the mana bolt ricocheted between the shield the necromancer created and the shield fog formation originally had, eating away at its durability.
Meanwhile, the electromagnetic pulse it released gathered the lightning clouds above it. For obvious reasons, the electricity in the sky began to coalesce into a frightening monstrosity, drawn by the electricity below.
While the lightning took shape above the fog formation, the light element within drilled holes through the shield. It glowed brighter and brighter as time went by, illuminating the entire fog formation. The runic symbols that once fluttered around the shield began to disintegrate while the light corroded it from within.
The necromancer had created the shield to block the mana bolt. However, the explosion at the beginning threw him off, causing the entire shield to descend into chaos.
Before he knew it, his control over the shield decreased. The next second, the fog formation’s shield was shredded by the rampaging elemental energy trapped between both shields.
The next thing he saw was a horrifying dragon-like shape made entirely of plasma climbing out of the firmament, drilling its way into the fog formation.
*Spat*
He coughed up blood as the recoil from the spell break struck him. His entire body convulsed in pain as the mana in his body spun around without control.
The pain and nausea made him stumble and fall to the ground pathetically.
"AHH."
He groaned.
The pain was unbearable.
He felt like he was dying.
But even worse was what he saw.
In the far distance, he could see the lightning relentlessly strike the fog formation. The shield, which should have blocked a normal lightning strike, was thoroughly destroyed by the lightning attracted by the mana bolt.
And the formations inside were being destroyed by the light element, releasing a blinding light outwards.
The giant stele that acted as the control node of the formation shattered a moment later, reminding the necromancer that the fog formation was entirely gone.
Looking blankly at the destruction, the necromancer sat on the ground. His chest heaved up and down as rage, panic, and desperation clouded his mind.
His thirty years of relentless work were crumbling before him. And he could do nothing to stop it.
For the first time in an eternity, he felt the pain of losing.
"Heed my call. Search and destroy the person who intruded onto the island." He ordered.
His eyes turned pitch black as he connected his spirit with the undead minions of his.
Immediately, the hundreds of undead on the sea floor turned their heads around and gazed up at the sky.
They heard their master’s order.
Except for the larger ones, which were busy sucking the life essence out of the pile of animal carcasses, the rest walked towards the islands near them.
They were climbing out of the water in search of the mage who messed with their master’s plan.
—
Zephyr sat on the edge of the cliff watching everything that happened. He was pleasantly surprised when he saw lightning bolts as thick as trees fall continuously over the fog formation.
Grinning widely, he watched the fog formation come undone.
"That was easier than expected."
"I thought it would take two or three more tries." He mumbled in great satisfaction.
The result of his railgun test was more than pleasant. Thinking of using it against the necromancer, he felt rejuvenated.
The son of a bitch had done everything he could to toy with him. So, Zephyr wanted to pay it back in full.
He didn’t believe in bullcrap like revenge should be served cold and all. He preferred retaliating immediately.
"Let’s see if you can smile again when you see me." Zephyr rolled back and stood up.
Climbing back onto his feet was a little difficult because of losing one arm, especially when he had to climb out of the cliff edge. Still, giggling slightly, he stood up.
Despite not knowing the extent of his actions or how much he screwed up the plan of the necromancer by testing his railgun, he smiled for a while. Then he gazed at the fog formation, or what remained one last time before leaving.
He could see the whirlpool and the large black stone structure rising from the sea between the islands.
That was the temple Gale’s memory showed him. It was housing the godspawn.
From what he knew, there were hundreds of undead near it, feeding life essence into its core.
Now that he attacked the fog formation, the necromancer would surely send someone or something to kill him. Zephyr knew he had to leave as soon as possible.
So, without any further delay, he walked down the hill.
His next destination was the island on the north side, just next to the one the necromancer was on.
—
A few minutes later, Zephyr stealthily walked north. During his travel, he noticed the fog thinning rapidly. Without the fog formation in effect, the sea breeze was moving the fog towards the east, to the mainland.
Within a few minutes, the fog will disappear altogether.
For Zephyr, that was a good thing. Fighting a bunch of undead while being half blind was not really a great option. With the fog gone, his chances of survival increased drastically.
"I think it’s time to kill and loot some undeads." He said to himself.
