CHAPTER 40: CHAPTER 40—OAKFIELD VILLAGE

Chapter 40—Oakfield Village

It took a few minutes for Slime#47 to calm down his raging emotions.

He then took a deep breath and asked, "Elder, how do you think we should escape this village?"

"Wait for a moment," Old Slime said, Wob!—bouncing towards the maps’ crate, and pulled them out.

He then checked the maps one by one. Wob!—Young Slime bounced over and peeked in.

’Yeah... I can’t read a damn thing.’ He sighed, feeling the troubles of illiteracy.

Despite more than twenty loops, he didn’t master a single language, as he’d spent all the time training.

"There..." Elder Slime muttered, pulling a map out from them and placing the rest back in the crate.

’Good...This one’s good,’ Slime#47 nodded with a smile, glancing at the map as it was readable despite his illiteracy since it was filled with diagrams and symbols.

The map was divided into multiple sections, giving a full layout of the village.

"It’s Oakfield Village," Old Slime said, pointing to the headline.

"Yeah... this village seems full of oak trees," Young Slime mused, remembering he found many oak plants.

"This is the house we just raided," Elder Slime said, pointing to the symbol of the house; "This reads protector’s house."

’Protector, huh... makes sense why his house sat like a king in the middle of the fields.’ Young Slime mused, glancing at the corpse of the slime farm owner.

"This is farmlands... with cattle, slime farm complexes," Old Slime said, pointing on the map. "This is the bottom section... only with the agriculture work, and the upper section is where the villagers live..."

The extreme bottom section is where Slime#47’s farm is located, with the slime farm dwelling just in front and agricultural lands on the sides.

In the upper section were the houses of villagers. A simple map listing the names of dwelling owners as well.

"It seems the village is enclosed in a barrier," Elder Slime said, pointing to the circle drawn around the village.

After getting a good glance at the map, Old Slime asked, "I think you already have a plan?"

"Yes, I do... But I wanted to hear your opinion," Young Slime replied.

"Okay... we can escape by killing all humans, but if we do that, adventurers would be on our track. But even if we run without killing them, they would contact adventurers themselves..." Old Slime said and paused for a moment.

With a grin, he continued, "We have to make a mess, a big chaos, so that they won’t get energy or money to invite adventurers while leaving them barely alive."

’Adventurers... huh? They might be dangerous. I didn’t think about them,’ Young Slime mused. He’d seen the slime farm owner’s titles—retired adventurer, E-rank adventurer—but never thought adventurers would become his next problem.

In fact slime farm owner had more titles, even the title of Oakfield village’s protector, but he didn’t care to check everything.

He then said, "I planned to burn crops, release all cattle..."

Old Slime’s eyes brightened as he said with a cruel smile, "Good, that’s a perfect plan... But you have to make them lose cattle as well. Even dead cattle will bring money."

"Yeah... money means hiring adventurers and trouble for us," Slime#47 agreed with a nod.

"And they sure have gotten so relaxed," Old Slime mocked them, noticing that no human arrived despite the fight and loud sounds.

’Humans sure are carefree,’ Slime#47 mused, feeling they were stupidly confident in their protector—an E-rank adventurer.

"Good... First, you should check the entire village out, as there might be some fighters." Elder Slime warned.

"Yeah... got no time to waste. I will go check now." Young Slime agreed and Wob!—rushed out to get a glance.

-----

"Should I first check the fields or the dwelling?" he muttered. After a moment, he decided to check humans.

Wob!—Wob!

Following the roads from the slime farm owner’s dwelling, he went to the upper section of Oakfield Village.

’What a nice view,’ he felt the good village smell and greenery of crops on both sides as he dashed through the roads.

"They seem to care about the village, or do they?" he muttered, wondering as he bouncing on the smooth black roads.

He’d expected muddy, dirt-patched roads built randomly like a poor medieval village, but they were delicate and connected all over the area.

’Wait... this is concrete.’ His eyes twitched, ’First arrived Otherworlders. Of course. They can’t leave anything simple for later comers.....like me.’

Boom!

Within a few seconds, he reached the upper section.

A row of medieval-style dwellings appeared in his vision.

Some were two-story, but the majority were one-story buildings.

A small concrete road between each house was built for easy access.

"They sure have a nice layout," he muttered, as the houses were built row-wise with five dwellings in a single row.

"Double presence hide," he activated his skill and Wob!—He bounced up to the roof—Thud!—then leaped from one roof to another—Wob!

’A total of five rows, with five dwellings in each...100-120 people....approx,’ he mused. "Wait... am I wrong?" he patted his body.

As he glanced at a house where more than five kids were playing, he started to peek in every house through the windows.

They had three to five kids in one dwelling. "Yeah... this isn’t modern Earth," he clicked his tongue.

’It was tough for middle-class parents to take care of more than two kids in the previous life... but here, nope, they had as many as they wanted.’

He then checked the biggest dwelling at the extreme upper corner.

"I cannot read," he muttered, glancing at the written words on the house. But he knew it was the dwelling of the village head as it was surrounded by armed men—with armor, swords, and shields who roamed around it. It was also the biggest in the village, a three-story house.

"Appraisal..." He used the skill on the men one by one.

’They’re all weaklings... easy to take down,’ he mused, but once again impressed by the village, all the guards of the village only focused on protecting one dwelling instead of the entire village.

If the village was attacked, ordinary villagers were doomed!

He then peeked into dwellings through different windows, "Two in the living room... three in bedrooms... total nine..."

End of the Chapter.
