When James opened the car door for Lily, he didn’t go to the driver’s seat–he sat beside her in the back and pulled her hard into his arms, kissing her fiercely.

The thought of what might have happened that morning–if she had drunk that bowl and miscarried, or worse–filled him with terror. Even with her beside him he couldn’t calm down. In the hospital ward he’d kept his distance out of respect for the elders; now, alone in the silent parking garage, he wanted to worry her into quiet. John, who had business at the hospital, stepped out of the elevator and saw James’s car. He saw James sitting with Lily in the backseat and his color drained.

He ran over and pounded on the car window. “James, you-”

James’s kisses were always so hungry. He’d improved shockingly fast. Though the intensity thrilled her, it was almost too much.

He wasn’t listening to reason–if anything, he gripped the back of her head and deepened the kiss. His panic–fueled possessiveness made him unable to stop: he kissed her like a man set ame, burning her with the only thing that soothed him.
