CHAPTER 286: HOME SWEET HOME

When dawn broke, soft beams of sunlight spilled over the hills, brushing the camp with warmth. The mist thinned slowly as birds began to call from the trees. One by one, the group stirred awake. The Valerion guards packed their gear with quiet efficiency, the loyalists helped extinguish the remnants of the fire, and the empress stood near the fountain, her face calm but purposeful. Lucas still lay in his makeshift carrier, his breathing even, his complexion better than before. The Ice Belle clung to his cloak as though guarding him from the waking world.

Captain Varran gave a sharp nod once everyone was ready. "We move now," he said, his voice steady and resolute. "Valerion awaits."

The empress turned to the others. "Let us not delay. Every moment we linger gives the usurpers more time to spread their reach."

So they set off, their figures framed against the rising sun, the wind carrying faint traces of dew and earth. The group’s pace was steady but cautious. They moved through open plains, crossed shallow streams, and passed villages. The journey was hard, yet lighter than before...the weight of the abyss had been left behind, and the skies above them were clear once more.

Days blended into one another. Eight of them, long and winding. They slept beneath trees if they were in woods or inns if they managed to get to a village. ate what they could hunt or gather, and pressed on.

At last, on the eighth day, the high walls of Valerion rose before them...majestic stone fortifications bathed in the golden glow of the setting sun. Flags bearing Valerion’s sigil fluttered in the distance, and the sight brought tears to the weary travelers’ eyes.

Nyx, who had walked near the front, stopped for a moment and let out a long breath. A small smile tugged at her lips as she looked at the others. "Home sweet home," she said softly, her voice trembling between relief and disbelief.

Lira let out a sigh and smiled faintly as well. "It feels like a lifetime since we saw these walls."

Behind them, the guards straightened their backs, pride flickering in their eyes. Even the empress, who had kept her composure through every hardship, allowed herself a small, relieved exhale as her gaze lingered on the gates ahead.

The Ice Belle peeked from Lucas’s cloak and made a tiny noise, almost like a chirp, as though she too could sense the peace in the air.

The walls of Valerion loomed higher as they approached, strong and familiar...a promise of safety after endless peril. For the first time in many days, hope did not feel like a fragile illusion. It felt real, solid, and waiting just beyond the gates.

When the group finally reached the towering gates of Valerion, the guards stationed there sprang into motion at once. The creaking sound of heavy chains echoed through the air as the massive steel doors began to open, revealing the familiar stone-paved road that led into the grand capital. The scent of clean air, tinged with the faint aroma of bread and smoke from distant chimneys, washed over them...a stark contrast to the corrupted wilderness they had trudged through for weeks.

Captain Varran stepped forward first, his voice carrying authority. "Open the path! Princess Nyx of Valerion and Xavier Alden returns!"

The guards on duty froze for a heartbeat, eyes wide in disbelief. Then, as recognition dawned, they dropped to one knee instantly, their armor clinking in unison. "Your Highness!" they chorused.

Nyx’s expression softened. She looked travel-worn and weary, her hair slightly tangled, her cloak frayed at the edges, yet her bearing still carried the grace of royalty. "Rise," she said quietly. "We have come a long way, and there are wounded among us. Prepare carriages at once and see that we are taken to the palace. No one must be delayed at the gate."

"Yes, Your Highness!" one of the captains replied before hurrying off with several men.

While they waited, the empress drew her hood a little lower, concealing her veil from sight. Her posture remained regal, but she made no move to announce herself. Nyx had already advised that her identity remain hidden until they reached the safety of the palace...revealing a foreign empress, presumed dead, at the gates could spark unnecessary attention.

Lira stood by her side and whispered, "Forgive the secrecy, Your Majesty. It’s safer this way. Valerion is secure, but word travels fast in open air."

The empress nodded in quiet understanding. "I know, child. A queen who has lost her throne must learn patience before reclaiming it."

Moments later, three carriages rolled forward, drawn by sleek black horses. The Valerion guards quickly helped, while two others gently lifted Lucas...still unconscious but stable...onto a cushioned seat inside the first carriage. The Ice Belle peeked out briefly from his cloak, blinking at the sudden light before hiding again.

Theron supervised the loyalists as they boarded the second carriage, while the empress joined the princesses and her companions in the third. Captain Varran mounted his horse and gave a final look around the gate before signaling the convoy forward.

Nyx leaned back in her seat, exhaling slowly as the city’s familiar skyline passed by. "We’re finally home," she murmured.

The empress looked out the window, her gaze soft but distant. "For some, home is a place we return to. For others," she said quietly, "it is something we must reclaim."

No one replied to that, yet her words lingered in the air as the carriages rolled steadily toward the palace gates.

Word of their arrival had already reached the palace long before the convoy even crossed the inner gates. The news spread like wildfire among the guards and servants, Princess Nyx had returned, alive and safe, after months of silence and fear. The King himself stood before the grand marble steps of the palace, flanked by the Queen, Prince Darius, and Henrietta. The king’s usually composed expression was clouded with impatience and restrained emotion. His hands clasped behind his back, yet his knuckles were white from the force of his grip.

When the first carriage rolled into view, the royal guards at the palace gates snapped to attention. The rumble of wheels slowed, and the horses neighed softly as the convoy came to a halt before the grand entrance.

Nyx was the first to step out, her travel cloak still dusty from the road. The moment her eyes met her father’s, she didn’t even bother to compose herself. She broke into a run, the hem of her cloak fluttering behind her, and threw herself into The King’s arms.

"My daughter..." The king’s voice cracked as he wrapped his arms around her tightly. "You’re safe. You’re truly safe...I feared the worst when the dark abyss boundary separated the lands."

The Queen joined them almost immediately, pulling both of them into a tight embrace. "We were so worried, Nyx," she whispered, her tone trembling between relief and disbelief. "When word from Lechia stopped coming, your father couldn’t rest. I couldn’t sleep."

Nyx closed her eyes and breathed in deeply, letting the warmth of her family sink in after months of cold and danger. "I’m home, Mother... Father."

Behind them, the guards began helping the rest of the group descend. Lira, Seraphine, Selene, Mirielle, and the empress...still concealed beneath her hood...followed quietly, keeping close to the carriage where Lucas still rested.

Prince Darius stood a few paces away, his expression unreadable but his gaze fixed on his sister with unmistakable relief. Beside him, Princess Henrietta smiled softly, but her attention drifted quickly beyond Nyx, scanning the group that stood near the carriages. Her heart began to race when she noticed Captain Varran and the Valerion guards lifting someone carefully down from the first carriage...someone covered in a cloak, motionless but familiar.

Her smile faltered, and her hand instinctively pressed to her chest. She didn’t need to ask. She already knew.

Her eyes searched for Lucas among them, desperately, her lips parting to speak his name...yet no sound came.
