Space Odyssey: Spectre
Chapter 86 - 86: Suneaters
Jace was transferred to the medical ward within minutes of them landing on the massive space station that was in orbit around the planet he just spent a week surviving on. As soon as it had landed there was a medical team that had several gurneys prepared. He was placed on one and pushed off along with the other two that had encountered the mantis-lizards.
Before he was taken away he along with the others were handed data pad''s with forms to fill out. Jace was already halfway done when he arrived at the medical station. He was quickly moved into a medical bed where they began doing scans.
"Sergeant Steel, you have sustained multiple scratches that healed. The nerves in your hands are damaged from some form of hypothermia. The poison in your body will have to finish running its course over the next few days, but we will give you something to lessen its effects. As for the scratch caused by the creature you encountered…" One of the doctors spoke while the others worked on him. "We have been given the official file and all we have on these Suneaters but all we have indicates that the wound will scar no matter what we do."
"Suneaters? Am I allowed access to the file?" Jace asked as he was almost finished with this datapad. The data pads they were handed had questions about how he survived and what he did for certain things and the reasons he did them.
The doctor smirked as he waved a data pad and placed it on a bedside table. "For later, it has all the data on Suneaters. We will hold you for a few hours for observation then you have an appointment then I do not know after that." The doctor told him then looked at the tiger that was resting its head near Jace''s feet. "Usually we do not allow pets, but we were asked by a Solisa to do a full barrage of scans and data retrieval that are not invasive."
"Okay," Jace nodded before he looked at the tiger tilting its head. "I doubt they would mind. But just keep them near just in case. Or just feed her cooked meat as a treat." Jace''s response earned a chuckle from a nearby nurse.
"So basically just treat it like a big cat?" The nurse asked.
"Exactly," Jace responded. Then he finished the post survival training assignment and opened the data pad on Suneaters.
Suneaters had only been encountered one other time in the records. The Grand Hexarian records to be exact. Towards the end of the empire a military research station that was located near a star encountered the Suneater. It was located in the Yuri System.
The Yuri System is famous for two things. Being the perfect home of the human subrace of Vampires. As well as its black, artificial sun that was created to replace the sun that collapsed.
According to the report the Suneater was found in the airlock. When a maintenance worker stepped out to repair an external part of the station the Suneater began wandering inside the station. It encountered and attacked three different people before someone killed it.
The first one was a skinny male researcher. He was scratched on the leg, barely causing any damage with the attack but still managing to break the skin. Just like Jace there were blue lines blossoming out of the scratch. Soon after observation began the researcher suffered a major seizure and died. However the researcher had no record of having seizures, so it was determined to be an effect of the Suneater''s poison.
The second one was a young female maintenance worker. She had suffered a scratch across the face. It cost her an eye and the blood loss nearly killed her. But the wound healed quickly and she woke up stronger after the injury. Although there was a scar that no treatment could get rid of and all ocular replacement attempts did not work. It did not matter whether it was a glass eyeball or a hightech cybernetic replacement. All of them eventually failed. As for the poison she suffered from the effects for about a month before it disappeared. S~ea??h the N?velFire.nёt website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.
The last one was the guard who killed it. In addition to a scratch on his throat he was also covered in its blood. So he had the odd form of hypothermia in the body parts that had contact with the blood. There was also a scar that could not be healed by nanobots. He recovered within a few days of being exposed to the poison.
All results of testing showed that a stronger physical body could heal the wounds more quickly and get rid of the poison more quickly. But the compatibility of a user determined how much they gained out of the experience or even if they would survive the experience.
The researcher was a normal human. The maintenance worker had a B-Rank compatibility with the system. While the guard had a D-Rank compatibility but strong physical body.
As for the Suneaters themselves. After encountering the first one they found many more flying around the sun, undamaged by close proximity to heat. All the locations they went to seemed to indicate that the light emitted from the star was dimming.
Soon after the researchers discovered the star was dying before the Suneaters arrived. In fact the Suneaters arrived near the end of the star''s lifespan. Indicating that they arrive when a star is nearing the end of its lifespan to consume the nutrients they might need.
All of it was incredibly interesting to read about but he was pulled from his thoughts by a pair of guards that arrived. He had lost track of time while reading, it was time for whatever meeting he was being summoned to.
Jace pulled himself out of the medical bed and began pulling on the new clothes the doctors had set off to the side. They were just a pair of sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and a pair of cotton underwear. He did not even bother to hide his body as he pulled on the underwear and then tossed aside the hospital gown.
Once he was clothed in the sweats he followed the guards. They were dressed in some form of black infantry armor. They were more heavily armored with physical shields on their backs and electric batons hanging from their belts. There was a single solitary symbol on their armor padded shoulders, a triangle with a white circle in it.
As they walked he saw a bunch more guards dressed in a similar manner. They were mainly around labs and at intersections. But the further he walked the more of them he saw.
But apparently a tiger was even stranger since everyone they passed stared at the tiger. Even a few of the guards did a double take when they saw the large tiger following him around.
As for the tiger, he was moving around sniffing everything. Even sticking its head around corners or poking its nose against things people were carrying. It was still keeping pace but just like at the medical facility it was showing curiosity for everything that everyone was doing.
At the medical facility the tiger kept walking up and watching people work. Eventually the nurses and doctors started showing the tiger what they were doing. It was like the creature had an unending curiosity. A few of the guards actually had to push the tiger away when it was getting too nosey.
They eventually arrived at the end of a heavily guarded corridor. Where two soldiers in the same black armor but with red highlights were standing at attention. Instead of being armed with a shield and baton they had rifles in a design he had never seen before.
The two guards stepped to the side and saluted. The two guards that brought Jace here then stepped in line with them. Joining the first guards in saluting.
After a moment of hesitation Jace walked past them up to the door that slid open for him with an electronic hiss. Inside was a large office. On the back wall was a clear wall that showed the outside of the ship. Space was visible with the multiple planets and the view of a large shipyard where several space ships were being built.
There was an intricately patterned wooden desk with metal holographic projectors built into it. Along one wall was a display case and bookshelf. The display case had a number of things that looked old and weathered. The bookshelf had actual books that were worn and ancient. Along the other wall were two more doors that were unlabeled.
Sitting behind the desk was a woman that looked to be in her thirties at the latest. But there was a good chance her age was slowed down by either treatments or nano machines. Because she gave off an air of authority that a thirty-year old woman could never muster.
She had brown hair with a pair of emerald green eyes. One of which had been replaced with a cybernetic replacement. He could tell because of the lens that stood in place for the pupil. For a moment it twisted as if it was focusing on him.
She was dressed in a similar uniform she had seen the rest of the staff in while he was on this station. But her uniform was black with purple highlights on the uniform. With the same symbol on the shoulder of her uniform. But on her other shoulder was what appeared to be her rank.
"Are you done assessing me Sergeant?"
