Running A Cemetery in North America
Chapter 55: Things Are Getting Awkward
CHAPTER 55: CHAPTER 55: THINGS ARE GETTING AWKWARD
Behind the wardrobe is a room with very dated décor, featuring white walls, a green lampshade with a pull-chain light, dark brown wooden floors, and a bookshelf filled with various files. No matter how you look at it, this resembles an office.
On the tabletop against the wall is an old rotary dial telephone. The ringing sound Sun Yan heard earlier came from this phone.
Despite the passage of time, the phone still rings tirelessly, as if the caller is in great urgency.
An enigmatic office, a mysterious late-night call, the atmosphere is quite eerie.
Sun Yan walked over and picked up the phone, feigning a casual tone as he asked, "Hello?"
"Father Stephen! Thank God, it’s so good you finally picked up. Father, it’s Curry here. I really need your help now; that strange incident you helped with last time is happening again."
A voice filled with urgency came from the other end, the caller’s tone incredibly tense and tinged with fear.
Sun Yan’s expression immediately relaxed, his guard down.
It seems like this person might have been one of the clients his grandfather helped with an exorcism before his passing, and this old telephone was a means his grandfather used to keep in touch with clients—otherwise, it wouldn’t be housed in this secretive room.
"I’m sorry, Mr. Stephenson passed away not long ago. If you require assistance with exorcism, I can take on that role," Sun Yan said, holding the phone.
"Pas-passed away?"
The person on the other end clearly struggled to accept the news. Making a special nighttime call seeking help demonstrates just how much he trusted Stephenson.
Learning now that the exorcist he trusted is gone, it was a devastating blow for this troubled ordinary person.
"Don’t worry, I’m Stephenson’s grandson. If you’re in trouble, you can entrust it to me."
"Really? Oh God, that’s wonderful. How should I address you, sir?"
"Just call me Jack Sun."
Although Sun Yan had never seen him before, knowing that he was the successor of Stephenson, the caller named Curry showed unwavering trust in Sun Yan and quickly revealed all the troubles he encountered.
"Mr. Jack, your grandfather came to Yellow Rock Town two months ago to perform an exorcism for my daughter. However, the situation wasn’t ideal at the time, as my daughter had been plagued by the demon for too long, and despite your grandfather’s skills, he couldn’t save my daughter’s life. But to prevent the demon’s curse from spreading to others in the family, your grandfather took my daughter’s body away, saying that as long as it was buried in his graveyard, our family would no longer encounter such strange events."
Sun Yan had never heard of Yellow Rock Town, but that was quite normal. There are so many states in America; he could hardly recognize all the cities, let alone the towns and villages beneath them.
Just like Gospel Town, it’s a place that can’t be found on the map, known to residents of Saint Anna City, but completely unheard of by outsiders.
Listening to the account, Sun Yan suddenly focused on a piece of information revealed by this person.
"Mr. Curry, may I ask your daughter’s name?"
"Belia Elizabeth."
Sun Yan suddenly fell silent as the situation grew increasingly awkward.
However, Curry on the other end of the phone didn’t notice Sun Yan’s unusual reaction and continued, "After Mr. Stephen came to my home for an exorcism, I thought this matter was over, but unexpectedly, it seems to be more complex. Recently, the strange events previously affecting my eldest daughter have reappeared at my home. My wife and I are quite worried; we only have one child left, and she mustn’t encounter any more incidents. Mr. Jack, could you come to Yellow Rock Town and help us again?"
"Of course, there’s no problem. Exorcism is my job. As long as anyone has a need for exorcism, I’ll provide maximum help. However, Mr. Curry, I usually work by being paid first—about the exorcism fee, I’d like to discuss it with you beforehand."
Sun Yan agreed with no hesitation, thinking it would be foolish not to earn the money. He had already decided to enter the exorcism profession, and with business coming his way, there was certainly no reason to refuse.
"Certainly, how about 2000 US dollars?" Curry asked.
"We’ll discuss the fee further after I arrive in Yellow Rock Town and assess the situation at your home. The charge will depend on the difficulty of the exorcism."
"Alright, Mr. Jack, I’ll give you my address first. This matter is urgent; I really hope you can come quickly. Thanks again."
After leaving his address, Curry hung up the phone, although they hadn’t met in person, Curry had given Sun Yan a rather polite first impression.
"If their family conditions aren’t great, I’ll charge them a bit less then," Sun Yan said, hanging up the phone and speaking to himself.
He adjusted his exorcism fees according to the individual. If the employer was an ordinary person, he would lower his fees; if it was a wealthy individual, he would certainly extract a good deal.
After all, earning money from the rich is far easier than from the poor. Even buying a belt from a luxury store costs tens of thousands, and they won’t feel bad about being charged extra.
Putting down the phone, Sun Yan then carefully examined this hidden room. He had lived in the graveyard during his childhood, later moving from Gospel Town to Saint Anna City when it was time for school.
During school holidays, Sun Yan would return to the countryside annually, yet he had never known that his grandfather’s room concealed such a place.
This room was the final unexplored part of the main house.
As Sun Yan explored further, he quickly discovered the room’s special features.
The floor in the corner was a trapdoor that could be lifted, revealing a spiral stone staircase beneath, its destination unknown.
Sun Yan was greatly surprised, immediately grabbing a kitchen knife and utilizing his phone’s flashlight function, headed down the stone steps.
Soon, a dark and spacious basement appeared in front of Sun Yan’s eyes, filled with various machines of different shapes.
Some resembled steam engines from the human industrial era, others looked like modified looms, and even in the corner stood a forge platform for iron working.
Other machines included alchemical styles, blending glass bottles, instrument panels, and smelting furnaces. Sun Yan couldn’t discern their specific purposes.
"My God, how many more secrets does this graveyard hold that I don’t know about?" Sun Yan thought in amazement, hurriedly taking out a notebook to examine.
