Seven Sins System Chapter 451. Bad Mood

The rest of the day dragged on, uneventful and monotonous as usual. Sure, it was less boring than spending days in the cult’s prison, where I had nothing but the cold stone, Puriel and my thoughts for company.

Here, I at least had the infirmary table to sleep on, though the wood wasn’t much more comfortable. Red’s visit to my team’s antics had been the highlights of an otherwise dull day.

Lying on the table, I stared at the ceiling. The thought of telling my father about the attack weighed on me.

I knew I should inform him about the demons that had spawned out of nowhere on the playground and explain why I needed to extend my stay in the mortal realm. But the prospect of that conversation was unappealing. I wasn’t in the mood to deal with his inevitable questions and disappointment.

Instead, I pulled out my phone, checking social media for any updates about the cult I had destroyed yesterday.

I needed to see how much information had leaked, how much the mortals knew. The news hadn’t gone viral yet, which was both a relief and a concern. Maybe it was too soon, or perhaps I wasn’t using the right keywords.

Most of the reports focused on the destruction and the mysterious disappearance of several important people—company heads, and high-ranking government officials.

None of the articles mentioned their other positions as the leaders of a demonic cult, which made sense. That was their secret, one they had guarded fiercely.

I scrolled through various posts, noting that some witnesses and victims were beginning to speak out. Their stories were harrowing, filled with details of rituals and abuses, but there was no telling if the mortal authorities would take them seriously or be able to handle the fallout.

Sighing, I set my phone down and rubbed my temples. The mortals’ obliviousness was both a blessing and a curse.

On one hand, it kept them from panicking.

On the other, it made them vulnerable to manipulation and danger.

I glanced at the clock. The minutes ticked by slowly, each one feeling like an eternity.

My thoughts drifted back to the attack on the playground. Demons spawning out of nowhere again, in the mortal realm. It suggested a breach. It was something that needed to be investigated, and soon. But the thought of dealing with it now, on top of everything else, was exhausting.

“Right…” I muttered to myself, trying to find some solace in the small tasks I had lined up.

At least I had something to do. I didn’t fully understand my own conflicting feelings.

On one hand, I was relieved that I didn’t have to rush out of this realm immediately.

On the other, I longed to return to my realm, to my routine as a devil, where things were predictable in their own chaotic way.

I took a deep breath.

“I’m going to turn into a real mortal in no time,” I whined, mimicking Barry’s dramatic tone.

Later in the afternoon, Julia, Rachel, Evie, and Claire visited me in the infirmary, responding to my text. They came in cautiously, their eyes scanning me with a mixture of suspicion and concern.

They wanted to make sure I was the real deal, not only my double or illusion. I also assured them that I would be extending my stay in this realm.

They seemed relieved. Despite the usual flirtations and innuendos, there was no sexual intercourse in the infirmary. My mind was too occupied.

Yes, Puriel had successfully destroyed my mood, a feat that few could accomplish.

The girls tried to lighten the mood. But their attempts to lighten the mood didn’t work. I appreciated their presence, but it was like trying to patch a leaking boat with paper.

I did my best to keep up appearances, not wanting them to worry. I reasoned that I had a lot on my mind.

The recent attack, the unfinished mission I thought I had completed, and Puriel’s words.

The rest of the day passed in a blur of half-hearted attempts at normalcy.

As the evening drew near, I found myself back on the training ground with my team.

Holographic projectors lined the walls. The lights dimmed, and the hum of machinery filled the air as the projectors powered up.

My double had been training them in my absence. I felt a flicker of pride. They had come a long way under my mentorship, transforming from a ragtag group of misfits into a cohesive fighting unit.

Nearby, Puriel was training her team. Her methods were different from Theo, but effective in their own right. She demanded excellence, pushing her team to their limits. Even Rachel, who was part of my harem and whom Puriel undoubtedly recognized, received the same training as the others. There was no sign of favoritism or disdain, just professional dedication.

I found myself stealing glances at Puriel’s team, or more accurately, at Puriel herself.

I caught her glancing at me as well.

Our eyes met for a fleeting moment before we turned it to our teams again and pretended it was all just a coincidence.
