Space Odyssey: Spectre
Chapter 129 - 129: Labyrinth Run
Jace''s hands glided along the mechanical keyboard as he downloaded all of the data he could onto a harddrive. Ever since he hacked into the labyrinth they had been cut off from the other team. But using his access he knew that they were in another room safe from Daedalus'' wrath.
He could have turned off all of the jammers but decided against it. He did not yet want to show his hand. He would have to wait for the perfect time to show what control he had taken over the labyrinth. Unfortunately he did not have complete control of the labyrinth''s systems.
For instance, he could not turn off the cameras he switched off. Which was worrying since Daedalus intentionally had been switching off the ones that were part of the route he and his team had traveled through. He could also not stop him from searching through the cameras which is how Jace knew that Daedalus had already found their location.
Jace was constantly stopping him from interfering in between him downloading data. Whether it was Daedalus trying to switch off the power to this section, trying to overload the systems, or even trying to move the section. There were constant attempts to interfere with them stealing the computer data.
These data banks were a wealth of information. They had everything from experiment data to untested theories. He doubted it was the most important information, but it was the stuff they could easily access at the moment.
"I am done over here!" Charlie called out as she put away a hard drive with all of the data she copied. "Most of what I got seemed like personal information on hundreds of different people. Some of them were just observations, but others had tags to experiments they underwent."
Jace frowned as he started finishing up collecting the information he was aiming for. "I am almost done. How about you, Ulin? Are you close to being finished?" Jace asked as he glanced over at Ulin.
"Yes, I am just about done." Ulin confirmed as she started disconnecting the hard drive with all of the data she had copied. "I got a bunch of location data and records about what was transported and where. Unfortunately it all appears to be heavily encrypted but I was able to copy it."
Jace nodded, "good. We can decrypt it later." He finished what he was doing and walked towards a door. As he moved he began using his access to move around hallways and rooms in order to make a path to another central chamber he wanted to check out. "Let''s get moving and-"
CRASH!
He could hear a crash and the impact of something heavy coming from the engine room they passed through. He could tell the other two did not pick up on it. But with his enhanced senses he could clearly hear it.
"Damn. We have to hurry," Jace told them. He led the way through a door that was barely opened in the room. His pace had quickly increased as he was now in a rush, wanting to avoid combat for the time being.
The others exchanged a look before hurrying after him. The hallway they ran into had panels hanging off of the wall and roof. There were also floor panels missing so they had to hop over the holes or step around them. As they ran the hallway shuddered as Jace tried to move it but was blocked.
Daedalus must have found a way to restrict his control. Fortunately it appeared he was not able to stop the pathway he had already set up. So as he ran to the door and he heard a beeping noise in his helmet in response to him trying to open it he just grunted in annoyance and lowered his elbow and sped up.
There was a crash as he went through the metal door. His head rang for a moment as he rolled into the room. He quickly shook it off and stood up to see Ulin and Charlie had stopped and looked at him to see if he was okay.
"Do not stop! Keep going!" Jace told them in exasperation as he pointed at another door in the room. He stood up and followed them as they started running. Taking a glance at the room they had entered.
It was another room that was under construction or maintenance. It was a room the size of a small hangar. It had chains hanging from the ceiling along with some blinking lights as the room tried to power up. In the middle of the room was a hole where floor panels were supposed to be. Instead there was a metal square patterned outline where the square panels likely would have been installed.
He ran to catch up to his team as they arrived at the door. He opened it for them as Charlie glanced back at him. Jace ran through to the new room a moment later and slid to a stop just as the others did.
"Umm…." Charlie grumbled as she looked out over the room. Or rather the large pit. At the bottom of the pit was a floor deep into the ground. But the only door in the room was on the other side of the pit with no ladder or stairs going up to this door or down from this door. "So what is the plan here?" She asked while glancing back at the room they just entered from.
Jace clicked his tongue in annoyance before he narrowed his eyes as he noticed something. "Its-"
"There are invisible floating platforms." Ulin jumped in quickly interrupting him. Then she literally jumped to one of these platforms. From their perspective it looked like she just jumped on nothing.
"Okay then-"
CRASH!
This time they could all hear the loud noise as something loudly broke in the last room. Jace glanced back as Charlie glanced at him before making the jump and losing her balance as she landed on something that was not completely solid.
In the last room he could not see the creature completely but coming out of the hallway they ran through he could see the head of a mechanical bull sticking out. Its electronic eyes were glowing red and to top it off a burst of steam came out of its robotic nostril.
He turned his attention back to the invisible platform room. Ulin was paving the way and slowly helping Charlie make her way. Jace quickly closed the door he was by and opened the door on the other side of the room.
Then he jumped to where he could barely make out the edge of the first platform that started. Normally he would be able to register and see the platform if it was using some sort of invisibility technology. But as soon as he stood on the platform he understood it was an optical illusion. He also understood why Charlie lost her balance. Sear?h the N??eFire.ηet website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.
When he landed on the platform it swayed slightly and moved under him. He widened his feet to get a better balance as he quickly solved the reason for why the swaying was happening. These platforms were hanging from the ceiling by thin wires. There was probably a wire on each corner of the platform going to the roof of the room.
After the swaying stopped he slowly walked forward and jumped up onto another platform. This time the swaying was rapid and he started walking one step in front of the other as he realized this was almost like a narrow beam he was walking on.
Jace looked up from his position while walking forward to see the other two were almost on the other side. They were only one or two platforms away from the door. The doorway had a single light above it which was the only other light in the room besides the light above the doorway they had entered in from.
He made it to the edge of the beam and almost stepped off of it. But as he was swinging his arms to get his balance again he felt the platform slip under him as his weight caused the back half to raise into the air.
Jace quickly made a short jump and grunted when he landed on another platform. He pulled himself up and froze as he realized the current platform was not just swaying from side to side it was also moving up and down like a balance beam. So he slowly stood up while looking for the path he was going to take to the door.
He could not completely visually make out the platforms but he could make out the wires now that he was on this platform. He looked at the others and saw that they were arriving at the door. Then they glanced back at him again.
"Keep going! I will catch up in a minute." Jace told them as he hopped onto the next platform. This time he jumped to the next platform before the platform stopped swaying. Then onto the next one.
"Jace we have a problem," Ulin spoke over the channel causing Jace to stop his jumps and frown at the doorway they passed through. "There is a large door with a complex locking mechanism on it. Are we supposed to go through this?"
