Space Odyssey: Spectre
Chapter 89 - 89: Requiem and Other
They were walking towards a building that was partially buried in sand. Only the entrance was visible. The door itself was made of some sort of stone and was carved with two giant figures that were pushing it open.
If he had to guess they were the requiem, they had toothy mouths with a completely smooth head. Its body seemed to have a chitin-like exoskeleton rather than a bone and skin. Its hands and feet both had three appendages on them. Then there was the scarce amount of what appeared to be armor covering their bodies.
"The requiem?" Jace asked, mostly towards the admiral as they walked toward the pair of doors.
Around the doors were stone doorways that had carvings of something too detailed for him to be able to quickly decipher. But between the carvings and the door he could see the requiem words.
"Correct, gold star for Sergeant Steel." Admiral Dakota joked as he walked up to the gate and with a grunt began pushing the doors open. "Like the sand you found on Waterswan, this desert has the same properties. It initially hid this place from our scanners. But we still found it by chance during a fly over of the area." S~ea??h the ηovёlFire .net website on Google to access chapters of novels early and in the highest quality.
"What are the carvings on the doorway?" Salem asked as Director Fenrir stepped forward and started pushing the door open with Dakota.
Jace took a second to look closer at the doorways and noticed that both sides started the same way. But only one side was the Requiem. The other was another race that was humanoid but unseen as its appearance was generic.
On the Requiem''s side they had warriors fighting a large creature. Then the warriors changed to fighting each other. After that the warriors changed to using some type of gun, continuing to fight each other. Then there was an image of a cracked circle. After that the image of two Requiem shaking hands. Then it was an image of arrows going away from the cracked circle to another circle. It kept going like that but after each circle there was an image of them shaking hands with a different race. Some he recognized, some he did not.
"It is the Requiem''s story. I am guessing the words next to the images are the narration of the events." Jace walked closer toward it and then backed up as he looked up at the top. At the top was where it ended when they met with the other side''s story.
The Other''s story started the same way as the Requeim''s. First they fought beasts, then they fought each other and technology advanced until the cracked circle. Then they shook hands and left the cracked circle. But this time when they arrived at a new circle they were attacked. The other was attacked by another race that was only depicted by its monstrous mouth. The other race returned back to the cracked circle. There they created something that looked like an angel. The angel left the cracked circle going to the new circle where it killed the hostile race until they bowed. Then it went to another world and did the same. It kept doing it until it reached the top where it met the Requiem.
"Oh my lords, the Requiem depicted their enemies'' story." Jace wished he could record these etchings to study later. "But… they look a little too like the angels from the Christianity Religion."
"The door is open Sergeant Steel, if you want we can give you time to study this later." Admiral Dakota spoke up, hiding his laughter as he spoke. Clearly he was amused by Jace''s fascination with these images and etchings.
"Gladly, but if I could just take a few pictures it would be much quicker." Jace pointed out as he walked through the doors. On the other side of the doors were a set of stairs that led deeper into the ground. It was pitch black down the stairwell.
"Forget it, we want to keep this place absolutely secret. So that means no digital records. I can get you a journal if you want to make a record and observations about everything you see." Director Fenrir informed him as she pulled out her own flashlight and then two additional flashlights and tossed them to Jace and Salem. She turned down the staircase and switched it on.
For a moment Jace caught sight of images on the wall. He turned on his own borrowed flashlight and turned it to the wall. The images were more detailed but it was the start of the same story he saw on the doorway. He was closer to the right side so he was near where the Other as he decided to call them had their story. He swung his flashlight to the other side blinding Salem for a moment and saw that the Requiem side was starting similarly to the depiction outside. But located just before the warrior Requiem was a triangular slot he had seen a few times before.
Jace walked over to it, "Sorry Salem." Jace chuckled out as he stepped past her and slid his hand into the slot. He focused on sending electricity into the slot. A moment later a dim green light filled the stairway.
Further down the stairway both Director Fenrir and Admiral Dakota looked around in confusion. "Seriously there was a light switch?" Admiral Dakota asked as he turned off his flashlight.
Jace chuckled as he started skipping down the stairs with the tiger happily hopping after him. "Not a light switch, I just recognized that they used something similar in their spaceships. So I powered it, I also think I just confirmed that the Requiem had a natural ability for generating electricity." Jace happily told them as he went past the Admiral and Director.
After a momentary chuckle Salem was quickly following after him. Beaming with pride and amusement at the fact that Jace was back to pulling off ridiculous feats. "Hey, do you think these Requiem people intended for this place to never be found?"
"Actually I think they probably left clues about this place in other locations. But they just skipped to the end by accident. You have to remember that from all we know the Requiem was preparing for the fight of their lives before they were whipped out. Meaning they were likely scholars and all around peaceful people." Jace began explaining with a hint of joy. "So they probably began leaving clues for all of their facilities using methods their enemies could never decipher."
"What do you mean by that? That we have just been getting lucky in uncovering Requiem artifacts?" Admiral Dakota asked in bewilderment. He started quickening his pace as he tried to keep pace with Jace.
"Yes, I doubt we could actually scan anything that was intentionally left behind unless its structure was compromised. On the other hand, this was a race of highly advanced and peaceful people who made sure their violence did not make it to the stars. So it is safe to assume that the clues still exist but are far too complex for any creature to answer." Jace explained with a sigh as he almost wanted to go and find these clues.
"What about an Artificial Intelligence being? I am sure the Rogue Metal Legion has found clues and solved them." Director Fenrir pointed out as she kept up by skipping every other step without slowing her pace.
"Unlikely." Jace chuckled, "the Other race as I have decided to nickname them for the time being created the beings that came to kill the Requiem. There is a high probability that they use artificial beings like AI. So the Requiem would have made the clues impossible for them to figure out."
"This… is actually a lot of useful information. I will have to secretly report this later." Director Fenrir sighed as they were nearing the end of the stairwell.
"Or you could just report this now. I am sure that your husband would be delighted to hear about this." Jace pointed out, causing both the Admiral and Director to falter and almost fall down the rest of the stairs.
"What do you mean?" Admiral Dakota nervously chuckled out.
Jace had reached the bottom of the stairs and looked back up at them. "I mean, you two along with the current Emperor likely stumbled across this place and kept it a secret. But the only way you would know about the marriage would be if someone tried it out. But considering you two are definitely not a couple I can only assume that Director Fenrir and the Emperor tried it out. I am guessing the Emperor threw caution into the wind and initially ordered the Admiral to join him but you refused so Director Fenrir the clearly more loyal of the two of you went along with the emperor''s whim." Jace finished his long winded spiel getting blinking and surprised expressions in return. Then he spun around and walked into the lit up room.
Salem on the other hand looked between the Admiral and Director with a look of surprise. "I know you accounted for my mind reading abilities. But I think you were too overconfident and gave a little too much for Jace to work with." She then spun around following Jace into the room.
Admiral Dakota and Director Fenrir looked at each other, "What just happened?" Director Fenrir was confused, there was nothing about Jace''s ability to be this insightful. Was it just missed?
"I think your- I mean Sergeant Steel has figured out how to read you. I would be careful with his enhanced senses and his existing talent in interrogation that could be more difficult than Salem''s mind reading." Admiral Dakota pointed out before he walked the rest of the way down the staircase. "Oh! Have you informed the Emperor?" He stopped at the bottom and turned to look at her.
Director Fenrir''s gaze lost focus for a moment before returning a moment later. "Done." She answered. "Little shit outplayed me." She mumbled in annoyance as she followed after them.
