Space Odyssey: Spectre
Chapter 149 - 149: Slugs
He slowly reached the door from momentum and pulled himself through. Sling-shooting himself forward with the added momentum from pulling himself through the doorway. But as he was moving the power to the station suddenly turned back on. With it came the lights and the gravity as Jace slammed into the ground. Sliding for only a few inches before stopping.
He began pulling himself up but as he was moving he heard something and turned around in time to see the four legged slug creature come bounding towards him. As it ran through the hangar more of the slugs attached itself to the main body and it became bigger.
"Fucking bullshit!" Jace cursed as he scrambled to his feet and ran to the destroyed elevator. The elevator doors were still wide open, broken by the creature earlier. He could hear a thud of something impacting a wall and glanced back to see the creature had grown to twice the size it was earlier. But with the growth came a new weight which it failed to account for, causing it to slam into a wall.
Without a moment''s hesitation he turned and jumped down the elevator shaft. It would be a painful landing but it would be worth it to escape more quickly. He heard another thud and spun around midair. The creature was slithering down the elevator shaft, abandoning its unnatural four-legged form.
He aimed his rifle and began firing. Splatters of blood began littering the walls of the elevator shaft. As he fell he felt the gravity around him change again. Slowly he went from falling to sliding down the elevator shaft on his feet.
He kept firing and as he slowed down but now he was having to watch his stance. Making certain to use them for positioning as he was sliding and firing his gun. He slid for a few minutes before he fell through another doorway in the elevator shaft. It completely caught him off guard as he fell. He crashed into the hallway and glanced back at the doorway trying to figure out what happened. It seemed the elevator shaft doorway had broken apart when the elevator fell earlier. Completely blocking the elevator shaft with the destruction, preventing him from going down further.
He looked around the hall and frowned. This was not the floor where the large hangar he came in from was located. Using his ability to ready the schematic he realized he was only halfway down the spire. "Take the ship and get out of the hangar." He quickly transmitted as he started running to one of the hangars on this floor he could see with the schematic. It was a smaller hangar but it would still be able to fit the Osprey.
"What? What about you?" Charlie asked in a panicked voice.
"Nina can fly for a bit. You just need to get out of the station and up to the hangar I am located at. I will try to find a way to signal you." Jace assured them as he turned around for a moment and emptied another magazine into the swarm of slugs. It was sliding out of the door leaving a trail of goo.
It was no longer even trying to be another creature now. It was just a swarm of slugs that were falling over themselves to get to him. He ran through the hall and arrived at another door. He kicked the door as he ran through it. Continuing his temporary vigilance against doors.
It went flying through the air and flew out of the atmospheric barrier. Floating and then pulled toward the left out of his view while in space. He ran out into the hangar and turned around in time to see the massive combination of slugs flooding into the room.
"Now, how to signal them." Jace asked himself as he reloaded his rifle. Stashing the empty magazine back in one of his armor''s pockets used for storing it originally. After reloading his rifle he slowly backed up and began firing at the slugs. Aiming at the bottom part of the creature. His shots killed some of the slugs. The slug began taking shape as it fully moved into the room. Leaving a trail of blood and slug bodies in the direction it came from. The form it took was of a giant blob with two arms. The blob swung one of its arms.
Jace fired his rifle along the slug blob''s arm as he jumped back. He weakened it as he killed several of the slugs and it fell apart under its own weight that was not properly structured for. As it collapsed to the ground the slugs that were part of the arm retreated back to the body and the arm rebuilt itself.
Jace aimed and fired again. But this time instead of bullets there was just a repetitive clicking noise. He went to replace his magazine and realized that he was out of bullets. So he quickly placed the rifle on his back as the blob of slugs began to swing its arm at him again.
Jace ducked and rolled out of the way. He did not have nearly enough bullets to take on all these slugs with just his pistol. Fortunately instead of swarming him it was fighting like a hive-mind sentient creature. If it was fighting like an actual swarm he would be in trouble.
"We are out of the hangar Jace, where are we going?" Nina''s robotic voice came through the communication channel interrupting his thoughts.
Jace dashed to the side, jumping over one of its arms as it swept the floor. "Go toward the central part of the spire. I am near there. As for my signal…" Jace landed on his feet and held out his hand. He could feel the tattoo on his shoulder heat up for a moment as a gladius materialized in his hand. "Look for the lightning."
The slug went to swing down at him again. But this time Jace met the swinging arm with a swing of his gladius. As his sword made contact with the slugs, electricity began running along them. He cut off the arm and the arm went flopping to the ground. Most of the slugs at the front of the arm began slinking back to the central mass.
But the ones near the impact point of his sword curled up. His electricity has probably overloaded their nervous systems and killed them. At least that was the plan. In the armor he is currently wearing he cannot completely generate the maximum amount of electricity he has in his body. It would overload and probably damage his armor.
So instead he was using the elemental sword as a conduit for his powers. The elemental sword is what Director Fenrir nicknamed the sword that he can materialize out of thin air. He had plenty of time to experiment and expand on his powers during that last month of training.
The slug retreated slightly before its arms split into more parts and its central body began thinning as it put more slugs in the arms it would be using. It began swinging wildly at Jace. Whipping through the air like a bunch of tentacles.
Jace ran forward jumping over the tentacles and got closer to the central body. He positioned himself so the blob of slugs was between him and the atmospheric barrier. The slug swung at him again. Instead of dodging the arm he cut through it.
Then he began running forward swinging down at the ground cutting any slug he saw in half. As he closed in on the body the slug brought its main body backwards and brought its tentacles back to its body. It tried to defend itself but Jace was close enough now. So he swung his sword in a downward arc down from the ceiling.
Electricity materialized in the air in a line of lightning. It began burning through the ceiling leaving scorch marks. Then it cut down through the slug and out the atmospheric barrier. Like a bolt of lightning it shot out into space.
"KAAAARRRAAAAAAKKKKAAAA!" There was a loud scream as the remaining slugs began exploding after turning black. Causing a chain reaction as blood and slug viscera began covering the entire hangar.
Jace sighed and relaxed his stance. The elemental sword began dematerializing. He looked out the atmospheric barrier. Still lingering in space was the lightning he shot out. A moment later the Osprey appeared.
It spun around and backed into the hangar. It could not completely fit but it could get its rear end inside. So then it was able to lower its ramp without venting air into space. Jace walked up and closed the ramp before it even fully opened. He tossed his empty rifle to Ulin and walked to the pilots cabin.
Nina jumped out of the seat as he walked up. He jumped in and did not even strap himself in as he began flying toward the edge of the system. The area around the station was much clearer now. Which was not a good thing as he began flying away from the station. He tapped a few buttons and both on the monitor in the back part of the ship and on the monitor in front of him appeared the station they had just left.
It was just in time to see the station pulled apart and crash into another station. Jace turned up the power on the engines. He could feel the gravitational pull on him increase as he was pulled back into his seat.
"Are you all strapped in back there?" Jace asked as he put in the most power he could as flew. Fortunately they had enough power because of the modifications. But there was no telling what kind of chain reaction was about to be triggered because of the station''s destruction.
