Seven Sins System Chapter 450. Mr. Broke

But their faces still looked tense. They moved their chairs even closer, and I leaned back a bit, feeling the pressure of their scrutiny.

"Are they going to make you handle another team?" Barry guessed again, his worried tone making his concern clear.

Ion nodded repeatedly in agreement.

I grimaced. “It’s not like that,” I said, the cringe still evident on my face.

They let out a collective exhale and leaned back in their chairs, relaxing their postures.

"Then we don't need to worry," Barry said casually, the tension easing from his voice.

"Yeah, I thought we would receive bad news or something," added Ion, his fox ears twitching with relief.

“This dream team has just shown some nice progress. Who knows, someone might try to sabotage us," Darren said, his voice tinged with a hint of paranoia.

I grimaced again. "Dream team?" I repeated, shaking my head. “You guys are still far from that,” I stated, but my words didn't dampen their spirits.

"But one day, we will be the dream team," Barry announced with a broad smile, his confidence unwavering.

"Yup! You will make us a dream team!" Ion echoed enthusiastically.

I couldn’t help but chuckle at their optimism. “What if I move out before that?” I chirped, teasing them lightly.

Barry's face fell for a moment before he broke into a grin. “Nah, you’re stuck with us, Doc. No one else would put up with our nonsense.”

“True,” Ion agreed, his eyes twinkling. “Besides, we’re the best team you’ve got, right?”

‘Nonsense, huh?’ I thought. ‘I guess they really need a devil mentor to handle that,’ I scoffed internally.

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on my desk, and looked at them seriously.

“You guys have potential, but potential isn’t enough. You need discipline, dedication, and a lot more practice,” I instructed as if I was a normal dedicated mentor.

Darren nodded thoughtfully. “We know, Doc. And we’re working on it. But having you here helps. You push us to be better.”

“You mean you need someone to push you around,” I said, arching an eyebrow. “Your last mentor must have been too soft to handle you guys, huh?”

Ion’s ears twitched, a hint of amusement in his eyes. “Well, he was a good guy and a dedicated mentor though.”

Barry added with a smirk, “And he often bought us lunch. Unlike you, Mr. Broke.”

The trio burst into laughter due to the joke.

I responded with a flat, cold stare, one that I had perfected over the years. It was a look that usually made them shiver, and today was no exception.

The laughter died down quickly, their jokes stopping mid-chuckle as they pressed their lips together, looking chastised.

“Sorry, we were just joking,” Barry said quickly, his usual bravado giving way to a more subdued tone.

I maintained my stare for a moment longer before letting out a small sigh. “I know you’re joking, but there’s a time and place for everything. This is still an infirmary.”

Ion nodded, his expression serious. “We understand, Doc. We’ll tone it down.”

“Good,” I replied, leaning back in my chair. “Now, if you’re done with the comedy routine, let’s get back to business.”

Darren leaned forward, a glint of curiosity in his eyes. “What business?” he asked, his tone half-serious.

I sighed. “So you guys don’t have any other reason to be here besides teasing me, huh?” I asked, fixing them with another flat stare.

Ion shrugged, a mischievous smile playing on his lips. “Well, what do you expect from us?”

I took a deep breath and nodded, conceding his point. “You’re right. I shouldn’t expect anything more from you guys.”

Barry stood up from his seat. “Since we don’t get any nice gossip here and there’s nothing we can do, we’ll excuse ourselves then,” he announced, stretching his arms as if he had just finished a grueling task.

Darren and Ion followed suit, getting up from their chairs with exaggerated movements. Darren gave me a mock salute. “We’ll be around if you need us, Doc.”

Ion nodded. “Yeah, just holler if you need us to liven up the place.”

I couldn’t help but chuckle at their antics, despite my best efforts to remain stern. “Sure, I’ll keep that in mind. Now go, before you scare away any actual patients.”

As they headed for the door, Barry paused and turned back to me, his expression more serious. “By the way, Doc, if you ever need to talk or if something’s bothering you, we’re here. We might joke around a lot, but we’ve got your back.”

“Thanks. I appreciate that,” I said, my voice softer.

He nodded, satisfied with my response, and finally left the infirmary with Darren and Ion in tow. The door closed behind them, and the room fell into a peaceful silence once more.

I leaned back in my chair. “Got my back, huh?” I muttered to myself.

I wasn’t sure whether to be happy or sad to hear this. On one hand, I knew it was their way of showing support, their good intentions clear. But as a powerful devil, their words felt like a mockery to me.

How could they, mere mortals, ever have my back in any significant way?

Yet, I reminded myself that they didn’t know my true identity. To them, I was just Dr. Allen, their mentor and friend. It was better this way, safer for them, and simpler for me. Their ignorance protected them from the complexities and dangers of my true nature. Also, they were potential threats to my mission. Their mouths to be precise.

I sighed, running a hand through my hair. “Ugh… I should have asked them to call Claire, Evie, and Julia here,” I muttered.
